New Nutrition Guidelines for Americans
It's redundant to remind you that the U.S. doesn't just have a weight problem on its hands, it has an epidemic. Many companies, individuals, and even government entities are working hard to figure out realistic solutions that Americans will actually listen to, learn from, and put in to practice.
The newest revelation is MyPlate, a nutritional icon announced by the USDA and Michelle Obama on June 2 that also replaces the decades-old food pyramid, MyPyramid, described as "too complex to serve as a quick and easy guide." The goal with MyPlate is that this simple and obvious image will help people better understand exactly how to eat better to improve their health, rather than reiterating all the things you're not supposed to do.
The jury is still out, of course, on the long-term benefits of the new MyPlate, but it certainly appears to be a step in the right direction. Simply put, we need far more fruits and vegetables than we're currently consuming, and do we don't need to make the protein the centerpiece of a meal as we tend to do.
