The F-Factor Diet

The American Dietetic Association has named March National Nutrition Month. But to help us think a bit more deeply about our eating habits, the ADA has a second message that coincides with the themed month: Nutrition From the Ground Up.

So if you’re wondering if that means eating more foods from nature, you’re right, and if you’re thinking that this message is a call to build a healthier diet, you’re also right.

One of the foundations of developing a healthy eating plan is consuming plenty of plant-based foods, or foods from the ground. And while fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are full of disease-fighting vitamins and minerals, they also share the common denominator of containing fiber.

We now know that most Americans don’t get enough of the 25 recommended grams of fiber a day, but rather than relying on the new line of processed foods that are added with synthetic fibers, which can cause gastrointestinal distress and may not offer the same health benefits as fiber in its natural form, we thought we would focus on a diet that is all about helping you eat more fiber: The F-Factor Diet.

Little did she, or we, know, that while she was passionately working on starting this company, she would gain back the 75 pounds she lost, plus ten. We’ve watched Kirstie’s weight fluctuations for years. Using Oprah as a stage for promoting her weight loss, and confessing her weight gain, Kirstie made yet another appearance today. This time, it was to promote her new show on A&E, Kirstie Alley’s Big Life premiering March 21, and her new company, Organic Liaison.

She says she’s been working with a team of scientists to create an organic weight loss plan and is now excited to share with all of us Organic Liaison. It’s a multi-layer membership and supplement program that supports the weight loss efforts of men and women, and is meant to “escort you into the world of organic weight loss,” says Kirstie in the site’s introductory video. The Safety and Dangers of HCG Diet Clinics

hcghCG therapy is a highly controversial practice for those who want to lose weight. While many have found success with shedding pounds by receiving hCG injections, the FDA has only authorized their use for infertility and reproductive issues.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone that supports the normal development of an egg in a woman’s ovary, during ovulation. When hCG is injected into the body, it literally tricks the body into thinking it’s pregnant, thereby mobilizing certain hormones and fat stores, using glycogen, fat, and protein in the process for fuel.

But the FDA has not approved the use of hCG for weight loss treatment, obesity therapy or determined that the use of hCG contributes to an individual’s loss of body fat.

How Mario Batali is Losing Weight

mario bataliThere is yet another story of a celebrity chef losing weight after seeing themselves in the media. Although 49-year-old Mario Batali does want to look better, it’s not all vanity. He also says he wants to have a longer life with his family. Portion control and some light exercise have helped him lose 45 pounds thus far. His goal is to get down to 200, from the 280 pounds he weighed before he started this journey.

So how is Batali doing it when it is his job to surround himself with wonderful food all day long? He has made statements about caloric balance that suggest that he understands that food is the body’s fuel primarily, even though it can be enjoyed. Despite common weight loss advice, Mario is not eating breakfast, but finding energy in the morning from espresso. Throughout the day, he says that he tries to eat salads and vegetables, only adding protein in the evening. He states that he also eats only half portions when eating at restaurants. (more…)
