BACKGROUND BACKGROUND Start the Diet Now Advertisement

The Diabetes DTOUR Diet: The Revolutionary New Food Cure is a book written by Barbara Quinn and the editors of Prevention Magazine that will release October 27, 2009. This book is designed to help those with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar and lose weight through proper eating.

The Diabetes DTOUR Diet is a six week program that will give you more energy, bring your blood sugar levels into balance and get rid of those extra pounds. In addition to the book, Prevention offers the program online, which can be started immediately.

The foods included with the DTOUR Diet are high in what the author calls the Fat-Fighting Four: fiber, calcium, vitamin D and omega 3s. To make sure you’re getting plenty of these for nutrients, there is a day-by-day, 6-week plan that has been proven to help you lose weight, control blood sugar levels and boost energy. This program is specifically targeted to help meet the weight loss needs of those with high blood sugar.

On the DTOUR Diet, you don’t have to worry about counting calories because it's already done. You can actually eat some of those wonderful foods you’ve been passing up like quesadillas, French toast, ice cream and pudding. You will also receive daily tips and tools to aid in your weight loss to keep you on track.

There are testimonials of those who have already had great benefits from the DTOUR Diet. Author Barbara Quinn developed all of the menus included in the diet and is a full time clinical dietitian and certified diabetes educator.

DIET and NUTRITIONDIET and NUTRITION

Food is the major source of weight loss with the Diabetes DTOUR Diet. Several meals are included in the program that give you a day-by-day breakdown of which foods to eat. On the diet, you will eat three meals and two snacks every day.

While this is not a calorie-counting diet, meals and snacks incorporate the Fat-Fighting Four. Calcium-rich foods which may play a role in fat-burning are encouraged. Think fat-free milk, low fat dairy, spinach, white beans and kale. In addition, because of Vitamin D's role in preventing Type 2 diabetes, this mineral is also a staple part of the DTOUR diet in both food and supplement form. The healthy fats found in Omega-3s like salmon, mackerel, flax seeds, walnuts and tofu are also highlighted and lastly, the satiety power of fiber-rich foods are a mainstay of each snack and meal on the DTOUR plan.

On a typical day, you might eat a bowl of fortified whole grain and fiber-rich cereal topped with fat-free milk and fresh blueberries. Lunch might be a spinach salad with walnuts and seared tofu or curried lentils and cauliflower and dinner might be chicken with pears and blue cheese or seared Caribbean scallops with black bean and mango salsa.

Recipes for entrees are given.

EXERCISEEXERCISE

While food may be the headliner in the DTOUR Diet, exercise plays a strong role in its proven ability to facilitate weight loss and improve overall health and wellness. The DTOUR plan includes a customized fitness plan based upon your lifestyle and needs. In addition, you are encouraged to chart your progress online or in your private journal and you can connect with the experts at Prevention magazine to ask questions directly related to fitness and exercise.

The DTOUR plan calls for an exercise plan that gradually increases in intensity over time. The mainstay of the workout routine includes a walking plan as well as a strength training one.

CONCLUSIONCONCLUSION

The Diabetes DTOUR Diet has been created as a six week program to help those with diabetes lower their blood sugar, lose weight and boost their energy. For convenience, the program is available either online, or through the book. The program is offered by Prevention Magazine and has already had some posted results of those who have had success following it. If you are an adult with type 2 diabetes who wants to try something to get back on track and toward your healthy goals, this program might be for you.

BY far the best program ever for lowering blood pressure, controlling diabetes and losing weight (finally). I am down 14.5 lbs in about 6 weeks, and have lost 5 inches on my waist. The food is easy to prep, commonly available, and I eat more often than ever. By adding Omega 3, fat free dairy and other power foods, this plan works!

Does the Diabetes DTOUR Diet really work? I would just like to know: does this diet really work? No matter how much you weigh and your blood sugar levels? My blood sugar so far is very good: 86 (usually before eating) - 135 (after eating). I get more symptoms of low blood sugar throughout the day or while working out (which I'm hoping to help resolve). Even though my doctor says my diabetes is well in control and I work out I can't seem to lose much weight and I'm desperate, because I would like to come off my medication and not run into any other health problems my family suffers from. I would also like more energy; I used to be able to work out for a good hr maybe hr and a half and now I can do 30 minutes at best before I start feeling dizzy and sweaty because my sugar is dropping. Does the book cover any of these issues? I would just like to know how effective it really is before I spend money on it....Thanks!

My husband and I have done this diet together. So far, he has lost 60 lbs and I have lost 40!! I was on 2 diabetes medications and now, one has been eliminated and the other one cut down. My last visit, the Dr. said I may be going off completely after my next A1c test. I have enjoyed that the meal plan is all set up and I don't have to decide what to eat. We have stayed with the 2 week plan for 7 months and enjoy it very much. We are never hungry and surprisingly have no cravings. I have one 'con'. I cannot find the online part. I have tried because they are supposed to have resources to be used, like a tracker. Although, the plan has an exercise program, we have not yet enbarked on it.....the loss has all come from diet alone. We WILL get to the exercise soon!

I've lost 22 pounds on this plan. I don't understand the "con" above about not emphasizing exercise, my book has a whole section showing exercises and encouraging exercise! What's with the "Con"???
