The Blood Sugar Solution is a new book written by Dr. Mark Hyman that will be released on February 28. The program can be used for losing weight, preventing disease and feeling great. Dr. Hyman is the bestselling author of UltraMetabolism and The UltraMind Solution. This book offers a six week plan and will teach you the seven keys to treating diabesity, which is the combination of obesity and diabetes that is affecting millions of Americans. Topics covered in The Blood Sugar Solution includes myths about obesity and diabetes, food addiction and the real causes of diabesity. You will also see how big food, farming and pharmacies are killing people. This book will introduce a new area throughout the six week program. The book also offers recipes and shopping lists for your convenience. Some of the diseases you can help prevent with this program are diabetes, heart disease, dementia, stroke and cancer. Eating on The Blood Sugar Solution is addressed during week one of the program. Boosting your nutrition is also the first of the seven steps to treating diabesity. Part one of the book deals with some important information relating to our current eating habits and tells you how to make important changes. Of course you should avoid fast food, junk food and foods that are processed industrially. When looking at some of the key causes of disease, there five causes for all diseases other than single-gene genetic disorders. Those five causes are poor diet, chronic stress, microbes, toxins and allergens. Dr. Hyman mentions that there are a few things needed to have a healthy human. Those are real, whole, fresh food, sunlight, water, sleep, movement, rhythm, love, connection, meaning and purpose. The seven steps to treating diabesity include boost your nutrition, regulate your hormones, reduce inflammation, improve your digestion, maximize detoxification, enhance energy metabolism and soothe your mind.

During the six week program, you will introduce a new element each week. Week one asks you to eat your medicine and gives you nutrition basics for everyone. Good nutrition is the foundation of this program. During the next six weeks, you will avoid the following:

  • Sugars in any form: This includes agave, maple syrup, stevia and artificial sweeteners
  • All flour products including gluten-free: This includes bagels, breads, rolls, wraps and pasta
  • All processed foods: Anything with trans-fat or high fructose corn syrup must be eliminated
  • All gluten and dairy: These foods are the most inflammatory and must be removed
  • If on the advanced plan, all grains, starchy vegetables and fruit: Avoid things like winter squash, peas, potatoes, corn and root vegetables like rutabagas, parsnips, turnips and all fruit except for one-half cup of berries

You are advised to eat clean, green and organic whenever possible. This includes buying seasonal produce that is grown without the use of harmful pesticides. For your meat, buy sustainable, organic and grass-fed whenever possible. There are menus and recipes for each week of the program. You can follow the menus provided or create your own with some of the recipes in the book. Below is a sample day of eating during week one of the program:

  • Breakfast: Poached Eggs over Spinach
  • Snack: Devilled Eggs
  • Lunch: Salmon Salad in Steamed Collard Wraps
  • Dinner: Lentil and Chicken Stew over Quinoa with Kale and Almonds
EXERCISE

Exercise is covered during week four of The Blood Sugar Solution. Dr. Hyman states that exercise is probably the most powerful medicine for treating diabesity and other diseases. He even calls it a miracle potion. Some of the benefits of exercise are that it makes your muscles and cells more insulin sensitive, balances and lowers blood sugar, promotes weight loss and loss of belly fat, regulates your appetite, lowers blood pressure, raises good cholesterol and many others. You should combine aerobic conditioning and strength training. You can also do interval training to burn calories all day and lose more weight in a shorter workout time. Substituting 30 minutes of interval training two or three days a week for your regular exercise routine can give you more benefits in less time. For regular exercise, you should do a minimum of 30 minutes of walking every day. Track your steps with a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps each day.

A more vigorous and sustained exercise plan is often what is needed to reverse severe diabesity, though. You can run, bike, dance, play games, jump on a trampoline or do whatever is fun. During this exercise, you should reach for 70 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate for up to 60 minutes, five to six times per week. Dr. Hyman follows the motto that a little is good and more is better. You can start slowly with five minutes and work your way up as you feel stronger. You should also incorporate stretching into your routine. Stretch for at least five minutes before and after exercise routines and try to do 30 to 60 minutes of full body stretching twice a week.

CONCLUSION

The Blood Sugar Solution offers a lot of helpful information for those that are already suffering from diabesity and for those that want to prevent it. The program is designed by Dr. Mark Hyman and will get you results. Although the eating plan may be difficult to adjust to, it goes a long way toward eliminating harmful foods and replacing them with the nutrients your body needs.

I would like to know what exactly to eat in the advanced plan, whithout following all the recipies, Im on the run all the ...I wiilling to cook but those recepies seem complicated..please help

My sister has lost almost 150 lbs following this diet. She was approximately 300 lbs and now wears a size 12 and looks fabulous. After 30 years of struggling with weight, she did it. no surgery, drugs, etc. just plain hard work, diet & exercise, which any doctor could tell you is all that's needed to lose weight, most people want to take the lazy way out or the "surgical" way because they get instant results, but this diet plan is a lifetime commitment.

Very difficult to follow. There are few snack options. It is a labor intensive process to cook every meal from scratch. The book outlines what not to eat but not as much of what"to"eat. Online resources have been promised months ago in the book to help manager and support and as of June are still not accessible.

I was in the beta program and have been following this eating style (it isn't a diet) since October. I still can't believe how much better I feel. No more hot flashes, joint aches, extreme fatigue, or brain fog. my A1C went from 6.1 (at risk of diabetes) to 5.6 (normal) all my numbers improved so much that my doctor cut my BP and Cholesterol meds in half and I lot 35 pounds so far. The best thing about eating this way is that I don't get cravings for junk food so I control the food instead of letting it control me. I will be following this plan for life.

This is not a weight loss diet, though you will lose weight. Lots of weight. It's a feel good diet, a nutrient dense lifestyle eating plan that feeds our bodies the way they were intended to be fed. Dis-ease is a side effect of our food choices that our bodies don't like. The Blood Sugar Solution Diet (meal plan) will alter your life in ways you may have never imagined. It did mine. Brain fog, gone. Intense internal cold all the time, gone. Low energy, gone. Weakness, gone. I feel young, strong, energetic, and have my brain back! Oh, and yes and I lost weight, 9 lbs, even though that wasn't my goal going into the beta test. I've been on the advanced plan since Oct 2011 and will continue on the basic plan (with personal modifications due to food sensitivities) for the rest of my life. My blood test is medical evidence of improvement and how I "feel" along with the improved quality of life are my personal reward for taking control of my health! You're looking at this for a reason. I'm confident you'll be just as pleased as the rest of us if you decide to read the book and join a group.

Lost 17.5 pounds during the 6 week beta test eating delicious food. It definitely takes work to shop and cook if you were like me - someone who ate out or convenience foods 90% of the time. However, I can honestly say that it is worth it - in addition to the weight loss, I've never felt better in my life. My teenagers also enjoy the food and learned a lot about nutrition Make a commitment and try it - you won't regret it.

This is a great way to get your life back. I lost 20 pounds. lowered my blood pressure, lost over 8 inches off my waist, and am eating lots of great food doing so. If you read the studies in the book, it won't be so hard to make the choices of eliminating the foods that are hurting you. Loved this diet . Found it a little hard at the beginning but the results were so wonderful that it was certainly worth the effort. Lost the belly fat and lost all cravings. Have tons of energy and feel so healthy. No reason to ever go back to eating sugar ,wheat,dairy, caffeine. I'd rather feel like a kid again.

This is really not a diet, but truly a way of life. The program eliminates the cravings for junk food almost immediately. You are eating whole natural foods which are delicious. You eat when you are hungry, eat delicious foods, and plenty of them.

I read this book pre-publication and it's great. I lost 15 pounds and no longer have to take cholesterol or glucose medication. When I play tennis I feel like I play as I did 10 or 12 years ago. I see the whole court better and plan the next shot earlier.

the emphasis of this book is on making lifestyle changes that support good health. It's true that some dramatic shifts are suggested. Using communication (Facebook, Skype, etc.) with others who are also committed to changing unhealthy patterns creates a unique support system that really works! Kudos to Dr. Hyman for aiming high!
