Josh Hutcherson’s Intense Hunger Games Military-Style Workout

Josh Hutcherson, one of the lead stars of The Hunger Games, explained how he got into the shape of his life leading up to the film.

Hutcherson, who plays the role of Peeta Mellark, had to maintain a strict high-protein diet along with a military-style exercise regime before filming started. He explained how he had to make a lot of changes during this process.

“I had to put on a lot of weight, so I was in the process of eating chicken, eggs and protein and all that fun stuff.”

Hutcherson referred to his intense exercise regime as “fun stuff.” It seems he was being sarcastic as he explained that he was “in a constant state of soreness!”

Hutcherson trained with a former Navy Seal named Logan Hood. Five days a week Hutcherson was trained by Hood in sessions he called “unconventional.”

Hutcherson was left aching for days from doing activities like flipping tires or slamming baseball bats against body bags. These exercises worked out all sorts of muscles. Hutcherson said he used muscles he didn’t even know he had. At the end of the day after Hutcherson trained with Hood he left asking himself, “How am I possibly this sore?”

By the time Hutcherson and his fellow cast members went to Kentucky to begin filming he was in the fittest state of his life.

After a successful opening weekend, it appears that the hard work is paying off. Hutcherson will soon be a household name for his portrayal of Peeta Mellark.
