Best Dip Brands
2012 Food Awards
Dips are hardly ever eaten alone, but require a good chip or crackers. The dips themselves can offer a lot nutritionally, but can become a calorie bomb when eaten with salty or fattening chips and crackers. If you're eating in moderation then choosing the best dip possible won't be a problem for you.
Nutrition Criteria
< 70 calories, 0 trans fat, <3g fat < 1g saturated fat or < 15% of total calories, > 2g fiber, < 150mg of sodium, < 3g sugar, at least 10% of the Daily Value for vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, or calcium.
Contenders
Alouette Light Garlic and Herbs Spread: This met our nutritional guidelines, but fell short with the most calories (45) and did not have enough daily value of vitamins to be crowded winner.
Wholly Salsa's Classic Mild: would have been named Best Dip but it was just over the sodium criteria by 10mg. A no-salt tortilla chip would help make up the difference on this favorite.
Sabra Roasted Garlic Hummus: This made the cut with a generous 70 calories for two tablespoons, but it offered no vitamins.
Newman's Own Mild Salsa: This is practically nothing with 10 calories, but it more sodium than the winner.
