Denny’s Diet Disaster: Fried Cheese Melt

Neither mozzarella sticks nor grilled cheese sandwiches are particularly healthy or low calorie foods. But sicking the fried cheese into the fired sandwich means only one thing: diet disaster. The sandwich will be appearing on Denny’s $2 $4 $6 $8 value menu starting August 24th.

The restaurant chain announced that the Fried Cheese Melt will cost $4.00, but has not released its caloric content. Here’s our best estimate, with data provided by Denny‘s:

  • 750 calories for an 8-ounce serving of Denny’s mozzarella sticks, without condiments (Denny’s does not disclose how many pieces they consider a serving)
  • 650 calories in Denny’s three cheese melt
  • Totals 1,400 calories

The meal will also come with a serving of fries, and a serving of marinara sauce. The french fries have 425 calories per 5-ounce serving, and the average 1/2 cup of marinara sauce has 93 calories.

Our estimated calorie count for the meal is 1,918 calories. That’s about as many calories as one should eat per day. It’s not hard to imagine why America has an obesity problem when restaurants serve things like this an appropriate meal.

I love cheese any way I can get it and so when I ended up at Denny's for lunch today I tried this sandwich out of curiosity. Disgusting is the only word that can describe it. The melted cheese they use on the sandwich takes like velveeta and the breading on the mozzarella sticks was dry and gross. It didn't go together very well with the bread on the sandwich. It was a gross experience just chewing it. I only ate half of the sandwich, but even that much was a fight to get down.

I love cheese, and, this is definitely a guilty pleasure. Most people know that eating out is not good for the waist line. But for an every now and then treat, this is very suitable!

While I admit this thing is an absurd crime against humanity (albeit a delicious one), your estimate is a bit off. For one, the average serving of Denny's Mozzerella Sticks is 8 sticks - while this sandwhich is clearly 4. So go ahead and shave off 375 calories right there. Also considering this is a value meal, expect a lower-than-average ammount of fries. Finally, who cleans out the entire cup of marinara?

While this is far from diet food, your 1900 calorie projection is an overstatement - around 1200 is more realistic.

It is like the fast food restaurants are in an arms race for the most unhealthy meal!

How can Denny executives face themselves in the mirror? If they're fit themselves, then they're foisting garbage on the naive. If they're as fat as the people who eat this will be, they're helping ruin Americans. Yecch!!
