Ashtanga Yoga

Yoga Dictionary

Sanksrit for “eight-limbed yoga,” Ashtanga yoga is one of the oldest forms of yoga. Its modern form is credited to Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, who began his yoga studies in 1927.

Ashtanga yoga is built on the vinyasa system of yoga, which describes a breathing and movement system that combines a deep breath (ujjayi) with a series of physical postures (asanas). Ashtanga yoga is sometimes informally referred to as power yoga. Famous practitioners of Ashtanga yoga include Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Donna Karan and Willem Dafoe.
