Cabbage Soup Diet

The very definition of an ill-advised fad diet.

BACKGROUND

Look up the definition of fad diet and you’ll see a picture illustrating the Cabbage Soup Diet. It should not be followed as a long-term eating plan, as it is dangerously low in calories and could do more harm than good. It is possible to lose 10 pounds in a week when you stick to this uber-low calorie plan.

The Cabbage Soup Diet does offer fast weight loss, but it is completely lacking in nutrition, flavor and variety. You'll consume mostly soups of cabbage, onion, celery, carrots, tomatoes and mushrooms. Nutritionists argue that the pounds shed are more likely attributed to the dramatic and dangerous loss in calories and not the proposed fat-burning power found in the cabbage. This diet deprives your body of essential nutrients and has been correlated to difficulty concentrating, feeling light-headed and weak.

PRO
  • You will lose weight
CON
  • Unhealthy
  • Dangerously caloric intake
  • Primarily losing water weight
  • Will regain lost weight if don't stick to healthy eating and exercise following completion
  • Does not promote exercise; would be too weak to do so
DIET and NUTRITION

The one-week Cabbage Soup Diet relies on this simple plan:

  • Day One All-you-can-eat soup and fruit (no bananas). Consume plenty of water, cranberry juice and unsweetened tea.

  • Day Two Consume all the soup and vegetables you like (no beans, peas or corn). Have a buttered baked potato with dinner. No fruit today.

  • Day Three Eat all the soup, fruits and vegetables you like, nothing else.

  • Day Four Eat your soup, no more than eight bananas and all the skim milk you want.

  • Day Five Have at least one serving of soup today. You can also have 10-20 ounces of skinless chicken or beef and no more than six tomatoes. Drink plenty of water.

  • Day Six Eat plenty of vegetables and your servings of beef. Today is the day you can go a bit overboard with the meat (2 steaks if you like) - just make sure to add salad and vegetables. Stay away from the carbs - no fries, potatoes, etc.

  • Day Seven Have at least one serving of soup. Only eat brown rice, vegetables and unsweetened fruit juice.

EXERCISE

No recommendations are made. Given the severely low calories you'll be consuming, you likely won't have the strength for physical activity.

CONCLUSION

For rapid weight loss as a jump-start to a more healthy eating plan, the Cabbage Soup Diet could possibly be a solution. However, fasting or liquid diets like Cabbage Soup promising dramatic weight loss results in only a week are typically only helping you shed water weight. This weight will creep right back on once you stop the diet and continue with previous poor eating habits. Finishing the Cabbage Soup Diet and beginning a healthy eating and exercise regimen is the best advice anyone following this unhealthy approach can receive. Be sure to speak with your physician before beginning.

Wikipedia

The Cabbage soup diet is a radical weight loss diet designed around heavy consumption of a low-calorie cabbage soup over the time of seven days. It is generally considered a fad diet, in that it is designed for short-term weight-loss and requires no long-term commitment. It has inspired several copy-cats based around similar principles.

Day 2

I did add some protein to the diet everyday, otherwise this really is not a healthy diet to be on for the full seven days, and they weight you lose (like sweet tooth pointed out) will be muscle and water weight, not fat.

I had a small table spoon of peanut butter with my apples and a low cal protein shake w/ water. I also boiled and shredded small amounts of chicken to put in my soup. These are all small amounts but they keep your body from being queued into thinking it is starving and eating away muscle. Also, it allows me to have enough energy to do moderate exercise.

Even with the added protein I am pretty tired. Drink more water today. Am down 3 pounds but i'm positive its all water weight, as I spent all night running to the bathroom to piddle.

Im going to Hawaii in 3 weeks, hopefully I can have my summer bikini body back by then. posted May 20th, 2009 5:04 pm

I got to day six and cracked! I had takeaway for dinner with my partner... naughty naughty, was fried rice and prawn stirfry, so atleast it wasn't McDonalds or something! I did only loose around 2pound/1kg on the diet. So I had one bad day on day 6 and have started back at day one...... posted May 18th, 2009 7:50 pm

Thumbs Up

I finished the diet yesterday on Sunday, and I lost a total of 7 pounds. It's not easy, but it works if you stick to it. I wanted to do it to get back on track with healthy eating, so now I'm going to start back walking as well as eating right to lose more weight. I will go back on it in 2 weeks. The diet actually decreased my appetite. On the day that I could have all the beef I wanted I ended up eating a smaller amount than I thought. The last day was the one I didn't like because I don't care for rice too much, but overall it was a good short term diet. posted May 18th, 2009 8:25 am

Hi Allana, I think you can have up to 2 steaks on day 6.

I'm on day 5 today too... however I am still at my start weight.... I feel like I have punished myself for nothing!
I ate low fat minced beef today and already my stomach feels heavy from the meat... thin I'll substitute it for fish or chicken tomorrow. Looking at what I will be eating in the next two days I feel as though I wont loose any weight at all. DO I just give up? Did anyone else have this problem where they did not loose any weight until the last two days????? posted May 15th, 2009 11:15 pm

Day 4. weight loss 1kg.

This weight loss has taken me back to my start weight after a gain on day one.
My stomach felt flatter this morning and I felt the best i have since I started the diet, not hungry at all. Only had one bananna smoothie for breakfast and soup for the rest of the day. I am starting to wonder if this diet is actually going to work. posted May 15th, 2009 4:07 am

Day 3: Weight lost- None. but none gained either.

Woke up feeling like I have a cold. But other than that feeling pretty good. Not hungry Iike I have been in the last few days. Had fruit salad for breakfast consisting of mandarine, kiwi fruit, green apple and strawberries. Lunch consisted of a salad made from baby spinach, capsicum, carrot, celery, onion and tomato. Have made a fresh batch of soup for dinner. This time used chicken consume, celery, cabbage, onion and carrot. Will blend some up with some cauliflower again. Don't think I could have a tomato based soup again today.
Still thought I would have lost some weight by now as most people have claimed to have lost some.
Still no yukky side effects like gas ect.. wondering if this diet is actually going to work,.. I hope so because it has been damn hard keeping off the sugar and carbs! posted May 14th, 2009 3:57 am

Day 2. Weight lost- none, Weight Gained- 1kg/2.2lbs

Woke up with a sore throat and nausea and really did not want to eat soup for breakfast. Grilled some mushrooms and baby spinach with a touch of garlic and pepper. Went to the gym for 1 hour and was told not to avoid protein from my diet or all the weight I would loose would be water and muscle and the fat would be left. Have opted to having 1-2 protein drinks a day made with water (130 calories per serve) to ensure my body eats the fat not muscle.
Almost felt like I did not even have the energy to walk after visit to the gym. Not side effects of toilet trips or gas yet, hopefully it stays that way!
Changed the soup today, steamed up 1/2 cauliflower added it to some of the soup and blended it. Added some curry powder, topped with chives and fresh cracked pepper, was yummy and did not taste like yesterdays soup. Tonight I will do the same but with Broccoli and will have a side serve of steamed vegetables covered in Lemon juice.
The original soup I made did not have beans, mushrooms or capsicums in it. I also only made 1/2 the quantity and will make a fresh batch tomorrow without tomato..
I am craving carbs and would love some chocolate.. just remind myself that it is tough and I don't want to put to waste the time I have already sacrificed... Hopefully some weight drops off and I don't have another gain tomorrow. posted May 13th, 2009 3:43 am

I am starting on day 1 today and will keep a diary each day to let you know how it is going. I am 5"6 /168cm and 145lbs or 66kg. I have a 5month old baby and have already lost 26kg /58lbs and wanting to drop another 9kg/19.8lbs. I have lost the weight with a healthy eating 5 meal a day plan based on protein and salads/vegies.

Today was not as bad as i thought it would be, the soup is fine and it was all I ate. I drank hot water with fresh lemon and cold water. I didn't feel the need to eat any fruit and just used the soup to fill me up. I have made a basic version of the soup and each day will add something different to keep the variety. I unfortunately was made very busy this afternoon and didnt get to eat for 6 1/2 hours, by then I felt extremely tired and short tempered. Slightly dizzy too, but that was most likely due to not eating enough. I will weigh in each morning and fingers crossed I can stick to this. I did try it many years ago and gave up at about day 5, i remember I lost a bit of weight though.
I just have to beat my night cravings for sugar!
Wish me luck!

How's it going Shy? Hope you're getting on better this time. It's been four weeks since we finished the diet, I've put on two pounds overall and my boyfriend has stayed the same. The bit we're noticing is that now we're exercising more and eating healthily, our bodies are changing shape. So much so that I bought a pair of jeans a size smaller yesterday!! So it's not all about how much weight you loose, listen to your bod and how it's feeling too.

Keep healthy! :o) posted May 1st, 2009 8:17 am
