The Grapefruit Diet

Fruit diet is a quick fix that may drop pounds, but it's not healthy.

BACKGROUND

For years, the Grapefruit Diet has remained among the most popular of quick-fix fad diets. While the Grapefruit Diet makes for a great magazine article, nutritionists say it does not offer a well-balanced plan that you could follow for any extended length of time because your body requires more nutrients and calories than this calls for.

It's true that people following the Grapefruit Diet drop significant pounds in about 14 days. This is more likely correlated to the significant loss of calories than it is any weight-burning power the grapefruit may hold. The Grapefruit Diet suggests a total daily calorie consumption of around 800 calories, and nutritionists hold a healthy diet would have at least 1,200.

PRO
  • The grapefruit is a good source of beta-carotene
  • Helps reduce cholesterol and promotes heart health
CON
  • Not a long-term solution
  • Not enough variation in nutrients
  • Not enough calories
DIET and NUTRITION

A day on the Grapefruit Diet would look like this:

  • Breakfast with half a grapefruit, two pieces of bacon and two eggs.
  • Lunch with half a grapefruit, as much meat as you like and a salad with your favorite dressing.
  • Dinner would include half a grapefruit, fish or meat, another salad with dressing or substitute buttered red or green vegetables. You can drink coffee or tea.
  • Before bed you could have 8 ounces of skim milk.
EXERCISE

No guidance provided.

CONCLUSION

This is not a diet that could sustain a person for any length of time because of the unhealthy calorie intake. You will lose noticeable weight in a short amount of time, but as soon as you stop following the Grapefruit Diet the pounds will just as quickly return.

I have been on this diet for 3 months, it does make you lose around 50 lbs, but you will gain it back if you eat one bad thing, you will have to stay on this diet for the rest of your life if you want to keep the weight off. my advice is do the HCG drops IT WORKS and you dont gain the weight back!! if i were you I would check that one out you can see what everyone has to say about it on facebook on there page, the liquid HCG. I do not work fo them I just want to help people out who really want to lose their weight!! posted Mar 14th, 2010 5:48 pm

I have tried and I have seen results, I do eat it or drink the juice every day before every meal I try to have a healthy diet as well, but I am not on a diet. I changed every thing in my house to wheat and I am loving it!!! Only good things about it....one thing that bothers me is that every where I read about eating habits, fruit is something that you must have EVERYDAY so isnt's grapefruit a fruit? although I have read that is not good or as beneficial as said to eat grapefruit everyday...I do not agree!!!! IT IS GREAT!!! posted Feb 23rd, 2010 1:46 pm

This is basically a low carb diet if you cut out the grapefruit. Low carb IS the way to go. Its a great way of living. Some of you may be more metabolically resistant than others trying this diet and im sure the natural sugars from the fruit most likely are limiting your success. I strongly suggest atkins, its the same thing without the milk or grapefruit. You'll love it! posted Sep 16th, 2009 4:25 pm

I was 282 lbs. when I started in the second week of feb. Currently I am on my second 12 cycle. So far I have lost 18 pounds.

I also run vigorously 2-5 miles 6 days a week, before I started the diet.

So far it has been working and I am happy with it.

To start was tough. It only took 4 days to get over the caffeine withdraw symptoms-Headaches.

Now I am used to diet and happy with the results.

I lost 40 lbs on this diet over a 2 month period. I was able to keep it off, because I did not go back to my old eating habits when I came off the diet. The diet is meant as a jumpstart, not a way of life. It really is a mind thing. If you stay focused you really can do it I promise. I also saw a post where people added a LOT of sugar. Please don't do that, it defeats the purpose. You will get used to the grapefruit taste. It's acquired. Get creative with your salads so you don't get bored. Oh and when I absolutely had to have something to satisfy my sweet craving, I added a tablesppon of raisins to my saled. Don't knock it until you try it :) Good Luck! posted Nov 11th, 2008 1:14 pm
