BACKGROUND

Diets tend to fail and leave you hopping from one to the other because they rarely set you up for success. The Mayo Clinic Diet, created at the renowned medical center, is one program that is more accurately described as a lifestyle change. This program will not only help you lose weight, but more importantly give you skills you can use throughout your life to live healthier and keep it off.

The Mayo Clinic is a highly regarded medical institution in the U.S. Based on research conducted there in the weight loss field, the Mayo Clinic Diet was created. The program focuses on four key ideals that will help you manage a healthy weight for life. These are:

1. Eat Well
Use the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid (its version of the food pyramid) as a guide for eating.

2. Be more active
Either with a scheduled exercise program or just by getting up and moving more- the more you move, the more you'll lose.

3. Identify Goals
Finding goals that are important to you will keep you motivated and moving forward.

4. Stay Motivated
It's important to keep a positive attitude, take each day one at a time and keep supportive company.

FOOD & RECIPE

The Mayo Clinic Diet promotes balanced eating. You will not find many foods restricted and best of all, you'll be allowed to eat. Many diets reduce calories and food choices to a disappointing (and sometimes unhealthy) level.

You'll follow the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid- a visual food guide. Each day, you should consume no less than seven servings of fruits and vegetables, four-to-eight servings of carbs (focus on whole grains) three-to-seven servings of lean protein (chicken, fish, legumes) and dairy (low- or no-fat milk, yogurt) and three-to-five servings of unsaturated fats (olive oil, nuts, avocados). You're also allowed no more than 75 calories for sweets each day.

Some delicious meals suggested for the Mayo Clinic Diet include:

- Pancakes with strawberries and maple syrup
- Tuna Salad Pita
- Spaghetti with Marinara Sauce
- Rosemary Lemon Chicken with Brown Rice
- Poached Egg with Whole Wheat Toast

EXERCISE

It's no secret that the more active you are, the healthier you are. Simple tasks like working in the yard, walking the dog, climbing stairs, shopping and household chores all keep your body moving and burning calories. The Mayo Clinic Diet's only requirement is that you commit to regular exercise - whether that's just increasing physical activity or an exercise program. Your goal should be about 30-60 minutes of moderate exercise almost every day. You want to elevate your heart rate, breathe a little heavier and possibly even break a mild sweat.

EXPENSE

The Mayo Clinic Diet is available for a fee from ediets.com. Typical subscription is about $18/month.

PRO

- Based on sound medical research by medical professionals
- Clearly-stated instructions
- Lifestyle program
- Promotes healthy diet and consistent exercise

CON

- Fee-based program

CONCLUSION

A weight loss program that is more interested in giving you a healthy lifestyle than a quick fix and is supported by reliable medical research is what The Mayo Clinic Diet provides. This program balances both diet and exercise, and helps you set realistic goals- your only option is success. While the plan doesn't provide step-by-step rules and recommendations, it does give you important information for making your own healthy and informed choices. The subscription price is reasonable and ediets.com is a reputable source for online dieting.

Linda:  I am a big time snacker, it helps me avoid binging at meal time or ever feeling ravenously hungry. The Mayo Clinic diet seems to go in the opposite direction, no snacking and eat until you are full. Has this concept worked for anyone? Would love to hear more.

Kashia:  Hmm- I don't know about this. This looks scary low in calories. Am I supposed to believe I won't feel hungry or want to snack with so little food? I don't believe it.

Brenda G.:  I tried this a while back and lost about 15pounds in a month.

PML1:  I would think you'd loose the weight from lack of calories- almost like starving yourself. I agree, this sounds scary.

Anonymous:  There is no such thing as the Mayo Clinic diet. Not everything you see on the web is real.

T:  If you do the diet according to the way it is written, believe me, you will not be hungry. I'm a snacker and am hungry a lot of the times but from the very first day on this diet, I have not been hungry. I have to make myself eat the 3 meals!
