Alli
The FDA's only over-the-counter diet pill.
The anticipation for a new diet pill is over as the FDA recently approved Alli (pronounced Al-eye). It's the weight loss newcomer that is quickly finding its place on drug store shelves. Alli is the first FDA-approved diet pill available without a prescription. Alli is actually a low-dose version of Xenical, a prescription drug that successfully assists obese individuals losing weight. Xenical is taken under a doctor's care while following a low-calorie, low-fat diet. Alli has the same active ingredient (Orlistat), but in a much lower dosage, and is available without the prescription.
Alli can help you lose a few pounds more than just dieting and exercise alone. It works by suppressing the body's ability to absorb fat in the intestines. By reducing fat, you reduce calories. When the body is unable to absorb these fats they become undigested waste.
Alli works best when it is used in conjunction with a low-calorie, low-fat diet and a regular exercise program. But since sticking to a reduced-calorie diet is tough and since certain foods need to be avoided while using the diet pill, Alli has partnered with eDiets, a meal delivery service that delivers Alli-specific meals to your door every week.
While some may view Alli as a controversial solution to weight loss, the manufacturers of this product have gone to great lengths to offer a comprehensive program to its users in order to make weight loss as easy and approachable as possible.
Although studies on the amount of weight loss you can lose with Alli are limited, you can expect to lose three to five pounds more than just relying on diet and exercise alone.
- May help to jump start a weight loss program
- Comprehensive website that offers support, food journals, calorie counters, meal plans and shopping lists
- Partnership with eDiets makes eating and meal planning simple and convenient
- The only over-the-counter diet pill with FDA approval
- Low-dose version of effective prescription diet pill
- Some think it shouldn’t be sold without a prescription
- Not a long-term solution to weight loss
- Uncomfortable side effects
- Must be very careful to not exceed the maximum fat gram requirement with each meal
- Weight loss affects are modest
- Meal delivery services don't teach you how to consume and prepare your own calorie and portion-controlled meals
Alli contains 60 mg of Orlistat.
Alli is a 60 mg tablet taken three times a day with meals that should not exceed 15 mg of fat.
A low-fat and low-calorie diet must be followed while taking Alli. Since the success of Alli depends so largely on what you eat, how much you eat and when you eat, you have two choices for designing the most effective meal plan for your weight loss needs:
- You could consult with your physician or a registered dietitian to design a well-laid out diet and exercise plan.
- You could sign up for Alli's partner eDiets, a meal delivery service that creates special Alli-approved meals and delivers them to your door each week.
With the eDiets plan, you eat three meals a day plus snack and desserts. Menus can be personalized to reflect your tastes and preferences and you also have access to a registered dietitian, an online community of other Alli dieters and fitness and exercise support.
Since the fat content of each meal must be closely monitored while using Alli (no more than 15 mg each day), eDiets special Alli-approved meals meet these requirements so that your risk of side effects is kept to a minimum.
The eDiets menu includes a wide variety of delicious meals, including:
- Maple Apple Oatmeal
- Denver Style Potato Skillet with Turkey Ham
- Rosemary Pork with Brown Rice
- Oven Roasted Turkey with Savory Sweet Potatoes and Mixed Garden Vegetables
- Blackened Chicken served with Seasoned Spicy Brown Rice
- Peach Cobbler
- Sugar-free Pudding
Irrespective of which meal plan you follow, since Alli inhibits the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, it is important to take a daily supplement that includes Vitamins A, D and E.
In addition, for the best results, a regular exercise program should also be followed that includes 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week. If you decide to sign-up with eDiets meal delivery service, you have access to a live fitness trainer to help you customize an exercise plan to compliment your weight loss needs.
Many people have seen positive results with Alli. However, those considering taking Alli should note that side effects can include gas, and uncontrolled urination and bowel movements, especially when not following the guidelines prescribed by Alli.
Alli is not a magic pill to lose weight, but its special partnership with eDiets, a meal delivery service, makes eating and meal planning simple and convenient.
Do keep in mind that the effects of taking Alli in comparison to just dieting and exercising alone are just the difference of a few pounds. It is necessary that you consult with your medical practitioner before taking Alli.

(Page 11 of 15)I have been taking Alli for about three weeks and have lost almost 15 lbs. My goal weight is 165 and I am at 173 now. If you follow a low cal low fat diet you will loose weight. If follow weight watchers program with this pill you will loose major pounds. When you don't stick to Low Cal you WILL have side effects! This will help you to stick to it!
i am considering trying alli. however, sometimes you can't avoid a fatty meal when you need to go out for dinner etc. anyone just skipped a dose of the pill? and continued the next day? would that decrease any possible side effectS?
I have started Alli on 3-8-08 and really havent noticed any harsh treatment affects, but i have noticed i am peeing alot, more, and cant hold it.. so when i gotta go i gotta go.. i dont check the scales i dont believe in those i no if my pants dont fit or my love handles are showing..lol.. either way i hope this works, but again i keep saying it does force you to change ur eating habits and with any diet, surgery, etc.. if you dont change your EATING HABITS" you will gain the weight back, this is gonna force u to eat right.. and then you will train urself to eat that way all the time.. but for now i follow my own diet, i look at the guide for some pointers..though..
I have been on alli for two weeks now, I work out 3 times a week, have reduced my fat intake and I have already lost 10 pounds. It does have side effects in the bowel area but as long as you eat right you will be okay. I am on my way to success and alli is helping.
Today I started to take alli, and I was wondering if I decide to take in 15-20 grams of fat all day instead of 35 grams, does this matter?? Should I take it if I skip ameal?
I STARTED USING ALLI IN DECEMBER OF 2007 AND I HAVE LOST 60 POUNDS. I WAS WHAT WAS CONSIDERED MORBIDLY OBESE, I WAS AT 305 POUNDS AND NOW I AM AT 245. I STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO, BUT THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT HAS WORKED ME. IT TEACHES YOU NOT TO STUFF YOUR BODY WITH FATS!
i have been taking this for two days and lord the side effects are bad! i mean i have been eating subway sandwiches with outh so much mustard on it and u still get bubbly, but i am eating only once a day and i snack on fruit so hopefully this will go well!
i have taken it for only 2 days and yes i've noticed the side effects, you have to cut fat foods ..i noticed if i eat something that has 4g of fat i get the effects but hopefully it works for these 3 months!!
Nanny or anyone else wondering if this product is for you. Don't waste your money on any diet products. Im not saying that they don't work, however the juice is not worth the squeeze. Follow a sensible diet plan, exercise and you will lose weight. The last thing you want is to develop a dependency on these products. I was 310 when I started my diet 6 months ago. I am now 205. Even with the plateau if you use logic you will lose weight. Burn more then you consume...
Hopeless, can you give me an update on your weight loss success? I would like to lose 15 pounds by July or August and am considering Alli. I had thyroid surgery in September and have gained 10 so your updated comments will help
I took it for aout four months and lost about twenty pounds, without being moody, or any heart palpitations, it is a great product. I am planning to have a baby so I stopped, but I plan to be back on it....

Well i have read all these comments and there seem to be more good then bad, i have always been scared of taking pills, i heard they can increse your heart rate and make you shaky. I sure hope Alli dosent do that. Today is 1/28/08, I plan to start on Sunday. I want to lose 35 pounds. I quiet smoking last month and have gained about 20 so i have to lose!!
Has anyone tried the Alli diet pills? I heard they have some crazy side effects and wondered if anyone has suffered from them?
Alli seems kind of expensive to me i guess it is a GSK drug
I have taken xenical, which is the prescription form of Alli. IT works really well but is important to combine it with a low fat diet! If you don’t you might get some unpleasant side effects!
i tryed alli and lost 3 pounds in 3 weeks really bad side effects if u eat to much fat so stay away from fat other than that slight headaches.
I've been taking it 2 weeks and no results yet. I've lowered the fat intake because the side effects are really gross, but still no real loss. I have noticed a slight decrese in my appitite though.
I have been on Alli for about 4 weeks, I have dropped about 3 pounds. They say it may take some time to really lose weight
Is alli just a smaller dose of Xenical?
