Inspiring the Biggest Losers

Bethany Hamilton's Healthy Lifestyle

Bethany Hamilton was sort of an average Hawaiian surfer girl until a fateful trip to the water when she was 13. She was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark, which severed her left arm and required multiple surgeries to save her life. Just a short month after the attack, the teen was back on her board, and by the age of 17 she was a world-renowned professional surfer.

Also known as the Soul Surfer, Bethany's story is one of inspiration, proving that no hurdle is insurmountable.

We recently had a chance to interview the now 22-year-old professional surfer and learn more about how she keeps fit, motivated, and how she enjoyed a recent appearance on NBC's The Biggest Loser.

DIR: You recently appeared on The Biggest Loser. What was that experience like?

Bethany: I was so excited to be part of NBC’s Biggest Loser because I love helping people overcome challenges. I absolutely love to encourage healthy lifestyles and get others excited about living healthy too. It was fun to help them achieve their health goals while having fun doing it! This year the show has a theme of “no excuses” and I loved having the opportunity to share my story, explaining that no matter what, contestants can accomplish whatever they put their minds to.

All of the contestants had never surfed and it was awesome to see them get up on their surfboards and ride the waves. While contestants were fearful at the beginning to even get in the water, it was truly an exhilarating feeling to see them conquer their fears! I like what one contestant shared “Fear is just a feeling… You can overcome it.”
