Is the 17-day ordered meal plan an exception to the book?

My husband opted for the meal plan and I am following the instructions of the book. I noticed the ordered meal plan does not follow the book. (eg sweet potato during the first week, ricotta cheese, crepes) Are the ordered meals exceptions to the book? And it's really just a reduced calorie thing?
