The Food Pyramid

A History of Nutrition in Images

The first food pyramid was created in Sweden, in the 1970s. It was intended to show consumers not only which food were necessary for a balanced diet, but also how much of each food group.

The U.S. first adopted a pyramid in 1992. It divided fruits and vegetables into two distinct groups and added a group consisting of fats, oils and sugars. The pyramid represents a paradigm shift, because it's an image that specifically points out certain foods that should be limited in the diet. The pyramid came at a moment when an increasing number of Americans were struggling with being overweight.
