This week, Men’s Health announced its list of “100 Fittest Men of All-Time,” including such fitness greats as Bruce Lee, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the man deemed the “godfather of fitness,” Jack LaLanne.
While it must’ve been a difficult process to select only 100 bodies out of hundreds of thousands of elite athletes who’ve walked the Earth, the final cut boasts some of the most amazingly fit men of all time who will continue to inspire greatness well beyond their peak years of health. Here we review the top five picks with a brief snapshot of each, starting with the athlete who came it at number five: College Football Hall of Fame member Herschel Walker.
For those not familiar with Walker (we certainly weren’t), he’s a former NFL player who made a triumphant return to sports as an MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter 13 years after retiring from football. At age 40, not only was his comeback commendable but impressive, as he performed quite well winning two pro MMA bouts to date.
Perhaps more impressive is Walker’s daily workout regimen which includes up to 3,500 sit-ups, 1,500 push-ups, and an 8 mile run. Can you imagine the amount of calories it would take to sustain such a grueling routine? The man behind the Eat This, Not That series and editor at Men’s Health magazine is David Zinczenko. He was born of Ukrainian decent on December 13, 1969 in Pennsylvania and grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. At age 6, David’s parents divorced and from there he grew up with his mother for the remainder of his young life. As a child he was overweight and taunted by his brother for over-eating. By high school, David gained control of his weight and following graduation he entered the Naval Reserve. His military career sent him to Moravian College for his studies.
In 1991, David worked as an assistant editor at Men’s Journal. Just two years later he accepted a position as associate editor at Men’s Health. Then, in 2000, he made his biggest career move to editor-in-chief at Men’s Health, where he remains today.
The rising rate of obesity in America was a concern of David’s. He saw how many Americans’ misconception of food was detrimental to their health. He used his knowledge in health and fitness to launch his Eat This! Not That! book series. He helped people across America choose better food options ranging from similar Starbucks coffee to similar TV dinners at the grocery store. Tune in to the Today Show on Wednesday, September 14 for a full report card on your favorite national restaurants. Men’s Health magazine Editor-in-Chief David Zinczenko will be on the show to talk about the fast food options that can be better for your diet and health than sit-down meals.
Zinczenko will share tips from the 2012 edition of Eat This, Not That. The most updated version of this book, which helps Americans eat better without a “diet,” will be released today. Eat This, Not That aims to make the reader an expert in making positive food choices when dining out, by revealing food swaps that can save you hundreds of calories per day. It also covers many other categories of food, such as common grocery store brands.
Tune in to the Today show on Wednesday, April 6 for an introduction to Eat This Not That 2011. Author and Men’s Health editor David Zinczenco will be a guest on the show, to introduce the latest addition to this popular book series. He will discuss how much sodium is really in our food, particularly in restaurant meals. The average American eats about two times more salt than the daily recommended amount. Zinczenco will offer healthier alternatives, that won’t leave you feeling like you can never eat out.
Most people know of Men’s Health as the popular fitness magazine, but the company also offers a diet program created by top nutrition and fitness experts specifically for men. The Men’s Health Diet features a six-week plan that can help you lose up to 15 pounds, while gaining strength and muscle definition. The program further offers long-term changes that can help maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The editor-in-chief of Men’s Health magazine, has a new book out that goes deep inside the very secretive world of restaurant food. You will be amazed and disgusted and hopefully, motivated to make some better choices.
A secret that I have to share though, is that as a former restaurant owner, it was our mission to inject so much fat into our foods, that you would feel as satisfied as a well-fed baby, and return to our restaurant again and again. How do we do that? Well, for one, we would use butters and oils that have higher than average saturation levels, which allows them to cook for longer at higher temperatures without burning. Yep, you heard me right. A tablespoon of restaurant oil has even more fat than the oil you use at home. We also would use cream in places you have never even heard of. Oh, and that asian vinaigrette that sounds so low-cal? Um, sorry, but we used Mayonnaise as the first ingredient.
So yes, better food choices start with full disclosure, and you, dear dining out consumer, have every right to ask to see the recipe.
