Treadmill vs Road Running

Fitness Comparisons

Running is a great workout no matter how you do it, but there are some definite pros and cons to running outside vs. on a treadmill. On one hand, running outside gives more of your body a workout, as the muscles that balance and stabilize your body work harder on uneven terrain. You'll also get a good shot of vitamin D if you're out in the sun.

On the other hand, running on a treadmill makes extreme weather conditions a non-issue. Many people find it easier to track their distance, time and speed on a treadmill. If you want this data while running outside, you may need an additional device such as a pedometer. The treadmill can also provide a lower-impact way to run, reducing the stress on joints.
