Food Label Glossary

In order to call a food item “reduced or fewer” in calories it needs to have at least 25% fewer calories per serving than an appropriate reference food (or for meals and main dishes, at least 25% fewer calories per 100 gram serving). Be careful with this one. A 50-calorie reference food means the “reduced” version is only fewer 12 calories. Don’t split hairs and don’t get duped by savvy marketing. Many healthy foods are naturally low in calories (fresh or frozen fruits, vegetables, and beans for example).
