Special K Challenge

Are you up for this special challenge?

BACKGROUND

You've probably seen the commercials - excited women dancing around with bowls of Special K cereal. You probably don't get this enthused after your morning breakfast, but does yours help you lose weight?

The Special K Challenge says that if you'll follow their simple dietary guidelines, including two bowls of Special K cereal each day, you can lose up to six pounds in just two weeks.

The Special K Challenge promotes a community effort, by partnering with Yahoo Health. There you can join the Special K Challenge group, to participate in forums and chats with other challengers and access weight loss tips.

You're advised to visit with your doctor before beginning the Special K Challenge.

PRO
  • A simple approach
  • interactive online community at Yahoo Groups
  • Fast approach to weight loss that is relatively healthy
  • High fiber diet
CON
DIET and NUTRITION

The Special K Challenge is much like a meal replacement diet. You'll begin the day with a bowl of Special K cereal for breakfast with skim milk and fruit. Then replace your typical lunch with a bowl of Special K cereal. You'll then enjoy the dinner of your choosing - the healthier the better. Throughout the day you should consume plenty of fruits and vegetables to replace unhealthy snacks.

Special K has a variety of cereals and snacks to help you stay committed to the program. There are six cereals including Red Berries, Vanilla Almond and Chocolatey Delight. There are also many flavors and varieties of snack bars, protein meals, shakes, cereal bites and bars. Plus, the recent addition of Special K2O Protein water in refreshing flavors like Strawberry Kiwi and Lemon Twist. It should be noted that some of these food items, like the protein bars, contain partially hydrogenated oils- which means they are a source of trans fats.

EXERCISE

There is not any guidance provided from Special K regarding exercise.

CONCLUSION

If you're looking for something to jump-start your weight loss, maybe you can try this for a week or two. Maybe it will be a physiological boost for you to continue. Otherwise, the idea of an obviously temporary eating plan seems like a losing proposition. Be sure to read the food labels of all of the Special K items as you'll want to avoid the ones that list partially hydrogentated oil in the ingredients, as this is a source of trans fats.

People, believe me when I say, this diet works. however, like any other diet...you have to stay committed and be disciplined.

I eat one cup of the special k cereal (a choice from vanilla almond, red berry, or cinnamon pecan) with 2/3 of a cup of soy milk (since i dont drink cow's milk straight) for breakfast usually with a banana, or some tea and since I dont have accomodations to keep my milk chilled at work, i usually eat one of the protein bars. Also, throughout the day I drink LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of water.

I exercise about 3O mins a day and burn around 25O to 3OO calories. I dont eat after 6 and I have lost 6lbs by the end of the two weeks.

I did slack off a little during the time and i know i would have lost more but starting tomorrow, im going back on it for another two weeks.

wish me luck ... again . posted Feb 15th, 2009 5:09 pm

A friend went from a size 14 to a size 8 in a little over 2 months. I was impressed and she looks wonderful. I'm starting this diet Monday. I only need to loose about 10 lbs, but need to loose inches around my middle. I'm also going to start exercising. I'll see how this works. posted Feb 5th, 2009 1:12 pm

I started this diet 2 weeks ago and have lost 10 pounds. I am also making sure to keep my caloric intake to 1200 a day. I do allow for extra calories if I have done at least 20 minutes of exercise! Good luck to all! posted Jan 29th, 2009 2:45 pm

I just started it today! I am hungry as well...but I think my stomach will adjust. Those who question if it is a healthy plan...I believe it is for a short term to quick start your weight loss. If you read the contents on the packaging it includes many vitamins that are essential for our body as well as the appropriate amount of nutrition in other areas. ....anyway...if it works I will post again soon! posted Jan 19th, 2009 3:48 pm

Weight: 105 lbs.
Height: 5'5"
Hoping to lose: 10-15 lbs.

I just started this diet yesterday, and all I can say is: I'M STARVING!
Although this is a great diet, and easy too, it's just really hard the first couple of days while your stomach is adjusting to this new eating habit.
However, I will not accept defeat (yet)!
I will admit that I have caved in a few times, but I'm getting better everyday.

Here's an example of what I'm eating:

Breakfast: Bowl of cereal or cereal bar or 2 special k waffles w/o syrup.

Lunch: a meal bar

Snack: cereal bar

Dinner: My choice.

(Throughout the day I'm also nibbling on some veggies and fruit)

And then for my other snack, I just drink protein water throughout the day.
And I have given up on soda which is REALLY hard for me!
And I shall weigh myself once a week.
I sure hope that I can keep this up. :)

I'll repost in a few weeks or so.

Good luck to everyone! :)

Im going to be starting this diet this monday depending on how good it goes i might make it a longer thing. It doesnt seem unhealthy to me at all you just need to add in fruit and veggies throughout the day i have the cereal and the cereal bars and now they have meal replacement bars..so insted of eating cereal twice a day you have cereal in the morning.protein snack bar,Meal Bar for Lunch,Another Snack Bar,And then for dinner your choice of Food.
Hopefully it works but of course with any diet you will get better results excercising also. posted Jan 18th, 2009 11:26 am
