You are what you eat

Listen, your body may be telling you something.

BACKGROUND

Much like the Americans, the English are embracing the reality TV genre. A show that airs on England's Channel Four, You Are What You Eat, is a diet program that teaches you to listen to the needs of your own body in order to create a healthy diet and lifestyle. It has now spun-off into a book, written by show host, Dr. Gillian McKeith.

All those aches, pains, sleeplessness, cravings and illnesses mean something. Learn to identify that all of these things indicate certain deficiencies in the body. For instance, a sore tongue could be a lack of iron. In that case, start eating more leafy greens like fresh spinach.

You Are What You Eat says that with a proper balance of fresh and raw foods, ideal food pairings and the inclusion of supplements, you'll reduce unhealthy cravings and risk for certain disease, feel more energized, and lose weight.

PRO
  • Appropriate for the entire family
  • Vegetarian-friendly
  • Promotes fresh, organic foods
  • Promotes exercise
CON
  • Recommends colonics and enemas
  • Plan is not easy to understand
  • Will take time to implement
DIET and NUTRITION

You Are What You Eat includes the Abundant Food List, with 100 food items that you should definitely incorporate in your diet. Things like fresh fruits and veggies, legumes, leafy greens, fish and seafood and tea. You'll eat three meals and three snacks each day when following You Are What You Eat.

The way in which you pair foods can have an influence on your body. The book details how you should pair foods and when paired, in which order they should be eaten to create ideal digestion.

The book is full of meal planners, shopping guides, food label guidance and advice on supplement use.

EXERCISE

You are encouraged to get in about an hour of exercise each day, as well as start and end your day with meditation. Exercise can be walking, dancing or even jumping on a trampoline.

CONCLUSION

Unless you're someone with the time to manage this full-time program, You Are What You Eat is not going to suit the lifestyles of most people. There is a lot of information to keep track of; the food pairing can be quite difficult, and it will take some time before you develop the intuition that is necessary for this diet. While the fresh, whole foods provide for a healthy diet, not all foods are available to everyone. You Are What You Eat is certainly a great foundation and will provide a healthy lifestyle for those able to commit.

Even taking one hint of advice from her book is worth it. As far as the colonics go... I have had a few. Although it seems extremely violating... its not AND the effects after are wonderful. posted Dec 29th, 2008 9:01 am

I bought this book and I love it. I think it has some great information that would help anyone learn to gradually eat better.

I agree the actual diet is rather complicated but I found that even implenting one or two suggestions a week has given me solid results.

Although it will take me longer to lose the weight, I will be learning to eat healther in the process which will ultimately help me get to where I want to be weight wise and health wise.

I do not ascribe to the enemas/colonics but I do like how much adding the teas to my day has made me feel.

I would recommend this book just based on the solid nutritional advice alone. posted Nov 9th, 2008 1:42 am
