For many people suffering Crohn’s disease, the colostomy bag on which they rely, is something they hide away. But one make-up artist from Worcester has become an internet sensation after posting a photograph of her in a bikini online, exposing her colostomy bags to the world. The image of Bethany Townsend, 23, has already been seen by more than nine million people. And the positive feedback has given her the confidence to pursue her dream of becoming a model. Bethany Townsend, 23, became an internet sensation after posting a photograph of her in a bikini (pictured) online, exposing her colostomy bags to the world. It has been viewed by more than nine million people and the positive feedback has given her the confidence to pursue her dream of becoming a modelbikini ‘I didn’t expect this kind of reaction at all,’ said Mrs Townsend. ‘The photo has been seen by millions of people and it’s had 190,000 likes and over 10,000 comments on Facebook - it’s just gone ballistic. ‘I’m just so glad that it’s brought about more awareness of Crohn’s disease and it’s made me feel so much more confident about the colostomy bags. ‘If I can inspire or help other people in my position to feel a little more comfortable in their own skin then I’m really happy.

‘When I first had the bags fitted I was devastated - the reaction to this photo has really helped me accept them.’ The 23-year-old was fitted with her colostomy bags in 2010 after being diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at the age of three. Crohn’s disease is a condition that causes inflammation of the digestive system, affecting the sufferer’s ability to digest food, absorb nutrients and eliminate waste. In extreme situations, like Mrs Townsend’s, it becomes necessary to remove the damaged section of the intestine and bring the healthy part out as a stoma - known as a colostomy.

Mrs Townsend said the response to her photograph, posted on the Facebook page of the charity Crohn's and Colitis UK, was overwhelming. She said: 'I didn't expect this kind of reaction at all.'

She said: ‘Growing up I’d had various surgeries to try and combat the Crohn’s. ‘I’d go in and have sections of my intestine cut out, but I’d only be in remission for a couple of weeks before it came back again. ‘Then, four years ago I woke up in the morning and couldn’t move because I was in so much agony. 'I had to break a glass on the floor to alert my mum who called on ambulance. 'When the paramedics came, they lifted up my top to see that my surgery scar had split open. ‘I was rushed to intensive care where they doctors told my family I would need more surgery as my intestines had become infected and inflamed again. 'I had no idea when I woke up that I would have the bags.

It was only after Mrs Townsend met and married her husband, Ian, 33, (pictured on their wedding day) and jetted off to Mexico last Christmas that she finally felt ready to embrace the colostomy bags

Mrs Townsend still suffers with Crohn's disease and hopes for a cure. Since getting the colostomy bags (pictured) she has had a stem cell transplant but caught MRSA, which almost killed her
‘When I first woke up and my mum told me about them I was just relieved as I’d thought I was going to die. ‘But when I came out of hospital and everything finally sunk in, I remember going upstairs into my bedroom and just bursting into tears. ‘I’d known a colostomy bag might have been an option but it was always something that I had wanted to avoid. ‘I had a really good cry that day, and since then I haven’t shed another tear - I’ve just got on with it I suppose.’ It was only after Mrs Townsend met and married her husband, Ian, 33, and jetted off to Mexico last Christmas that she finally felt ready to embrace the colostomy bags. ‘When I met Ian I showed him my bags straight away, but he didn’t bat an eye lid - I actually felt like I was over reacting,’ she said. ‘He taught me that there was more to me than the bags and would always encourage me to show off my figure.
Sam Faiers describes the symptoms of Crohn's disease
The make-up artist's Crohn's is still active and there is a possibility that she may have to have a bowel transplant to help treat the condition

It was six months after her dream holiday that Mrs Townsend decided to share her holiday photos with the world to raise awareness about Crohn's disease. She got in touch with Crohn's and Colitis UK Facebook group to see if they would let her post something on their page
WHAT IS CROHN'S DISEASE? Crohn's disease is a condition that causes inflammation of the digestive system.Inflammation is the body's reaction to injury or irritation and can cause redness, swelling and pain.Crohn's disease is one of the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).The other common form of IBD is Ulcerative Colitis.Crohn's is described as chronic, meaning it is a life-long condition. Sufferers will have periods of good health, remission, as well as times when their symptoms flare up or relapse. There is currently no cure for the disease, but drugs and surgery can give patients long periods of relief from their symptoms. The cause of Crohn's disease is not well understood. Experts believe the condition is, in part, inherited, while an abnormal reaction of the immune system to certain bacteria in the intestines is thought to contribute.Viruses, bacteria, diet, smoking and stress have all been suggested as environmental triggers, but there is no definitive evidence that any one of these is a cause of Crohn's.Crohn's causes ulcers to form in the gut and inflammation that affects the body's ability to digest food, absorb nutrients and eliminate waste in a healthy way.Symptoms include: Abdominal pain and diarrhoea Tiredness and fatigue Feeling generally unwell Mouth ulcers Loss of appetite and weight loss Anaemia - a reduced level of red blood cells It's estimated around 250,000 people suffer from the condition in the
UK. It can start in any age, but usually appears for the first time
between the ages of 10 and 40.The disease can cause complications including perforations. They happen when a severe blockage ruptures the bowel, making a hole. The contents of the bowel can leak through and form an abscess. It causes pain and a fever.Source: Crohn's and Colitis UK
'I wasn’t sure, but in Mexico I finally realised he was right and decided to wear my bikini. ‘At
first I was nervous and worried that people would stare but it was
fine. 'I realised that the colostomy bags didn’t control me or define who
I am. ‘The staff at the hotel asked me about the bags on the last day of the holiday, but rather than being offended I was glad because it meant I could talk to them about Crohn’s and tell them what it is. ‘Ian’s always been my rock and supported me no matter what. 'We’ve had a tough few years but I know he’ll always be there for me.’ It was six months after her dream holiday that Mrs Townsend decided to share her holiday photos with the world to raise awareness about Crohn’s disease. She got in touch with Crohn’s and Colitis UK Facebook group to see if they would let her post something on their page. ‘I sent them the picture and my information, and it all blew up from there,’ she said. Mrs Townsend still suffers with Crohn’s disease and hopes for a cure. ‘Doctors had hoped that the colostomy bags would put an end to the Crohn’s but four weeks later it was back,' she added. 'I then underwent a stem cell transplant but unfortunately I caught MRSA of the skin and the blood and it nearly killed me twice. ‘Since then
my Crohn’s has still been extremely active, I’ve lost more weight and
now I’m waiting for the NHS to fund a drug that hasn’t really been in
the UK. ‘If
this doesn’t work a bowel transplant is in talks as I can’t have any
more of my intestine out as I haven’t got much left. 'But I’m still
really hopeful and after everything I’ve been through I know I’m a
strong person.’ Mrs Townsend is considering getting back into modelling - a career she gave up on after she was fitted with the bags. ‘I
feel confident enough now to put myself out there and pursue modelling
again,' she said. 'I did a little bit of work here and there before I
had the colostomy bags, but once I had them fitted I thought that was
the end of the dream. ‘I’m
looking forward to chasing my goals, and I know now that nothing can
hold me back. 'I won’t let the Crohn’s control me anymore.’
Mrs Townsend (pictured with her husband), said: 'I¿m looking forward to chasing my goals, and I know now that nothing can hold me back. I won't let the Crohn¿s control me anymore'

Nancy Hany - it is bravery you need with this disease. It's relentless, slowly swallowing up pieces of your digestive system, exhausting you and making normal life feel like a fantasy. I was diagnosed at 17, ileostomy (basically the same but a different part of the bowel) at 21. Yes I look at people in bikinis and think "I wish" and no, I don't display it. I do wear a one piece for swimming and no-one can tell. When that choice had to be made, with the love of my friends and family and the duty that I owed to them and to myself to fight back, it was a positive decision. A way to control the disease rather than it controlling me. The fight with it still continues but now I'm a visitor to the bathroom instead of a prisoner. I went travelling to India, alone, with one. I couldn't have done that before for fear of a messy incident. If it comes to it, or you need to do it, be brave and think of the gains, not the losses. You'll be surprised at your resilience.

I have a friend who suffers from Chrons and when it came out about Sam from TOWIE suffering too, she thought that there would have been more awareness, but instead people focused on how much weight Sam lost and how great she looked. Thats not what its about, you don't see the the real effects of a Chrons sufferer. My friend has a blog and I couldn't be more proud of her for telling her struggles.

Articles from a stupid girl suing McDonald's for her own incompetence to this wonderfully brave woman. THIS deserves to be written about. You're beautiful, don't ever let anyone else say different.

Good for her! My family has just gone through a similar experience and I cannot describe the emotional agony of a patient waking up to missing a part of their body and having to recover with "the bag". What was amazing was to discover how many people are going through this life changing event. Kudos to her for not being ashamed because a positive face brings awareness to not only the disease but to the many people dealing with bowel conditions be it through Crohns or Cancer. The negative commenting folks are the ones who should be ashamed.

Waterpro PaintBall Jammer
Good Jammer for training
By JKM
from Happy Valley, OR on 02/20/2014
Size: TRUE
bikini
Used for lap swimming 2-3 times weekly. Bottom seam is tight on thigh at first (this is a compression suit) but feels good in water. NIce material.

Nike Swim Poly Core Solids Brief
Nice fit & feel
By Dan
from Bremerton, WA on 02/20/2014
Size: TRUE
bikini
This suit is fully lined polyester so has a nice feel and looks great. My current one outlasted spandex 8 to 1. I wear my suits tight so downsized from 30 to 28 for just the right fit. Only 3" on the sides, but I like that for lap swims.

TYR Poly Mesh Trainer
Finally the one I was looking for
By Fred
from Rockford, IL on 02/20/2014
Size: TRUE
swimdress
I go lap swimming around 3 X a week and got a tough time to find a swim suit for my size. (40 - 42). This suit feels very comfortable and till now it kept his color. Most swim suits change color after 3-4 times swimming in chlorine water swimming pools or in Jacuzzi. Will recommend it to everyone. Hate the one which go down to your knees (or further) .

Arena Powerskin Carbon Pro MK2 Jammer
15 year old Competitive Swimmer
By SpeedoBro
from Iowa on 02/20/2014
Size: TRUE
discount swimwear
Suit has great compression supports the muscles - usually at the end of a 200IM my legs are feeling fatigued this suit gave me that extra bit of support needed to finish strong. I have always worn a Speedo Tech suit, LZR Elite, FSIII, FSll and LZRpro are all suits I have competed in with great success but wanted to try the Arena powerskin carbon pro. I LOVE IT! It will be difficult to go back to Speedo after feeling the compression and speed this suit has provided. I ordered a 28 and sizing was right on for my measurements - yes tight but provided me with the support I was looking for. The suit was worn for the first time at my High School District and State meets, I took 4 seconds off of my 200 IM and 2 seconds off of my 100 Fly bettering both of my sectional cut times that I already had. USA State and Sectional meets are still to come over the next 30 days. I may have to invest a second Arena suit before Sectionals. Thanks Arena!!!

Monday, June 16, 2014, 5:31 PM - Thunderstorm watches are in effect across Ontario with heavy rain and hail expected to impact several communities.
EXTENDED ACTIVE WEATHER COVERAGE: Tune in to The Weather Network for live updates on the summer storms in your area. Our team of reporters and meteorologists in the field provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date coverage.
In southern Ontario, the risk extends from Windsor to Ottawa and north into Sudbury.
"Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain," Environment Canada says in a statement.
The rain threat is expected to persist into Monday evening.

watches The storm is linked to a cold front that is bringing humidex values in the low to mid-30's to parts of southern Ontario. The trend is forecast to remain through the week.
The cold front is also attached to a system that is bringing heavy, flooding to much of northern Ontario, prompting thunderstorm watches and warnings across the region.
Quarter to toonie-sized hail is possible in some places along with locally heavy downpours.
RELATED: Visit the Alerts section of the website to keep on top of active weather across the country.
"Fast-moving water across a road can sweep a vehicle away," EC warns in a statement.
"Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles."
While no tornado watches or warnings are in effect, it's important to remember that all severe storms are possible of producing a tornado.

Psychoactive battle not over
Home » News » Regions
By Lynda van Kempen on Thu, 26 Jun 2014 The Regions: Central Otago
ray-ban
He may have stepped back from a policy which would
effectively ban sales of psychoactive substances in Central
Otago but Mayor Tony Lepper says the battle is far from over.

cheap replica ray ban sunglasses
The Central Otago District Council yesterday adopted a draft
local approved products policy (Lapp). Under the Psychoactive
Substances Act 2013, councils can adopt policies to control
where such substances, once approved, are sold.

They could control where the products were sold but had no
control over the hours of sale or age limits of buyers and
could not prohibit sales within the district, council
environmental health officer Ray Applegarth said.

''This [Lapp] is the small window of opportunity we have in
control of these substances,'' he said.

Legal advice given to Local Government New Zealand said there
was a clear distinction between the power to regulate and the
power to prohibit. If the council adopted a policy which
effectively banned any retailers by making the ''permitted
areas'' for retail premises too small, the court would be
likely to treat the policy provision as illegal, Mr
Applegarth said.

A public meeting on the subject, in Alexandra in May,
attended by more than 130 people, called for the council to
implement broad exclusion zones which would do just that -
effectively exclude any retailers of the substances in the
future. Mr Lepper told the meeting he wanted to make it as
hard as possible for the retailers and backed the broad
exclusion zones.

Mr Lepper said the 200m ''buffer zones'' around sensitive
sites, such as schools, reserves and community halls, in the
council's amended draft policy, limited where an approved
product retailer could set up. Old Cromwell town centre was a
permitted site but the buildings in that historic precinct
were owned by the council.

Under the draft policy, there were no permitted areas in
Omakau, Ranfurly or Naseby retail centres and although there
were permitted areas in Clyde and Alexandra, they would
probably be unsuitable locations for a retail outlet. The
Clyde one was on a site now occupied by a wastewater
treatment plant. Submissions on the draft policy open on July
5 and close on August 8.
