Biggest Loser Recap Season 9 Episode 2 with Amanda Arlauskas

Week two on the Biggest Loser ranch is notoriously difficult for the contestants. After losing huge numbers the first week, it seems to be very hard to lose another big number a second week in a row. Bob and Jillian have their work cut out for them, but they obviously know what they’re doing. The trainers dig in to the personal lives of these contestants in order to bring any issues to the surface so that the players can get past them and become more successful in their weight loss.

bob harper and michaelThis week each contestant has a wake up call from Dr. Huizenga. He explains to each team what their weight is actually doing to their bodies. With diabetes, heart disease, and other medical problems, these players need something to open their eyes and make them realize why it is so essential to get this weight off now! The test Dr. H used was the Know Your Number HealthScore, first introduced on this episode and made available to those at home to try. The biggest eye-opener was with Bob Harper and Michael Ventrella, when Bob was dressed with more than 200 pounds of weight in order to get a feel for what it’s like to carry around such weight.

The players were faced with their second challenge. They had to cross a 40 foot pool on a balance beam, and carry across 10 balls as a team. Luckily for the red team, Melissa Morgan and Lance Morgan finished first winning immunity, which for the second week is very important! Unfortunately for the white team, Maria Ventrella‘s fear of water caused her to stumble, smacking her face against the cement platform, and causing her to be transported to the hospital. For coming in last, Maria and her son Michael will receive a two-pound penalty at this week’s weigh-in.

The week two myth seems to prove true.  The weigh in shows low numbers from each team, nothing like last week.  Unfortunately for the purple team, they lose a combined total of seven pounds sending them under the yellow line. Patti Anderson requests that she be sent home, leaving her daughter Stephanie Anderson safe for one more week!

Alot of people have said the "wake-up calls" were really shameful and derogatory to the contestants as if they were being shamed. I am not sure how I feel about this, I thought the positive spin was put on it towards the end, plus, we probably did not see ALL of it...

Amanda, from your perspective as a contestant, do you think they were shamed?

Thanks for the great recaps Amanda :)

I'm glad that finally Bob got a team to admit to gameplay when weighing in under immunity. It was so obvious...I guess gaining a point was tampered by losing 8 pounds so it still wasn't in the positive, from what I understand from past seasons, a weight gain removes one's immunity.

I'm so glad that white team seemed to break through a ton of barriers this week. I was at first disappointed with Maria's self-fulfilling prophecies, but I am so glad that it seemed Jill was able to really reach out and get through to her. And it was a huge wake-up call when Michael had Bob wear this weights. I don't think even Bob realized how heavy that was. I still honestly do not know how Michael is walking let alone working out...usually people are completely bedridden when they weigh as much as he does. I can tell they both had big breakthroughs this week because even with a two pound penalty they come in second place. So it makes up for the lesson from the school of hard knocks where Maria literally beat herself up.

I'm so glad that this season there is a lot of mutual respect between everyone. This was evidenced by everyone voting Patti off as per her wishes. I think her consults with Doctor H really was the push she needed to get super focused and healthy. She looks really healthy now and I'd be surprised if she has more than 15 or 20 pounds left to lose.

Also I have to say wow to the pink team. The daughter's real age was 30 years older than her bio age...I don't think I've ever seen a real age number where the years lost was more than the years lived before. That's got to be a hell of a wake-up call. She lost double digits IIRC so I'm thinking it was the boost she need as well (I forgot her name but I'm sure she's one to watch out for)

Finally John did pretty good in spite of being the only team short of a teammate. I'm glad he was able to pick up and keep going after James left. He also seemed to have some breakthrough moments where it seems the trigger for his weight gain was losing several family members in a short period of time. But if Abby from last season can do it when her husband and kids died, I'm sure John can find a way to work through his grief while getting his health under control.

Love your recaps Amanda! I couldn't believe when Maria fell and broke her nose. How scary to be pushed that hard, but she really kind of did it to herself. No? I was also concerned with Bob wearing all that weight like Michael. Just goes to show how dangerous it is.
