Special K Challenge

BACKGROUND

You've probably seen the commercials - excited women dancing around with bowls of Special K cereal. You probably don't get this enthused after your morning breakfast, but does yours help you lose weight?

The Special K Challenge says that if you'll follow their simple dietary guidelines, including two bowls of Special K cereal each day, you can lose up to six pounds in just two weeks.

The Special K Challenge promotes a community effort, by partnering with Yahoo Health. There you can join the Special K Challenge group, to participate in forums and chats with other challengers and access weight loss tips.

You're advised to visit with your doctor before beginning the Special K Challenge.

PRO

- A simple approach

- interactive online community at Yahoo Groups

- Fast approach to weight loss that is relatively healthy

- High fiber diet

CON

- Lacking in balanced nutrition

- A temporary solution

- Some Special K products contain trans fats

- Provides little guidance for planning dinner meals

FOODS and RECIPES

The Special K Challenge is much like a meal replacement diet. You'll begin the day with a bowl of Special K cereal for breakfast with skim milk and fruit. Then replace your typical lunch with a bowl of Special K cereal. You'll then enjoy the dinner of your choosing - the healthier the better. Throughout the day you should consume plenty of fruits and vegetables to replace unhealthy snacks.

Special K has a variety of cereals and snacks to help you stay committed to the program. There are six cereals including Red Berries, Vanilla Almond and Chocolatey Delight. There are also many flavors and varieties of snack bars, protein meals, shakes, cereal bites and bars. Plus, the recent addition of Special K2O Protein water in refreshing flavors like Strawberry Kiwi and Lemon Twist. It should be noted that some of these food items, like the protein bars, contain partially hydrogenated oils- which means they are a source of trans fats.

EXERCISE

There is not any guidance provided from Special K regarding exercise.

EXPENSE

Cost of the cereal. You can join the Yahoo Groups free of charge

CONCLUSION

If you're looking for something to jumpstart your weight loss, maybe you can try this for a week or two. Maybe it will be a physiological boost for you to continue. Otherwise, the idea of an obviously temporary eating plan seems like a losing proposition. Be sure to read the food labels of all of the Special K items as you'll want to avoid the ones that list "partially hydrogentated oil" in the ingredients, as this is a source of trans fats.

Anonymous:  This is not brain surgery. If you replace two meals per day with a bowl of special K (which is about 100 calories) you are cutting a lot of calories. Might be good to lose that last 5 pounds or to get a jumpstart but how long can you eat two bowls of cereal a day?

Anonymous:  I have been thinking about trying the Special K challenge but I am a bit worried that I will get bored eating it,give up and put any weight back on that i lose, plus more. Has anyone had any problems sticking to it?

Anonymous:  I have been thinking about trying the Special K challenge but I am a bit worried that I will get bored eating it,give up and put any weight back on that i lose, plus more. Has anyone had any problems sticking to it?

Anonymous:  Is it ok to eat 2 bowls a day and also eat the cereal bars too? or do you have to replace the cereal with the bars? not sure i could eat that much Special K though!!!

Anonymous:  This diet seems to be starving me. I've lost 15 pounds in these first two weeks, and have no energy for anything. I don't think I can handle it anymore. Does anyone have advice for me? The monotony in selection and the total lack of nutrition is really, really getting to me.

Anonymous:  You should probably stop; my friend tried the Special K diet and starved. He was in the hospital for a few weeks, and he died.

Anonymous:  I used to weigh 320lbs I worked for years trying to lose weight, but just couldn't but 3 years ago I found the special-K diet now I weigh 73lbs and cannot stop! I love special K sooo much! This is the best diet I have ever been on!

Anonymous:  I started the diet a 3 months ago and began to gain weight (I think because I would eat without moderation for the extra meal as I was so hungry). I then cut out the snacks and substituted the meal of choice for a slice of bread, a vitamin suplement, and a peice of frut and wieght dropped off me like a charm. It just took a while to get used to the small portions. I suggest slowly working down to smaller amounts. This is a great way to get results!

Anonymous:  Ive been on a few diets and this is really the same thing. eat fruit and special k cerial and you drop a size. the first few pounds are easy it its after that when it gets tricky!!

Anonymous:  Um, 73 Pounds is NOT a healthy weight for anyone. I'd suggest you get off this diet and put on some weight. You said "I cannot stop" that seems to me like you have a problem...sorry.

Anonymous:  I started the specia k diet today and i just gave up and ate a rice chrispy treat(: but now that i have some reasurance i will start tomorrow for sure.

Anonymous:  im starting tomorrow for the special k challenge. im willing just to shed about 10-15 lbs. im willing to try it for the new years jump off to a healthier start. my BMI is still within range, but its at the border line. i hope this is a smart diet. i see it lacks nutriets. its nothing that fruits and vegetables cant make up. before the diet i was running 2 miles 5 times a day and just eating veggies, fruits, and white meat [chicken only]. for about 5 months i lost bout 15 lbs. i was pissed of all the work i put in but not that much results. i just need a few more lbs. lost. so wish me luck.

Anonymous:  Eating that much cereal can just be boring after awhile. It's definately something for a quick fix.

Anonymous:  I have two words for everybody, Weight Wachers! It's Safe and it works. I have no problem with using the Special K diet as a two week jump start, but you need to learn to eat healthy for the rest of your life. I personally love Special K & Berries and the Vanilla Almond for a light dinner when I'm in no mood to cook, but you can't do it everyday. Everything in moderation. Good Luck to everyone and please make healthy choices for yourselves.

Anonymous:  I haven't even started and i'm feeling defeated already after reading the comments

Anonymous:  I lost 85 lbs by not eating any cereal or bread products with the exception of Wasa whole grain or fiber. It took a year and i find that if I eat any bread or pasta it sets me off on an eating binge. Weight watchers is the way to go.

Anonymous:  OMG 73 lbs thats too skinny if you dont get off the diet ASAP your gonna have serious health issues if you dont already have them. Eat healthy, drink lots of water and excersize is the most important thing, if you follow that you dont have to starve yourself you can actually eat whatever you want in moderation.. good luck everyone

Natalie:  Shouls I start this diet because it seems to me that cases vary. i have a year to lose 30 pounds and am clueless to what diet I should try. Does anybody have a suggestion?

Anonymous:  I have beeen eating special K cereal for about two weeks, i have noticed that i lost 4-5 pounds doing it. But I realy like the cerael and the bars and they realy fill me up so i will keep doing it. GOOD LUCK

Anonymous:  Cant you guys see that people are playing! that person does not weight 73 lbs and you know nobody died from eating special k!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kitty:  I don't mind the Special K diet. I do, however like to have a glass of wine with my one meal. How does this impact my weight loss? Anyone?

Anonymous:  I'm starting this diet today. I lost over 30lbs a few yrs ago an I just watch my carbs and Ive been able to maintain my weight. Through the holidays I eat lots of bad carbs like cake , ice cream, therefore Ive put on a few lbs that I would like to get back off. Ive been walking 3 miles twice a week an watching my carbs, eating soup w/ just veggies an meat... for a week and Ive only lost 1 lb... So I'm going to try this diet... I hope I lose not gain.. These products contain alot of sugar so Im a little nervious about trying this ... The protein water has lots of sugar but the protein mix has 0 ....

Anonymous:  How many bowls of Special K can you eat a day an lose weight anyone..?

Anonymous:  This could be a good way to start, and then go on Weight Watchers. But as everyone has been saying everything in moderation. I also don't believe that someone had died from eating Special K. I'm an RN and that sure would have made the national news, don't you think??????

Anonymous:  roflmao...and he died...that was good. Thanks for the giggle. I am going to do the challenge as a kick start...gosh I hope I don't die. roflmao

Anonymous:  We are starting this special k diet next week monday. we are really excited and hope to see results fast our goal of weight loss is 10-12 pounds within the next month we plan to exercise a lot while taking this diet but eat what we want at dinner GOOD LUCK EVERYOOOOOONE!!!! :]

Anonymous:  The special k diet sounds wonderful, but will it work? Maybe for someone who only as 10 to 20 lbs to loose. But for someone who as a lot to loose i question the diet. How many bowls of special k can anyone eat without getting tired of it?

Anonymous:  It does work! I've been on it for 2 months and have lost 38 pounds. I eat a bowl for breakfast, and lunch, then have a weight watchers meal for dinner. I do snack, I have 2 to 4 pieces of fruit a day. Usually oranges or apples but melon would probably work even better. I don't always eat a weight watchers meal, sometimes I make my own, but I started out with those the first couple of weeks. It helps with learning portion control.

Anonymous:  I have been in the special K diet for 2 weeks and i have lost 5.5 lbs!!

Anonymous:  It's supposed to be a 2-week challenge to help you drop 5-7 pounds. It's not a healthy choice if you need to lose more than that, IMO.

Anonymous:  Yea i have been on this diet for 5 days and have lost 5 pounds but i also only have water. NO SODA But its working for me right now and i hope it keeps working because prom is coming up and i want to lose 30 pounds before March 20 but im not exercising and mybe that will help me more.

Anonymous:  so all you do is replace two meals with any brand of special k cereal, is exercise nescisary?

Anonymous:  I started with watching my calorie intake and walking, in 1 1/2 weeks I lost 5.6 lbs. I am at 139.4, I want to weigh 120 again, so I am going to do the special k and see what happens. I love the K2O protien water and protien is needed in the aid of weight loss. I love the vanilla almond special k. I also have my snacks of the 100 calorie snack packs, plenty of water and the good ole treadmill. So far so good.

Anonymous:  Yea, that 73 lb. girl really needs to STOP! I dont think you are loosing weight on the diet......i think you just have some problems. That is the most uhealthy thing i have ever heard of. This diet works! But not in that way....

Anonymous:  I think the girl that is 73lbs should really get off the diet! Are you nuts? I love the specila k cereal and the feel hunger drinks. i will stay on the diet. i was 189lb and now i'm 178. doesn't sound like much weight loss, but i think if you get on this diet you should drink lots of water and exercise daily.

rita:  i just started the challenge yesterday and i hope that i really see some results, but overall i know that i can stick to it and make it work.good luck to all!!!!!

Anonymous:  Really if you people are starving it's because the portions you ate before were too BIG! you're only supposed to eat servings the size of your fist. In starting this diet i had to shrink my stomach by letting the feeling of hunger happen. The thing is hunger is an emotion and goes away. Special K is a tool to lose the initial weight and to shrink your stomach so when you're off you can eat healthy and eat smaller portions to maintain the weight that you lost.

anonymous:  I just started the Special K diet yesterday. I like the taste and the bars are delicious! I am finding that I am still hungry in the evenings . My prob is sitting watching TV. I like to snack! I will be good for 2 wks and follow the diest, if I don't see a change I will have to try something else.

D:  I have been on the Special K diet for almost 2 weeks and have lost ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! I am a bit discouraged! I am going to stick it out through the 2 week mark but if I don't see results I will have to find something else to do!

Victoria:  i tried this for 2 weeks. and it worked. i lost 5 pounds. some people are bad mouthing this saying its not filling. but really, it kinda is. maybe 1 cup doesnt seem like alot. but after the first few days you're not as hungry. plus, i ate 3 fruits a day, the 2 bowls of cereals, dinner, and 2 snack bars. it worked for me.

Jeticoan:  I will begin the Special K Challenge on Sunday , and I will maintain it for at least 2 months. It could really work for those of you who want to lose weight. 3 years ago, I went on a similar diet, eating nothing but cereal, and I was doing aerobics 2x a week, and I lost 30 lbs in 2 months. It really works. Try it and remain dedicated you will see that can lose also. I know that it wasn't healthy but I was tired of being fat. I will begin my challenge Sunday and I will stick to it because I need to get in my wedding dress. Wish me luck!!!!!!!!!

Zack:  I started doing this diet a week ago and have lost 6lbs already. I do get sick of just Special K all the time so I replace it with other cereals that are similar in nutrients. i.e. Rice Crispies, Cheerios

Cin:  That person didn't mean 73lbs. they meant 173lbs. People on the news don't live under 80lbs. it was TYPO!!! I started the special k diet and it works great! 10lbs in 2 weeks was no proble :) The feeling of hunger will kick in for the first few days, but then your stomach will shrink and eating small portions will fill you up-fast! I eat a bowl for breakfast with fruit, 2 hours later I eat half of a special k bar with half of a special k water for a snack, a bowl for lunch, the rest of my remaining snack 2 hours after lunch and then a healthy under 500 calorie dinner. Sometimes I flip lunch and dinner depending on my schedule. I walk for 30 minutes on the days that I can and I remember to drink lots of water, because most of the time we think we're hungry when we're just dehydrated. The special k diet is not a fix all diet, you still need to eat a healthy blanced diet once you lose the weight you want. Good luck to you all !!!

corey:  i can't wait to start the special k challenge i am trying to reach losss of ten or five pounds wiish me luck

kathy:  I want to try this diet but I am afraid this will be a flop like all others. I enjoyed the comments that I have read. Do you really think this is a healthy diet? Looking for any comments you might have. Good Luck to everyont that is doing this diet.

Morgan:  I have been on this diet for about a week now and it is truly amazing... im only 16 about 147 and i want to get to 130 thats 17 pounds i hope that this diet will work i have tried so many and they all fail me! i do though feel hungry throughout the day for lunch i eat the 10g protein special K bar and it doesnt last me throughout the whole day i suggest also adding in the 5g protin water to help keep you full!! good luck!!

sar fielding:  BE WARY!!! - I have just finished 3 weeks on the special K diet with a bowl for brekkie, one for lunch, and a proper dinner. I am slightly overweight with a BMI of 26.7. Yet really feel yuk after doing this diet! The last few days I actually put weight on as I was really badly constipated! It is a man made food and my body has had a hell of a time trying to break down the rough flakes! Plus I felt dizzy and light headed, and have come out in a really bad outbreak of spots on my chin - which must be the chemicals and additives from its ingredients! In all I have not lost that much weight - going to the gym has toned me up - I lost the most amount of weight this morning when the laxatives I took before bed worked (sorry to be so graphic!) Overall this diet has not worked for me - I was hoping it would be the cheaper way to diet - but it has made me realise that fresh fruit, veg, chicken , and fish, nuts, pulses, and seeds - combined with the gym - Are the only way forward when it comes to losing weight! Many thanks Sarx Ps Kelloggs better not take this blog off!

Trinity:  OMG!!! I am so excited about starting my Special K Diet. I bought the blueberry and vanilla crisp cereal bars and the cinnamon pecan cereal. I really really want to lose weight. I want to lose about 30lbs. Imthink this diet, taking my hydroxycut and exercise would get me 30 pounds in no time. I'll keep you posted on my weight lose!!!! Wish me luck!!!

Silwendo:  Hi all, and congrats to those strong people who have lost some weight. I have been on a no starch and carbohydrates for the past month and have lost 5kg but now I am bored with this diet and I am so happy that just today I came across special k and have to loss another 5kg so I will try it and see what happens in the next two weeks.

hott babe:  I've always been skinny, and eat special K just because it tastes good, for breakfast lunch and dinner, now I know why I'm skinny! Yippee.

stephanie :  I've been on the Special K diet now for almost 4 weeks, I've lost about 8 pounds. I eat two portions of the cereal each time. I think it's great. I don't crave sweets or junk food anymore, just regular food. So when I eat my regular dinner each night, that craving is satisfied. If I get hungry, I just have a fruit salad, since you can have unlimited fruits/vegetables on the diet

Anonymous:  ok first of all the one who is 73lbs doesn't anyone think she LOST 73lbs not weighs it? Second I started special k 4 days ago and lost 2lbs already. I love cereal and there is no problem for me eating it twice a day. Just follow the serving sizes and you'll be fine. shrinking your stomach sucks but so long as you have small meals every 3 hrs you will survive... i have my cereal in the morning, and ceral bar 3 hrs later then another bowl of cereal 3 hrs later for lunch and then depending if i want the protein water or another cereal bar 3 hrs later... then i have my normal dinner. Timed eating schedule 7am, 10am, 1pm, 4pm, and 7pm. try it, it works, hard at first but its will power.

zara:  hi why would u want to eat special k for ur main meals

tata:  I'm starting the special K diet today and I feel great about it! I really hope I can loose these 30 dreadful lbs that have been haunting me ever since I turned 23 yrs old, (I'm 26 now) I have lost it and gained it back 3 times, but my friend tried this diet and it worked for her and she looks great!! Wish me luck, and good luck to everyone who is trying to get those extra pounds off!

Anonymous:  I'm starting it today!

steph:  i put four stone on while pregnant, so i hve been on this diet for a week already lost 5 pounds and dont find it hard at all cause i normally have special k for breakfast anyway so im only changing the lunch. i havent over done exercise just started walking instead of using the car, its easy to follow if you keep yourself busy and try not to think about the diet. my partner also did this diet with me but gave up on second day as he was thinking about foods he could have been eating instead of special k.just try to think positive. everyone could lose weight if they put there mind to it. good luck!

Tilly:  I tried the diet last year and had the runs. That's NOT a good way to lose weight. I was also going through stress at the time so I don't know if the 2 were related.

m.t coffen:  my sister-in law lost 200 lbs on this diet and died the only ones happy about it were the pallbearers

lesley:  i dont like milk. would it be ok to substitute this with low fat yoghurts?

jennifer:  i dont like milk either, but eating the cinnamon pecan special k cereal the milk no longer has a bad taste. i have been on the special k diet for 2 weeks now. i am glad i decided to do it. the flavored cerealss are not bad nor are any of the snack bites or bars. i dont even usually get hungry. my only question is does anyone know if its ok to have a "cheat day" once a week? i have really been craving a something real food in the afternoon.

Heather:  I've been on it for two and a half weeks now, I'm planning on being on it at the most up until Christmas. I don't know how much weight I've lost as I don't believe in weighing myself (waaaay too scary!) but I know I have lost a LOT of weight. The day I started it I tried a pair of trousers on that wouldn't even pull right up, let alone fasten - and I am now wearing those trousers to work. I don't feel very hungry, and I thought I'd get bored but as I never used to eat during the day anyway I'm just having the cereal instead of the two meals I skipped - and I don't think I could ever get tired of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes!! I swap the cereals round so I don't have the same one twice a day and that helps a lot. I'm doing a bit of light exercise too - and I must say I've not felt this good in ages. Just hope I can keep it up till December!!!

George:  I have been on the diet for 4 days now, have lost 5 lbs. I eat the special k with strawberries for breakfast with soymilk, snack on dry cereal all day and eat another bowl at dinner with soy milk. Then do 30 min of cardio at gym at 20 in the steam room. I feel great! Oh, plus i do 70-90 crunches, 10-20 pushups and 20 reverse lifts for back of the arm toning. just need to stop eating the unhealthy, greasy food and eat. plus, a normal food day once a week is always a good thing. dont starve your body of things it needs too much. that's how you crash and binge eat then gain it all back.

bam:  I have been on the special k diet for two weeks and tomarrow is weigh in day, last week I lost 4.5 lbs, and did not have a problem sticking to the plan. I eat the 2 bowls, 2 snacks and 2 cups of fruit during the day, for dinner I eat a lean cuisine and a cup of veg. After reading the comments above it seems to me that the people who are having the easiest time of this plan are the ones who incorporate fruits and veggies. way to go everyone who is sticking with it and I would def encourage anyone just thinking about it to try it!!!

Dee:  I was on the Special K thing for a little over a week. I lost about 7 lbs in less than a week. I only ate a bowl a day, as a snack and ate a small portion of salad for lunch but sometimes I skip lunch and I just have a sandwich bag full of the dry cereal. I also exercised like 1.5-2 hours a day excluding the weekends. I had to stop eating Special K because one day, my friends were having chinese food and since they didn't want me grubbing on salad while they had a feast, I skipped my salad and only ate half of the chinese food. Later that night, I felt weird and ended up puking the whole night including the next morning & afternoon. Aparently, I had the stomach flu and was running a high fever. Special K is a decent way to go but I think I went overboard. Plus, I don't believe in buying the special K granola bars/water. A waste of money. Now I'm back on a new diet. Basically, I just eat salad when i'm hungry or craving for something. I lost 5 lbs in 4 days (with an hour of exercise a day)

cat:  I'm looking forward to trying this, i love cereal and i'm not one of those people who never eat breakfast. I don't usually eat special K though, I usually eat weatabix :)

shelley:  I started the special K diet earlier this year, just for a week to try it out, and I lost 7 lbs in a week. Though, along with eating two bowls of cereal a day..I ate what I wanted to eat for dinner! Chinese food, whatever..but I also worked out for an hour each day..and you really need to lay off sodas while on any diet..and drink water..and even milk is good for you. It's a great diet, I think and I'm about to start it back.
