South Beach Diet Supercharged

Take this popular low carb diet to the next level.

BACKGROUND

The South Beach Diet has just gotten a makeover. The new and improved South Beach Diet is encapsulated in the book The South Beach Diet Supercharged: Faster Weight Loss and Better Health for Life. South Beach Diet mastermind and leading cardiologist, Dr. Agatston, is now helping Americans make smarter changes in the way they eat and exercise so that they will lead healthier, fit and longer lives. In addition to his trademark eating plan, he and exercise physiologist, Dr. Signorile, have created a three-phased workout regimen that mirrors Phase 1, 2 and 3 of the South Beach Diet. New meal plans, expanded recipes, the latest on nutrition research and inspiring South Beach Diet success stories are also part of this Supercharged plan.

This expanded version contains a more flexible eating plan and a new exercise plan that is designed to supercharge your metabolism and shed pounds.

PRO
  • The South Beach Diet Supercharged emphasizes clean and wholesome eating
  • Encourages interval exercising, which is effective and time-efficient
  • Includes practical tips and resources for cooking and preparing meals, going out to dinner and exercising.
  • Includes more vegetarian-friendly recipes and 40 new recipes
CON
  • The South Beach Diet Supercharged includes some inaccurate nutrition assertions
  • Many of the South Beach Diet already-prepared foods contain artificial sugars which can have a laxative effect
DIET and NUTRITION

If you're already familiar with the South Beach Diet then you'll be delighted at the newly expanded food selections, which include 40 new recipes and two full weeks of all-new meal plans for Phase 1 and 2.

The overall plan of the South Beach Diet has not changed with this updated version. The emphasis on lean proteins, low-starch veggies, and low-fat dairy still comprises the crux of this diet.

Similar to the initial South Beach Diet, you will eat three meals a day and small snacks when needed. The plan is also split into its two trademark phases. Phase 1 is the stricter phase, allowing you to only eat low glycemic veggies, lean proteins and small amounts of fat. Phase 1, which lasts two weeks, is followed by Phase 2, which adds a bit more leniency to what you can eat. Whole grains, fruit and alcohol are allowed in addition to all of the foods in Phase 1, but only in moderation.

Phase 1 of Supercharged includes more meat, poultry, vegetables, beverages, desserts, soy foods, legumes, healthy fats, and prepared foods. Phase 2 includes everything in Phase 1, plus more fruits, starches, and a little alcohol.

Even if you're a vegetarian or a picky eater, you can customize your own meatless menu.

EXERCISE

The South Beach Diet Supercharged exercise program combines both high intensity and low intensity interval exercise focusing on a 10-week walking program. In addition, there are 27 strengthening and toning exercises that help you build muscle and develop a more defined look. The exercise section comes with photos and instructions.

The newly-devised exercises are intended to be done on most days of the week. They are a 20-minute daily investment on your part. Accompanying the book, the South Beach DVD, can also be purchased.

CONCLUSION

Maybe it's part genius marketing and part sound nutrition, but many people have had luck losing weight with the South Beach Diet. Its new supercharged version is updated with new meals, information and an exercise plan, a key component of any weight loss regimen that was missing in the previous South Beach Diet editions. Its emphasis on arming you with information on how to make longstanding behavioral changes when it comes to eating and exercise is the mark of any successful healthy lifestyle plan that keeps you fit for the long run.

Im really excited to see all your positive feedback on this diet - like many I am sure it's a positive full sprint race out the door but lose steam as the weeks go on! Any suggestions you all may have would be greatly appreciated to sustain the "detox" in the 1st two week?! I had the older SB book and again, failed to continue with the diet because I'm a social butterfly and seem to just say the heck with it. But at 32 I've decided I've got to do something here... The book is in the mail, being delivered tomorrow (great deal on barnes and noble - $6 bucks for a editors edition or something like that) then off to clean the cabinets and stock up on the food list for phase one. wishing you all the best in your continued success! posted Feb 18th, 2010 12:57 pm

Hi Barbara. That is a great question. Although I personally have not tried the South Beach Supercharged diet, as the Health and Wellness Editor of DietsInReview.com, I can help guide you along with some suggestions for how to avoid constipation while following the diet.

The Supercharged Diet encourages regular consumption of low-starch and low glycemic vegetables and certain fruits. Fortunately, many of the approved vegetables and fruit for this diet are very fiber-rich. Try a variety of lettuces like romaine, green lettuce, mixed greens and arugula. Cucumbers, tomatoes and red, orange and yellow bell peppers all have ample amounts of fiber in them as does asparagus, mushrooms and celery. When fruits are allowed, they are most likely to be low glycemic ones like berries, which once again have tons of fiber. Just make sure that you pair a fiber-rich and low glycemic veggie food with each protein snack: Turkey breast rolled in leaf lettuce, cottage cheese with raspberries or chopped bell peppers with chopped chicken breast.

Good luck!

I am interested in trying the SB diet, but I am concerned that my constipation problem will be worse then it is with all the protein and so little fiber. Any suggestions? posted Feb 14th, 2010 12:57 am

I originally did Atkins which did work - I lost 8 lbs in the first week, it was very high in fat and I found it embarssing to be adding cream to my coffee in front of people while I was sitting there saying Im on a diet and quite overweight. So I started South Beach as I find the low carb really worked for me. I love the lots of veges and cheese. I lost about 50 lbs on South Beach over a year. I have been off the diet for about a month and been really bad eating sandwiches and cereal for every meal. I think I hadnt had it for so long its like I was trying to make up for it! So I have gained about 6 lb in a month and have started back on South Beach just this morning and am just finishing my ham and cheese omlette. Best diet ever I think, very healthy too. posted Jan 25th, 2010 3:30 pm Profile send message  Message

This is the best diet in the world. I did the South Beach Diet and changed my eating habits for 5 years. I lost 80 pounds and kept if off for 5 years. I went back to my old eating habits and have gained a lot of the weight back. I am not starting the South Beach Diet again and hope to not go back to my old eating habits again. This is a GREAT plan and it works. posted Jan 5th, 2010 9:05 am

Great diet. Went on this with hubby a few years ago...we both lost around 25 lbs in about a 3-4 month time frame. However, we slowly went back to our old, baaad ways and those pounds slowly crept back on...BUT, we've got each other pumped and getting ready to try the Super Charged SBD this week! posted Oct 6th, 2009 12:59 pm

Have been on the diet before and lost 30 lbs. I kept it off for a long time but got back into my old habits. I am a carbahollic. We are a family of 4 and ALL need to lose or get our matab back insink.
So... I am not only teaching myself and going through with-drawal crazy, I am getting it from everyone and having to teach them as well. We have been on the program for 3 days and things are getting better here. I can tell the differance already and they are saying the same thing. wml posted Sep 23rd, 2009 10:44 am

I have been on the SBD for 2 weeks now. I lost 4lbs the first week, and haven't been on the scale since. I have noticed that my clothes are a lot looser though. I do really well during the week, then fall off on the weekends! So I am going to stay on phase 1 for another 2 weeks and weigh myself at the end. The diet works great, I just need to work on my mental strength. posted Aug 10th, 2009 10:09 am Profile send message  Message

I have been on the SBD for about 2 weeks now. The first 4 days I lost 4lbs. Haven't been on the scale since, but my clothes are definetly looser. My problem is I do well all week, exercise like crazy, then slip up on the week phase 1 another 2 weeks without cheating, so I can finally move to phase 2. My goal is to lose 15lbs posted Aug 10th, 2009 10:04 am

I was all excited to start this diet bc so many people have said that it works. After the 2 weeks all I lost was 6 lbs. I was very disappointed in myself since my body can loose weight fairly quickly. I'm 29 years old and work out so it's not like I dont' do any activity. Could it be that I was eating too much peanut butter? Any tips on what to avoid? The good thing is that I kept on going and didn't sabotage the hard work of Phase 1. :) posted Jul 20th, 2009 9:22 am

Rob - I am so glad someone else mentioned the cranky part. I had a complete crazy moment at work on the second day of the diet. I completely snapped and am NEVER like that. Quite the embarassing shock! So, yes beware the detox process... I felt really weird. On day five now, feel GREAT, have already lost 6.5 pounds.

This is the first diet that I have been on in 10 years of on and off dieting that has not left me hungry and yearning to cheat. I feel FULL all the time. I have hypoglycemia and even though it's only day 5, how my body feels has been completely changed. Have not gotten light headed or "loopy" once, even if I go for hours between meals. I think this is a great diet for those have problems maintaining their blood sugar levels. This is a way of life I can stick with. posted Jul 17th, 2009 9:30 am

I haven't tried the super charged yet. I am here at the site to do so. I ahve been on SB since 2004 and have lost oh about 50 pounds. I still follow it but sloppy these days so that is why I am back to get recharged and continue. I have nt gained back any weight but have been at a happy stand still for sometime. I want to loose more now about 20 pounds. My health numbers are perfect and on no meds. My dr says do not change anything. posted Jun 2nd, 2009 11:01 am

I've been on the south beach twice and each time I had wonderful results, but the holidays come and I get stubborn. It truly is a healthy way of life. It's sad to say, but eating healthy has become expensive. Those with diabetes should seriously consider this diet. By the way, I think the best time to start this diet (the second time) is in May when it is warm and salads are especially delicious and cool for those warm days. Get all of the south beach cookbooks and you'll find that there's really nothing that you can't enjoy, no matter what phase you are in. I lost 35 lbs the first time and only gained about 20 of it back and that came off easy the second time. I just need to work on the holiday fare and find a way to keep from over indulging. posted Apr 27th, 2009 8:50 pm
