Yoga Dictionary

A form of breath control, pranayama are specific breathing exercises that are considered one of the five principles of yoga. The term contains the word “prana” which is the vital life-sustaining life force and “ayama,” which means control or discipline. Pranayama is performed in tandem with a yoga practice and is believed to promote purification of the body, mind and spirit. The breathing techniques involve performing specific inhalations, exhalations and breath retentions that are ideally done under the direction of an experienced pranayama yoga teacher.
