This is the story of Ruby, a nearly 500 pound woman trying to completely overhaul her lifestyle in order to lose weight and save her life. Ruby has come up with a team to help her through this weight loss adventure. Her team consists of personal trainer Reese Brown, and weight loss physician Dr. Bradley (the founder of the Hourglass Weight loss and Fitness wellness program), Dr. Brewerton, a psychiatrist helping Ruby with the mental component for weight loss, her personal physician Dr. Corse, and finally her dietitian Helen Hussey. Ruby will run on the Style Network, where they have a great break down of every aspect of Ruby’s diet and exercise regimen, friends/social support system, her blog, bonus scenes from the show, and more. I will be providing weekly episode recaps for those interested in staying updated on Ruby’s progress.
On this week’s episode, Ruby gets a visit from an ex-boyfriend (Denny) that she loved dearly, but ultimately he left her because he couldn’t accept her physical appearance. There were many mixed feelings about Denny’s arrival. Ruby’s roommate and friend Jeff, and her other good friend Georgia, are very skeptical about Denny because they think he played a huge role in her gaining more weight once he left her six years ago. Denny swore that he was there to support Ruby and help her through this struggle, but ultimately faced her with the same ultimatum he gave her six years ago… lose the weight and I’ll marry you, but if you can’t then we can’t be together. This crushed Ruby six years ago, but today she is stronger and focused on herself and getting healthy for her, not for anyone else.
This entire episode focused on social support, which is so important in successful weight loss and maintenance. Ruby has surrounded herself with a great social system (Georgia, Jeff, her nephew Jim, and Georgia’s sons Ben and Zachary) and knew that having Denny in her life right now wasn’t the best thing for her… good for her! Realizing that the people you surround yourself with will help make or break your lifestyle change is huge, and I’m proud of Ruby for keeping the right people close to her.
If you watched this week’s episode what are your thoughts? Do you think she did the right thing? I welcome you to share your comments and/or questions.

Your right, look at last night at the Thanksgiving dinner...she could not stop tasting everything and she is very bossy. If I had met her I would not go out of my way to be come friends with her. She demands to much from her friends and does not give anything back. She acts like a spoiled brat. And as for her boyfriend , the only reason he is there is that he wants to be on television.
posted Apr 19th, 2010 1:22 pmI like watching the show and wish Ruby a lot of luck. I don't think her over eating has anything to do with her past that she cannot remember for if it is we all have that problem or we can use that as a excuse.
She needs to get a grip on her weakness and face it head on and control it. I'm also over weight of 100 lbs and I know that is what I need to do myself. No one ever said it was easy, but Ruby is doing a great job and does not need any excuses now to continue. Keep up the good work, get rid of Mr Macho and be very greatful for your roommate, nephew and Georgia. They are your real friends as they put up with your demands and expect nothing back from you but a big whineeeeee !!!

The sad thing about this is that Ruby has no strong 12 Step Program, really understands NOTHING about her disease of compulsive overeating. She THINKS that if she finds out "what happened", or "why" she eats, it will solve her overeating problem. This is ridiculous. She can ONLY for the rest of her life - whether she gets her answers or not - deal with her eating problem one day at a time. There is a 1-2 % cure rate. 98% will get thinner and then go back to top weight and gain even more. This disease is vicious, and is PROGRESSIVE. Ruby and all around her are deluded. SHE MUST get a 12 Step program and go to 4-5 meetings a week, follow the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous - just like addicts and compulsive overeaters do. The 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and the program for the food end of it, is her ONLY long term hope. Yes, she can go to goal weight but she will go right back up within 1-3 years without a food program based on the AA program.
posted Apr 5th, 2010 1:39 amAlso, everyone says she is so SWEET. Ruby is personable as long as she is the center of attention and gets her way. She is overbearing, takes "hostages" to her bidding and calls them her friends. Ruby, like all of us with and "ISM" (as in Alcohol-ism), have character defects. Ruby has plenty.
Non addictive people do not see Ruby as she really is. 12 Step Program people do. Ruby needs a program in the Overeaters Anonymous food program, (within the food programs based on AA) , it is called Grey Sheet. There the food is weighed and measured 3 xs per day. She has a sponsor and she does what she is told about the food and the steps of the program.
I am a compulsive overeater and have lost and gained 100's of pounds, because I LEAVE the 12 step programs (Grey Sheet), and take my will back about the food.
Ruby is in denial if she thinks she can control her weight once the show goes off the air and she is no longer being taken care of by an obesity specialist, a therapist, her friends, the Style Network following her success. When she has to go it alone, she will start gaining weight again. I hope and pray not but there is a place she can go. It is called the last house on the block - Grey Sheet. She can always get on line and look up Grey Sheet through the Overeaters Anonymous program. The Grey Sheet program is on the telepone - 100% free. And she can go to live meetings, too. All free.
God bless you Ruby. If the going ever gets too much, call Grey Sheeters Anonymous.
Best to you.
