Six Tips for a Healthier and More Filling Breakfast

Healthy BreakfastsMore and more research is showing that a healthy and filling breakfast is beneficial to weight loss. Here are some tips for getting more nutrients into that morning meal.

1. Think outside the cereal box. Breakfast is a great time to get whole grains into your diet. Try cooking up some brown rice, quinoa or polenta for a new take on breakfast grains.

2. Go for the protein and fiber combo. It will keep you full and energized all morning. Try putting beans and spinach or other green veggies in an omelet.

3. Get a serving of fruit in your pancakes. Stir in slices of apples, bananas, kiwi or strawberries, and don’t miss our blueberry pancake recipe.

Will Dora Help Your Child Eat Better?

It’s a fact that mothers everywhere have known for years – slap a picture of a cartoon character on a food and your child will eat more of it. Now there is proof. A recent study, commissioned by Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity gave 40 children, ages four to six, three identical pairs of snacks: graham crackers, gummy fruit and carrots. One package of each pairing was decorated with a cartoon character popular with the younger crowd – either Scooby Doo, Dora the Explorer or Shrek. After snacking, the children were asked which selection tasted better. Not surprisingly, more than half of the children chose the food with the character emblazoned on the packaging. In addition, more than two-thirds of the children indicated that they would choose the packaging with the character on it.

Don’t be Fooled by Healthy Food Imposters

yogurt cupA lot of foods appear healthy but contain ingredients that add unwanted fat and calories and can undo hours of work at the gym. Let’s look at a few of them.

  • Yogurt – many popular brands of yogurt contain as much sugar as ice cream. Some have added cereals and chocolate chips. Instead, start with a plain version and add your own flavors with whole fruit. If you need a sweetener, a small amount of honey or agave syrup can add a great deal of flavor. Greek yogurt is one of my personal favorites!
  • Granola – this popular cereal choice can be very high in saturated fats and calories. Make your own granola and you can control the ingredients, adding more healthy choices. You can even mix the granola in with your plain yogurt for a delicious treat! (more…)

We Love Greek Yogurt

This week, we love Greek Yogurt. For breakfast, a mid-afternoon snack or even as a dessert, this creamy and super nutritious snack is one of our trusted go-to foods.

Greek yogurt has a tangier and richer texture than most other yogurts. Sorry Dannon and Yoplait, but when it comes to nutrition, Greek yogurt has you beat. With 15 to 20 grams of protein, 25% of your calcium needs, immune-boosting live bacteria and 120 to 150 calories per serving, it is no wonder that Greek yogurt has become a staple food for health devotees and nutrition connoisseurs.

Greek yogurt has a heaven-sent texture of being super rich and yet also light and fluffy at the same time.
