Eating on The Blood Sugar Solution is addressed during week one of the program. Boosting your nutrition is also the first of the seven steps to treating diabesity. Part one of the book deals with some important information relating to our current eating habits and tells you how to make important changes. Of course you should avoid fast food, junk food and foods that are processed industrially. When looking at some of the key causes of disease, there five causes for all diseases other than single-gene genetic disorders. Those five causes are poor diet, chronic stress, microbes, toxins and allergens. Dr. Hyman mentions that there are a few things needed to have a healthy human. Those are real, whole, fresh food, sunlight, water, sleep, movement, rhythm, love, connection, meaning and purpose. The seven steps to treating diabesity include boost your nutrition, regulate your hormones, reduce inflammation, improve your digestion, maximize detoxification, enhance energy metabolism and soothe your mind.

During the six week program, you will introduce a new element each week. Week one asks you to eat your medicine and gives you nutrition basics for everyone. Good nutrition is the foundation of this program. During the next six weeks, you will avoid the following:

  • Sugars in any form: This includes agave, maple syrup, stevia and artificial sweeteners
  • All flour products including gluten-free: This includes bagels, breads, rolls, wraps and pasta
  • All processed foods: Anything with trans-fat or high fructose corn syrup must be eliminated
  • All gluten and dairy: These foods are the most inflammatory and must be removed
  • If on the advanced plan, all grains, starchy vegetables and fruit: Avoid things like winter squash, peas, potatoes, corn and root vegetables like rutabagas, parsnips, turnips and all fruit except for one-half cup of berries

You are advised to eat clean, green and organic whenever possible. This includes buying seasonal produce that is grown without the use of harmful pesticides. For your meat, buy sustainable, organic and grass-fed whenever possible. There are menus and recipes for each week of the program. You can follow the menus provided or create your own with some of the recipes in the book. Below is a sample day of eating during week one of the program:

  • Breakfast: Poached Eggs over Spinach
  • Snack: Devilled Eggs
  • Lunch: Salmon Salad in Steamed Collard Wraps
  • Dinner: Lentil and Chicken Stew over Quinoa with Kale and Almonds

Exercise is covered during week four of The Blood Sugar Solution. Dr. Hyman states that exercise is probably the most powerful medicine for treating diabesity and other diseases. He even calls it a miracle potion. Some of the benefits of exercise are that it makes your muscles and cells more insulin sensitive, balances and lowers blood sugar, promotes weight loss and loss of belly fat, regulates your appetite, lowers blood pressure, raises good cholesterol and many others. You should combine aerobic conditioning and strength training. You can also do interval training to burn calories all day and lose more weight in a shorter workout time. Substituting 30 minutes of interval training two or three days a week for your regular exercise routine can give you more benefits in less time. For regular exercise, you should do a minimum of 30 minutes of walking every day. Track your steps with a pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps each day.

A more vigorous and sustained exercise plan is often what is needed to reverse severe diabesity, though. You can run, bike, dance, play games, jump on a trampoline or do whatever is fun. During this exercise, you should reach for 70 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate for up to 60 minutes, five to six times per week. Dr. Hyman follows the motto that a little is good and more is better. You can start slowly with five minutes and work your way up as you feel stronger. You should also incorporate stretching into your routine. Stretch for at least five minutes before and after exercise routines and try to do 30 to 60 minutes of full body stretching twice a week.


The Blood Sugar Solution offers a lot of helpful information for those that are already suffering from diabesity and for those that want to prevent it. The program is designed by Dr. Mark Hyman and will get you results. Although the eating plan may be difficult to adjust to, it goes a long way toward eliminating harmful foods and replacing them with the nutrients your body needs.

I read this book pre-publication and it's great. I lost 15 pounds and no longer have to take cholesterol or glucose medication. When I play tennis I feel like I play as I did 10 or 12 years ago. I see the whole court better and plan the next shot earlier.

the emphasis of this book is on making lifestyle changes that support good health. It's true that some dramatic shifts are suggested. Using communication (Facebook, Skype, etc.) with others who are also committed to changing unhealthy patterns creates a unique support system that really works! Kudos to Dr. Hyman for aiming high!

At last I have finally been able to loose weight by getting to the root of the problem. I have discovered new foods, taste, weight loss and a feeling of health. I eat anything I want except in the following categories: wheat, sugar, dairy, alcohol, and caffeine. I don't have to count, measure. My body finally knows how much is enough. It's so simple. While the program is for 8 weeks I have continued onward because it is so easy and I am getting to a healthful state. Great program!!!!! Try it. You will be very happy that you did.

I have changed my life and have been following this program since October of last year. I started on the advanced program and now am on the basic program. I have lost 15 pounds and am within 5 pounds of my goal weight but that is not why I am still following the program. I feel so much better. I no longer have brain fog every day, asthma, horrible allergies, no energy or two rolls of flab around my middle. In fact, the muffin top and the brain fog were the first things to go. At 53 I have more energy now then I have had in 10 years. It is hard in the beginning but once I got through the withdrawal from sugar and caffeine I felt good and got used to the program. The social network site Dr. Hyman set up is the best.

As part of the Beta Test I had amazing results. Lost 12 lbs, food cravings, and 9 % pts body fat. I was neither obese nor diabetic, but severely insulin resistant, and had a chronic case of fatigue, mind fog and low energy. Those symptoms have gone. I am now trying to reintegrate food but on a very small scale. My weight has remained the same or lowered since the end of the program. First "diet" I ever did that did not immediately gain back 5 lbs. I am truly amazed and grateful. People at my workout have asked me for the diet. I plan to buy the book to have it. I was a Beta Tester for The Blood Sugar Solution. This diet was a life-changer. Not a fad. I was not terribly overweight and my numbers were within the 'normal' range, but on this program I lost 15 pounds, have so much more energy, and was really able to see clearly my food intolerances. I had a hard time in the beginning giving up so much until I realized how much more energy I had and how I slept better. I now feel in complete control of my health and well being. My blood sugar was creeping up but not considered prediabetic. I decided to take control before that happened and I'm glad I did. I have made this a lifetime commitment and I don't feel like I'm missing out on any of the foods removed from my diet. Well worth trying!

I've been on Dr. Hyman's Blood Sugar Solution Advanced Plan for over three months. I've lost almost 20 lbs, dropped over 55 pts in my cholesterol, lowered by blood pressure to normal and have close to normal sugar. I have no cravings whatsoever and find the program very doable. It is life-changing! I'm continuing until I reach my goal weight and will then personalize the plan, as per the book, to maintain my weight. This is the only health plan that has ever worked for me, in that I have not only lost weight but am regaining my health by reversing several longterm medical conditions. This review underplays the effectiveness of the Blood Sugar Solution. This plan really opened my eyes to what needed to be corrected in my food. It's now a lifestyle for me. I never believed that I could lose/maintain/tone/etc. without counting calories. I haven't counted calories even once since I started 4 months ago. It's a liberating, wholesome, healthy plan that I will follow for life.
