Special K Challenge
Are you up for this special challenge?
You've probably seen the commercials - excited women dancing around with bowls of Special K cereal. You probably don't get this enthused after your morning breakfast, but does yours help you lose weight?
The Special K Challenge says that if you'll follow their simple dietary guidelines, including two bowls of Special K cereal each day, you can lose up to six pounds in just two weeks.
The Special K Challenge promotes a community effort, by partnering with Yahoo Health. There you can join the Special K Challenge group, to participate in forums and chats with other challengers and access weight loss tips.
You're advised to visit with your doctor before beginning the Special K Challenge.
- A simple approach
- interactive online community at Yahoo Groups
- Fast approach to weight loss that is relatively healthy
- High fiber diet
- Lacking in balanced nutrition
- A temporary solution
Provides little guidance for planning dinner meals
The Special K Challenge is much like a meal replacement diet. You'll begin the day with a bowl of Special K cereal for breakfast with skim milk and fruit. Then replace your typical lunch with a bowl of Special K cereal. You'll then enjoy the dinner of your choosing - the healthier the better. Throughout the day you should consume plenty of fruits and vegetables to replace unhealthy snacks.
Special K has a variety of cereals and snacks to help you stay committed to the program. There are six cereals including Red Berries, Vanilla Almond and Chocolatey Delight. There are also many flavors and varieties of snack bars, protein meals, shakes, cereal bites and bars. Plus, the recent addition of Special K2O Protein water in refreshing flavors like Strawberry Kiwi and Lemon Twist. It should be noted that some of these food items, like the protein bars, contain partially hydrogenated oils- which means they are a source of trans fats.
There is not any guidance provided from Special K regarding exercise.
If you're looking for something to jump-start your weight loss, maybe you can try this for a week or two. Maybe it will be a physiological boost for you to continue. Otherwise, the idea of an obviously temporary eating plan seems like a losing proposition. Be sure to read the food labels of all of the Special K items as you'll want to avoid the ones that list partially hydrogentated oil in the ingredients, as this is a source of trans fats.

Monday, Jan 16, 2012 will mark my daughter & my 2 weeks on this diet. So far, I have lost 5 lbs., more than my daughter because I weigh more. We have a protein shake for breakfast, a crisp & fruit for morning snack, cereal & milk & a fruit for lunch, crackers for afternoon snack, and one of the dinner recipes in the evening & dessert if suggested with the dinner recipe. We also exercise, Mon, Wed, Fri on a Bowflex treadclimber; Tues, Thurs & Sat using a pilates video. Rarely get hungry. Sometimes add a lot more veggies to evening meal. A favorite is smothered cabbage with carmelized onions (no sugar added). Plan to continue beyond the 2 weeks.

I've been on this plan since the 11th of January. I'm enjoying it. I'm following the plan and drinking lots of water and doing as much exercise (walking dogs & cleaning house) as much as possible. I've lost three pounds in three days! Yahoo!!

I did this last year around this time, and I got down to my goal weight, just before I found out I was expecting #3. I'm looking to get back there again. I love all the bars and shakes, and the snack bars are great too, very filling. I also drank a lot of water, and tried to get some good excerise, but chasing babies all day long really helps with that... I think if you are looking for something to help get to started this is the way to go, I really saw results, and it helped give me the boost I needed. Also, you need to exercise at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes, and plan healthy dinner meals. It's common sense for most, but others need more guidence!!! Hope everyone is doing great and best of luck!!!

Today is my second day of the Special K diet and i like it so far except that i am hungry. I'm used to eating whatever i want but since i had surgery on my foot i havent been able to do much physical activity but im healing now so with a cardio program and this short diet i am very optimistic. I am 19 and 5'3" and 128. i used to weigh 110. I would like to get down to that but i know your only supposed to lose a few lbs with this diet so i think it will be a great jumpstart. Thanks to everyone who is so motivating!

Well I tried this for the two weeks and lost 2 pounds of the 6 I want to loose. I was down 4 pounds at one point, but it didn't last more than a day. I swung around a lot on this diet. I did NOT loose any inches anywhere. I followed everything to the letter save for a single day that I went over 1500 calories. Most days I didn't hit 1100. All that sacrifice for little reward. Working out and even just walking each day is pretty much manditory for any weight loss, just eating less can help if you have a lot to loose, but if you are like me and only want to loose a pant size and a few pounds, it just won't do.

This diet works, but you dont have to buy the special k cereal, you can do it with regular corn flakes or any generic brand, breakfast a bowl of cereal with banana, lunch wherever you want, and for dinner another bowl of cereal, and drink water, and u will lose weight.

A few years ago I tried this diet and was successful. I am 4'10 and was 108 pounds and dropped my weight down to 103 in two weeks! I'm trying this diet again because it is summer and I think this is a great way to kick start my goal of staying in shape!
posted Jun 22nd, 2011 2:40 pmStick to it and have self control! You must remember that cheating on a diet will do your body no good if you want to cheat yourself! I'm currently 110 and hope to lose 10 pounds in the next few months and tone up!!

I am 15 years old, about 5'11 or so, and weigh about 207 pds... My parents are doing a great plan from a nutritionist and have lost a great amount of weight, but the food has a bit of an aquired taste, and it's really hard for me to eat it all day. I've loved Special K cereal since I was little, so when I went to Walmart today I planned on just getting a box. I saw on the front that you could lose an inch off your waist in 2 weeks, and me, being very unhappy with my weight and figure, wanted to take up on the challenge. I got two boxes of cereal, a box of cereal bars, and some granola (all Special K brand). The only part I dont have is the skim milk. So I plan on starting it tomorrow. Does anyone know any healthy choices I could use for dinner? The meal plan my parents are using recommends as much protein as possible (chicken, eggs, turkey, no red meat). Would that be good for me to have for dinner, or would it make a difference? Any suggestions?

I've spent the past hour reading all of the reveiws from everyone and seems like there are only a few that truly understand this entire concept. To the RN who made the statement about the guy dying..lol...kudos to you!
posted May 27th, 2011 4:06 pmI've put on about 10 pounds after several years of being my ideal weight thanks to Weight Watchers. In fact, I"m a Lifetime member but I do think the Special K program will jumpstart me again and get me, and keep me motivated to watch my food intake.
I believe if you have a goal, like the girl going to her prom, that helps. Goals are so important! My husband is taking me on a cruise in August to renew our wedding vows so that is my goal! I'm excited to be starting this program tomorrow. tonight I'm heading to the grocery store.....thanks for all the input everyone! will keep you all posted! Happy Memorial Day!

posted Apr 19th, 2011 9:25 amSara, You dont need to lose any weight if your only 130 and 5'8"! Infact your right on target with your BMI, Im a CMA and I wouldnt advise you to go below 126. your BMI should be between 126 - 154 lbs.. You shouldn't even be dieting at 15, your running risk of becoming anorexic at this point if you lose 10 to 12 pounds !!

I took this challenge expecting to lose 6 pounds in 2 weeks at the most, and I lost 7. I ate Special K cereal every single morning, replaced lunch with either a protein shake or meal bar, had 2 special k snacks, and had fruits and veggies. I took long walks almost every single day, and this worked great for me.

I just started the Special K Challenge on Saturday and so far I like it. The last two days were a little rough because I used to eat all day everyday out of sheer boredom. I think that this diet is a good way to jumpstart your weight loss in anyones diet plan. When this challenge is over, I plan on sticking to a low calorie diet. I've been eating the meals that they say to eat for lunch and dinner and it sucks that I don't keep a lot of that stuff on hand so I'm constantly out buying it, but the meals are delicious. I highly reccommend the Jamaican Chicken with Mashed Sweet Potatoes.. It's super yummy! So is the avacado veggie sandwich! Yum!!!
