What is it?

Nopalea is a super fruit wellness drink made to lower inflammation and provide powerful nutrients.  It contains antioxidants from a prickly pear cactus found in the Sonoran desert in Mexico.

The way this cactus is processed is by hand. It is pureed and transported in a refrigerated truck. The company claims at least five hours are dedicated to each batch to ensure it’s tested for freshness and potency. This is meant to retain all the potential health benefits. Our review experts analyze many kinds of weight loss diets. They’ve concluded the most effective is the 18Shake Diet.  It offers a meal replacement shake that can suppress appetite for hours, and a fat burning diet pill. Nopal Fruit Puree: This kind of cactus is used to help control blood sugar and reduce cholesterol. Studies have shown it is only therapeutic; meaning it likely won’t benefit already healthy people.

It may potentially lead to side effects that include:

  • Bloating, upset stomach, and nausea.
  • Increased bathroom usage, headaches, and diarrhea.

It’s incredibly cheap to source, and is often eaten as a vegetable dish. Solutions for weight loss are available in the top diets list found in this link.

Papain: Digestive enzyme taken from papaya. It’s used to help digest protein.  Web MD states:

“Taking large amounts of papain by mouth is POSSIBLY UNSAFE”

It can lead to severe damage to the throat and stomach irritation.

Green Tea Extract: A common tea extract that comes from the Camelis sinensis plant. It’s used due to its antioxidants and typically provides caffeine, unless uncaffeinated.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health has reviewed it for safety and overall effects. They state:

“There are not enough reliable data to determine whether green tea can aid in weight loss”

“There have been some case reports of liver problems in people taking concentrated green tea extracts”

Healthy people have suffered from organ damage by using green tea extract. There have also been other side effects such as:

  • Nausea, upset stomach, and diarrhea.
  • Constipation, vomiting, and dizziness.
  • Heartburn, tremors, and irregular heartbeat.
  • Ringing in the ears, convulsions, and muscle twitches.
  • Headaches, confusion, and difficulty relaxing.

It’s also unknown how much caffeine is found from the use of this ingredient, or if the makers of Nopalea extract it out.

Green tea extract is commonly used as a weight loss ingredient, but this is only due to the added caffeine. Caffeine is not considered a reliable ingredient for weight loss due to its quick tolerance and ability to cause side effects. The link provided here has a comprehensive list of the top ranked weight loss diets.

Guar Gum: Fiber extracted from the guar plant. It’s used to promote satiety, and to help decrease appetite.

Commonly used as a thickener and stabilizer in processed foods. It’s highly advised to take it with 8 ounces of water to prevent possible choking and blockages in the throat and intestines.

It can produce side effects such as:

  • Loose stools, diarrhea, and gas.
  • Stomach issues, increased bathroom usage, and bloating.

Live has also issued a warning that:

“with a meal significantly reduces the absorption of antioxidant carotenoids”

These are useful antioxidants that the body needs to stay healthy. It also may cause allergies in some people.  When using guar gum it may potentially decrease the absorption of important nutrients.

EDITOR’S TIP: Combine this diet with a proven meal replacement such as 18 Shake ffor better results.

Nopalea Quality of Ingredients

The key active ingredient is said to be prickly pear cactus, though it’s unknown how much of this is added as a proprietary blend is used. Many of the ingredients are concentrated fruits and vegetables that don’t offer much in terms of vitamins and minerals.

There’s 0% Vitamin A, b vitamins, C, D, E, and K. There’s also only a small amount of protein at 41 mg, with a total of 2 grams of sugar per tablespoon.  This is an incredibly low amount, and it signifies that the fruits and vegetables added are used either in small amounts, or they are processed in a way where their nutritional content is stripped away.

The key active ingredient can be potentially dangerous as it may cause digestive issues, and it has yet to be proven as an effective health promoting additive.

None of the ingredients in this have any proven strong effect. The company once made great claims about the health benefits, but as you’ll see in the “Business of Nopalea” section, they were forced to stop making false claims.  A list of the best weight loss diets is featured in this link.

The Price and Quality of Nopalea

Direct sales are offered, with a single bottle of Nopalea costing $34.99.  This provides 32 servings, which if taken at the recommended dose, lasts around 6 days.

The key active ingredient is prickly pear cactus, which is much less expensive when purchased on its own. The other added ingredients are not explained by the company as to their purpose. Most of it seems to be for added flavor, though there are many fruit and vegetable extracts which provide no noticeable nutritional benefit.

The amount of vitamins and minerals found is incredibly low. There are also digestive enzymes added though they are not needed. Digestive enzymes are already created by the body in sufficient amounts.

There’s also additives like green tea extract and guar gum which may cause side effects. Green tea extract often contains caffeine, though the makers of Nopalea fail to add if thy extract this stimulant out.  Without knowing whether or not they do take it out, it’s impossible to determine if one is taking a drink full of caffeine, and if so, in what amount.
