The Big Breakfast Diet

Eat a big breakfast and lose tons of weight.

BACKGROUND Start the Diet Now Advertisement

With evidence that overweight women lost nearly five times more weight on a breakfast cure diet than their counterparts did on a low-carb diet, it's time to pay attention.

The Big Breakfast Diet is a unique weight loss approach in which you eat all of your favorite foods for breakfast, before 9 am, and spend the rest of the day losing weight.

Here's how: Based on the body's natural rhythms, eating a big, complete breakfast revs up your metabolism; helps burn more calories during the day and more fat at night; satisfies hunger all day long; boosts your energy; eliminates cravings for sweets; and reduces the risk of serious health conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

After explaining the science behind the diet, and how the body's hormones and metabolism process food differently depending on what time of day you eat, The Big Breakfast Diet centers around a full 28-day meal plan - breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, plus recipes.

The day begins with a big breakfast, a smoothie or shake, pancakes with berry syrup and ricotta cheese, Canadian bacon, a breakfast sweet—and ends with a moderate, delicious dinner.

Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz, a clinical professor at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Hospital de Clinicas Caracas in Venezuela, originally published her diet book in Venezuela and it became a South American bestseller, selling 300,000 copies.

DIET and NUTRITION

The Big Breakfast Diet is a 28-day diet plan that requires you eat a big breakfast, one that is full of protein and contains 600 to 800 calories, and then spend the rest of the day eating according to a specific eating plan.

According to the creator of the diet, there is no such thing as too big a breakfast. In fact, your breakfast can have as much as 3,000 calories as long as you follow the eating rules for the rest of the day.

Here is how the diet works:

You start the day by eating a big breakfast that adheres to these rules:

  • Must be consumed before 9 am.
  • Breakfast must include 7 servings of protein (including 2 servings of dairy), 2 servings of carbohydrates, 2 servings of fat and 1 sweet.
  • Lunch must include 3 servings protein, 3 servings low-calorie vegetables, 2 servings starchy/sweeter vegetables, 1 serving fruit.
  • Dinner must include 0-3 servings of protein, unlimited low-calorie vegetables, 2 servings starchy/sweeter vegetables, 2 servings fruit.
EXERCISE

There is no specific exercise plan provided.

CONCLUSION

Most of us now know the importance of eating breakfast, and The Big Breakfast Diet takes breakfast to a whole new level with its 28-day weight loss plan.

While its assertion that eating 3,000 calories at breakfast will result in weight loss is a bit far-fetched, you'll probably be better off eating a healthy 1,200 to 1,500 calorie diet in order to shed pounds.

Nonetheless, if you are looking for a fun and new spin on losing weight, The Big Breakfast Diet will definitely allow you to have your cinnamon roll, ham and eggs and eat them all too. Just as long as you eat them before 9 am.
