Cadence App ‘Keeps the Beat’ for Cardio

The difference between just going through the motions at the gym or in your daily run or walk may just come down to some inspiring music. We’re all inspired by different kinds of music, but sometimes what we can all use is a beat that syncs with our steps.

If we’re in step with the rhythm, it can help keep us motivated. Why do you think drill sergeants have sung songs to the recruits in their morning runs for all those years?

Pretty much, if you can dream it up, there’s the technological ability to invent it. In this case, it’s all about the cadence.

Foobi iPhone App Helps Balance Your Diet

Keeping track of your food intake is the mainstay of every diet and weight loss plan. We are all familiar with the low tech version of food journaling– carrying a notebook and pen with you wherever you go in order to jot down each morsel that crosses your lips. I did it for a long while when I was actively losing weight – but often, I forgot my notebook and I’d either have to remember the meals or write them down on a scrap and then remember to transfer when I returned home. However, I always have my iPhone with me, and the new Foobi app would have been just the answer to this struggle.

Billed as “A refreshing, fun and effortless way to track and balance your meals,” Foobi is a colorful application designed to help you keep track of your food intake with the flick of a finger. (more…)

Researching Live Happy iPhone App as Treatment for Depression

For the first time, an iphone app is being used in clinical research to investigate the efficacy of using it to treat depression. A study approved by the Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Institutional Review Board is currently being conducted with the assistance of a network of therapists. These therapists are monitoring daily use of the Live Happy iPhone app in addition to their therapuetic treatment and medication management.

Live Happy is a positive psychology iPhone app based on the happiness research of University of California psychology professor and author of The How of Happiness, Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky. In my review of this app, I suggested that it would be helpful for there to be an option for push reminders to remind users to use the app each day. A Fairleigh Dickinson University psychology professor, Robert McGrath, concurs that “for it to be most effective it takes dedication and a conscious decision to work at it on a daily basis. This isn’t always easy, especially for people battling depression, so it will be interesting to learn the results and see how effectively Live Happy works in improving symptoms of depression.” (more…)

Don’t Eat That iPhone App Reveals Food Ingredients and Additives

As we all become more conscientious of the foods we’re eating and thus the ingredients that make up those foods, it certainly helps to have an ally, and the Don’t Eat That iPhone app aims to be that for consumers. While it often takes some level of formal study to read and understand the ingredient label on most packaged foods, the Don’t Eat That iPhone app simplifies the process by providing a database of more than 1,500 food ingredients and additives to help you identify the good from the bad. All at the slide of your index finger.

Listed alphabetically in a number of categories, the food additives and ingredients are searchable and clearly identify the “safe” ingredients in black and the “harmful” ingredients in red. Even better, you can select each of the ingredients to view a new screen that offers a definition or explanation of what it is, how it is used and what the problem is. (more…)
