HCG Diet: Look Elsewhere for Weight Loss

You won’t see me promoting quick fixes or fad diets anytime soon. But every once in awhile something comes along that seems so dangerous I have to call it out. That’s why I’m going to help reveal the truth behind the HCG diet.hcg injections

What it is: HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone produced during pregnancy by the cells that form the placenta. This hormone is detected in the blood around 11 days after conception; it is detected in the urine around 12-14 days after conception. While it is most commonly associated with pregnancy, it is present in both genders.

What it does in the body: HCG signals the hypothalamus (area of the brain that affects metabolism) to mobilize fat stores. In pregnancy, this helps the body bring nutrients into the placenta, fueling the fetus with the energy to grow.

The weight loss claim: The HCG diet (using daily hcg injections) will help you lose 1-3 pounds per day.  The HCG-diet combines the daily injections with a very low-calorie diet (500 calories per day).

500-calories per day is severely restrictive! In fact, it is not enough calories to support normal brain function. Your body will compensate by using stores of glycogen, protein (muscle) and some fat, which lowers your resting metabolism. Before you can lose true weight, you will be so irritable, lightheaded, and cranky that you’ll reach for whatever food you can get your hands on and have a field day.

Scientific evidence: There is no scientific evidence supporting HCG injections as a weight loss strategy. In addition, these injections have not been approved by the FDA for use in weight loss. In fact, since 1975 the FDA has required all marketing and advertising of HCG to state the following: “HCG has not been demonstrated to be effective adjunctive therapy in the treatment of obesity. There is no substantial evidence that it increases weight loss beyond that resulting from caloric restriction, that it causes a more attractive or ‘normal’ distribution of fat, or that it decreases the hunger and discomfort associated with calorie-restricted diets.”

“HCG is a hormone extracted from urine of pregnant women. It is approved by FDA for treatment of certain problems of the male reproductive system and in stimulating ovulation in women who have had difficulty becoming pregnant. No evidence has been presented, however, to substantiate claims for HCG as a weight-loss aid.” via the FDAno symbol

HCG ban: The hormone was recently added to the list of “banned substances” in Major League Baseball, as it was becoming increasingly popular among steroid users. Athletes turned to this, among other “performance enhancing drugs” because it “mitigates the side effects of ending a cycle of steroids.”

Negative side effects: The common side effects include headaches, mood swings, depression, blood clots, confusion, and dizziness. Some women also develop a condition called Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS); symptoms of this include pelvic pain, swelling of the hands and legs, stomach pain, weight gain, shortness of breath, diarrhea, vomiting/nausea, and/or urinating less than normal.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Weight loss is hard work and it won’t come in a potion, pill, or injection. The most “dangerous” thing you should be doing to your body is trying a new exercise that intimidates you like rock climbing or completing a marathon.

Ann, it takes a 3500 calorie deficit to loose one pound. And the first 5-7 pounds give or take are water... but people I know are loosing a pound or more a day and a few are cheating as well, eating other foods including bread and loosing. If you are drinking a gallon of water per day and the first 500 calorie day you drop 4 pounds that is not because of a low calorie diet. posted Today 1:19 am Profile send message  Message

At this point it's not about a size 8, it's about my deterioting health from binging I look forward to being in community here and with anyone else who wants to chat and check in. This diet is better than I thought!! I took a break after a year, and now that I am doing again, I have even better results than before!! They say you can lose a pound a day, but in reality, I am losing 3 pounds a day!!! AND my blood pressure is down, ( I suffer from high blood pressure, which is why I need to lose the weight) I agree with the poster with regards to the government its American Citizens. America is all about "show me the money" and obesity is big business. Of course they hate the cure!! posted Yesterday 11:56 am

I purchased my HCG drops from hcglookgreat.com and started the program. After losing 24 pounds in a month I am now on the maintenance program. I have stuck with the diet and look better than I did 20 years ago. I recommend this to anyone who wants to lose weight and has the drive to stick with it. Knowing that you could be 20-30 pounds thinner in 30 days was all the motivation I needed and just in time for me to get into my summer clothes and not feel ashamed. posted Mar 19th, 2010 11:43 pm

Having done a whole heck of a lot of research on hGC as I plan to do the diet in the coming week I found out a few facts that some are not giving and SHOULD be addressed.

Did you know that you CAN get hepatitis to even HIV from hGC use IF it comes from an unregulated company outside the United States, especially if the hGC is in vials made to be injected.

Some of the online pharmacies which are selling hCG is derived from animals! (Cats & Rats) and comes from from China and India..

Only hCG that comes from the United States is certified HIV free.

So people, PLEASE only buy from a company in the United States. posted Mar 19th, 2010 10:35 pm

I started the program 3/14/10. i have lost 7.2lbs. The first day I had a slight headache. I haven't had once since and i feel great. I am during the sublingual. I feel that I am getting enough food and haven't been hungry, tired or dizzy. I will stay on it until I loss the weight. I know it's not a quick fix but I think it helps. I feel great. Anyone that whats to do it research it and read pounds and inches. The hardest thing to me is not being able to use regular products. posted Mar 19th, 2010 9:56 pm

ok so. one person said they started the drops and was still doing yoga and pilates everyday! you are not supposed to do extra exercise while on that part of the diet. you gained weight because you were starving. you burned that 500 cal each time you exercised. you are only supposed to exercise while on the maintenance end of it.

i love the insanity workout and the p90x. you will lose weight and get ripped if you follow diet and do the videos the way they say. BUT if you are super heavy then the hormone could be a good way to go to get to a healthier wieghtto do a heavy workout routine.

i have family members that have done it. they weighed in over 250. one of them has hiv and because of her meds for that she carries extra fat even though she is VERY active and healthy otherwise. they have all done so much better. none of them have been super bad eaters or lazy, they just carry extra weight. i am doing p90x since i just had a baby and can't use hormones or meds and i only need to lose about 10-15 pounds. my family is too over weight and i want to see them healthy. i agree on the downside on not really knowing the longterm effects. but the longterm effects of being 100 lbs overweight is pretty bad too. just do your research and ask your doc for advice and make sure you do a blood draw to make sure you are healthy. many docs actually reccomend the diet and will work with you on it.

To all the people that are fixating on "negative side effects", the list for side effects of obesidy is longer and more dangerous. So pick your poison.

I am an RN in a cardiovascular ICU, I see bad things happen to healthy people...Aorta rupture on 40 yr old runner, heart attack 32 yr old, lung cancer 50 yr old health nut, no smoke exposure.

And I definately am not the poster child for HCG. I must admit I have not had 100% self control, my love affair for chocolate is too strong. But fat free choc pudding and fudge pops saved me. I felt great all but the first day. Will be starting again soon, took time off in between to do strengthening. posted Mar 13th, 2010 6:12 pm

I just started the diet portion today and I AM MISERABLE. I cannot focus on anything. I am exhausted, starving, moody and have a headache. I currently am dizzy and having trouble focusing and was thinking about making a trip to the ER! That's good nobody else seems to have these problems, but I sure do! :( I paid a lot of money for this program and I don't think I will be able to do it. I am a nurse and have seen several of the surgeons I work with on thie program and they have had great results. I guess I am one of the unfortunate ones. Best of luck to everyone else, though! :) posted Mar 12th, 2010 7:50 pm

I did the HCG diet a few months ago and lost 35 lbs. in 28 days! I was skeptical at first, but saw co-workers on the diet losing weight, so I decided to give it a try. I admit it was difficult, more from a psychological standpoint then physical, but being able to get on the scale each morning and see results kept me motivated! Not only did I lose the weight, but it reset my metabolism and I have kept the weight off now for over 4 months eating most foods I enjoy, but being more moderate. This diet isn’t for everyone, you must be committed to losing weight and disciplined or it won’t work. Learn more from the site I went to get started:

Bailion - Diet and exercise does not work for everyone. And yes, I did try working out harder than you probably have in your whole life. I went to a three month camp one summer where we probably ran 5 miles a day, did at least 400 push ups, 1000 sit ups, and various other things. We were working out from the time we got up from the time we went to bed 12 hours later. In three months, I lost five pounds. hmmmmm.... posted Mar 9th, 2010 8:16 am

Is there a good place to get reliable info on the net? when one Googles it there is so much Cr*** that comes up it is hard to wade through. I have tried to find out when this first came out to see how long people have been using it and it is confusing. Today is my 8th day and I'm happy I decided to give it a try. I did read several pamphlets, articles and spoke to people regarding this HCG hormone diet. These people have been very respectable and trustworthy. I also tried many things like Weight Watchers, Phen Phen and ear staples to loose weight. I was 125lbs in high school then after 3 children 2 divorces and 20 years of yo yo dieting and exercise weighed a whopping 200 lbs at 5'3" tall. Just in the 8 days I've dropped 1 pant size and several inches all over my bod. Yes the 500 Cal per day is hard but as we all say, once you're motivated and start the HCG is works. I'm not tired, starving, moody or restless. I've also had a check up and I'm doing great. Life is full of risks and being overweight with severe health problems in my future. I choose to change today. I'm learning to eat healthier by using the HCG, keeping my journal and seeing the results motivates me to stay away from the sweets and processed foods. Good luck to everyone and I totally feel better since I started. My knees don't even hurt anymore! posted Mar 4th, 2010 1:59 pm

Wow, look at all the fad diet junkies. First Scientist haven't fully looked into the long term effects from this diet. So everyone doing it is ok now, but maybe in five years they might not be doing so well. Also anytime bringing false hormones into the body is not a good idea. What is so hard with working the weight off the right way. If you are one of those people saying I have tried diet and exercise and it doesn't work. Then maybe you should try harder. I currently weight train and do the insanity workout that has been advertised on TV and it is giving me wonderful results. Not only will you loose weight you will gain muscle increasing your metabolism. Also you will gain stamina something that comes in very handy if you are a "on the go" person like myself. If you want to be true to yourself look deep inside, drop the "suppose to get skinny" fast diets and do it the right way. You wont be disappointed, i'm not. posted Mar 4th, 2010 1:53 pm

JChamp- As long as you didn't feel starved the first few days after the VLCD, I'm sure you'll be fine. It sounds like you've already had great success! In case you haven't done so already, I would highly suggest you read the original protocol outlined in Pounds and Inches. There is a section in there that addresses the loading days. Other than fatigue and hunger, I don't know if there are any other adverse reactions listed, but you should check it out just in case. posted Mar 4th, 2010 1:49 pm

I have just recently started the HCG diet - 4th day of injections. Unfortunately, because I had already been "dieting," I did not do the two load days - as I was afraid that if I ate a ton of food, I would again suffer trying to get those cravings out. I know now, I was wrong.

The first day I lost 5 lbs and the last 2 days I have only lost about .6 ounces total. So technically, I am down 5.6 lbs in three days. I'm thinking this is okay, but want to make sure, since weight loss has been pretty low the last two days, that I didn't mess up by not loading and will pay for it for the rest of the days?

Any advice or previous experience appreciated. posted Mar 4th, 2010 11:46 am

I, like many others who have commented, have had GREAT success with the hcg diet. I am on day 12 and have lost 18.2lbs. No side effects, I am NOT huger in fact, I have to MAKE myself eat. I am not weak, I work and go to school full time and neither have suffered. I am also a single mom of a VERY active 1 year old. I am not lazy, I have a hormonal disorder (pcos) which makes it hard for me to lose weight so simply eating less and exercising does not work for ME. I look forward to continuing this diet until I reach my target weight. And for those who think we are lazy and looking for the easy way out, this diet is FAR from easy. IAnd to the nay sayers unless you have tried the protocol, you really have nothing to say about it other then speculation. Sure, you are entitled to your opinion but opinions are like yesterdays, everybody has one. Hcg works. posted Mar 3rd, 2010 11:52 pm

The problem with the naysayers is they don't understand that every BODY is different. They want to brand every overweight American as lazy and a junk food junky and think that EVERYONE can lose weight with diet and exercise.

I grew up with two siblings. I ate what they ate. I played year round sports from the time I was 5 years old. I was the only child out of the 3 kids that carried extra weight, starting as an adolescent. My body clearly responded differently to diet and exercise. Even with diets and exercise as an adult, my weight is very stubborn and I don't lose at the rates that my trainers and doctors expect. My thyroid is fine. My insulin levels are fine. I work out and play sports regularly yet remain overweight. Even if I lost weight solely by diet and exercise, the amount of daily good diet and exercise would be much higher than a normal person, just to maintain.

That being said, HCG worked for me. I didn't have side effects. I didn't gain weight back. I lost 30 pounds in 6 weeks. And it's just gone. That's it. My body didn't freak out. My ovaries are still normal. I didn't starve. I didn't binge eat because I was so deliriously hungry. I wasn't moody. I didn't end the diet and start eating ice cream and chocolate all day long. I learned lessons on food and proportions and when my body feels healthy.

For those that are interested, do your research. It is worth it to know what you're doing. If you want to do HCG for a quick fix and don't plan on changing any of your bad habits- DON'T DO IT. This diet depends on your mental conviction to change your life, not just work to fit into a pair of pants. If you aren't mentally prepared to change the way you look at food, you will fail at this diet. Save your money and join a gym. posted Mar 2nd, 2010 2:18 pm

Every diet you look in to will come with many rumors and pros and cons. I did a great deal of research before I decided to use the hcg injections to loose weight. I have several friends that have used the injections to loose weight and have been sucessful in keeping it off for an extended period of time. I have lost 40lbs. on my first round of the injections and have begun stabilization just today. About ten years ago I lost about 60lbs under a physicians care taking Phentermine and 800 calories a day. I agree with the side effects listed for the extremely low calorie diet. At 800 calories a day I was light headed and breathless and irritable also the medication reved up my resting heart rate to 90-100 bpm, and it stayed there for nearly two years even after I had stopped taking the medication. When my body became immune to the Phentermine I immediately gained back the weight I lost. I felt like a failure. I have had none of the side effects (lightheadedness, irritibility...) this time with the hcg. I have been active and energized and calm. I have even walked on the treadmill for 15-20 min. a day 3 days a week with no adverse effects. I object to the inference that all fat people are lazy and over indulgent, spending their days on the sofa. I am an active mother of five and help my husband run our 4000 acre farm. Obviously I do have issues with food and nutrition which the low fat low carb menu on the hcg protocol has helped me to address. I really am learning to look at food differently. All diets will fail people who are not prepared to make real life changes to their diet and behavior! The risks of someone being morbidly obese are too dangerous to ignore them and poo poo a system that has helped people for decades. Everyone who considers this route absolutely must arm themselves with as much information as possible before they begin. Ignorance can be lethal. But fear and bias can be lethal aswell. posted Feb 27th, 2010 11:53 pm Profile send message  Message

I think the point of this article is that you are putting these hormones in your body that are basically elevated only when a female is pregnant. It is NOT saying it does NOT work - it DOES work. However, so did Fen Phen, and most people should know by now the major heart valve defects it caused in many people years down the road after using the product. I heard that those who had testified in the Fen Phen case who had taken the product actually admitted that they would take it again "in a heartbeat" if it was available even though they knew the outcome of heart defects was real due to having the heart defect themselves! (This is an incredibly reliable source close to the case.)

What I find sad is that people are willing to take the easier way out at the risk of other potentially serious medical problems - all in the name of "skinny". It took a while for Fen Phen to rear its ugly head, so why do people think HCG won't have the same outcome?

Yes, I actually started the HCG drops. For some reason, I decided to not read for myself the pros and cons, even though I work in the medical field. I am tired of the 25 lbs I have put on in the past near 3 years, but apparently not tired enough to actually get up off the sofa, exercise and cut out my beloved Java Chip Frappuccinos. I wanted the quick fix - and I'm sure this is it. I can tell in the week I have tried the product that it does something "good" for the weight issue, but my husband found out I was doing this and said I'm a fool if I keep doing it without doing my homework on the product. He was right, and it's a no-brainer to do the homework before trying any product.

Well, I did the homework... Unless a doctor tells me that for medical reasons I need HCG injections/supplements to help me get pregnant or maintain a pregnancy, I'm not using it anymore. There isn't enough research on this, and while the FDA is not perfect, until I hear definitively there are no negative issues with taking this hormone, I will "simply" (not) do the WORK by exercising and eating right.

For those who said that it was taken away from the baseball world for a reason - meaning it signifies that "it must work" type of thing - I'm sorry, but you are all missing the point. It DOES work, just like steroids work. Steroids are banned because they give athletes an unfair, unnatural advantage. Steroids - hormones - given at unnatural doses, do DAMAGE TO THE BODY that far outweigh the glamour of having big muscles.

Trust me, it was easy for me to fall into the "no work/fast results" fantasy island. I'm just writing to say that most HCG users are missing the point of this article - it DOES WORK, it just isn't safe. The idea of adding a hormone into my body that I'm not deficient in just so that I can lose the "lazy weight" I've put on, well, it's crazy and dumb.

Attorneys I'm sure are chomping at the bit for the news of the negative medical defects this one is going to cause... Let's just put down the cheeseburger and other junk, and pay the price for how we got our bodies in this condition in the first place. posted Feb 26th, 2010 10:10 pm

To Channel: You need to read Pounds and Inches. It outlines what you should eat.
Here's a quick list:
Breakfast- coffee or tea (no creamer or sweeteners, except Stevia)
Lunch- 1 fruit (orange, 6 strawberries, half a grapefruit, or an apple), 1 vegetable (cucumbers, asparagus, tomato), 1 melba toast, and 3.5 ounces of chicken breast, 95% lean (or leaner, if possible) ground beef, bison, or shrimp.
Dinner- Repeat the same options for lunch (Just make sure you don't eat the same things- i.e. Don't have an apple for both lunch and dinner- You need to vary them).

Keep in mind that this is not a complete list. It's important you read Pounds and Inches. Just Google it :) posted Feb 25th, 2010 12:46 am

Read the truth. This diet can kill you. It is the #1 yo-yo diet. Your brain can not function properly og 500 calories per day. This is why people that use hcg are retarded.

Many people, when hearing of a “new magic-bullet,” don’t want to hear anything other than how it can help them and where they can obtain their new-found cure or miracle. The emotional turmoil of struggling with weight-issues blinds many people to the obvious fallacies propagated by those selling the new cure, as well as the many risks associated with invasive attempts to alter their appearance. If you want to take a risk with a new diet remedy, that’s your decision; but there are at least two-things you should know about hCG first: For starters, it’s not new; and, it’s never been conclusively shown or proven to cause or increase weight-loss – not even by the guy who suggested this “new” method of dieting over 50-years ago.

In 1954, A.T.W. Simeons, a British physician, introduced this new method of dieting in which a reduced-calorie diet was coupled with injections of a pregnancy hormone – hCG. Simeons himself said that patients would not lose more weight with hCG than without it; he simply indicated that the hCG could help dieters sustain the diet and possibly cause the weight-loss to target specific areas (e.g. hips, belly, and thighs). In studies conducted since the introduction of this approach, all weight-loss has been attributed to the 500-kCal/day diet; and no difference in weight-loss or body proportion has been evident between those using hCG and those not using hCG. Thus, hCG has been repeatedly shown to be ineffective for increasing weight-loss and is “largely rejected,” by authors of these studies, for administration for weight-loss. The bottom-line, according to medical experts, is that hCG should not be used for weight-loss.

Now for the really good news – if you use hCG, your buoyed hopes and emotions may make the 500-kCal/day diet easier to tolerate. In fact, with hCG or placebo, you are sure to lose weight. But what’s the point? We all know that diets simply don’t work; and as soon as you stop starving yourself, your body will replace what it’s lost with a vengeance. In other words, your body will regain the lost weight and add even more weight to provide a buffer should you decide to starve yourself again. We’ve all seen this “rebound” phenomenon time and time again. A 500-kCal/day diet is difficult for a reason; the hCG – in some cases – simply makes it a little easier to do something that you shouldn’t do – something you know doesn’t really have lasting positive effects and something that will probably backfire anyway. And at what cost are we continuing to trick and manipulate our bodies?

Here’s a list of some of the possible negative effects of hCG:

¦Ovarian Hyper-stimulation Syndrome (OHSS) – which is a life-threatening condition
¦Arterial Thromboembolism - another potentially life-threatening condition
¦Blood clots
¦Risk of multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, quadruplets, etc.)
¦Abnormal enlargement of breasts in men (gynaecomastia)
¦Over stimulation of the ovaries causing production of many ova (eggs) in women
¦Acne
¦Tiredness
¦Changes in mood
¦Irritation in area of use
¦Excessive fluid retention in the body tissues, resulting in swelling (edema)
¦Hair loss
¦Prostate hypertrophy
If hCG didn’t work and had no negative effects, then there would be no big deal; you could use it for whatever placebo value it may offer without worry or risk. But hCG does have very real potential negative effects – some of which could be life-threatening. Besides the fact that there is a huge black-market for hCG, and there’s a very large risk of getting a “substandard,” or “impure” product from an unknown source or manufacturer; there are very real health risks associated with this particular hormone. Even if you get it from your doctor, you still only know the source of the prescription – not the drug itself. And, depending on what type of hCG you use, and how you use it, the chances of experiencing one of the negative effects (which obviously range in severity) vary from 30% to an insane 45%. That’s like tossing a coin with your health knowing that you’ll either win and get no real, lasting benefit, or lose and possibly suffer greatly – or maybe even develop a life-threatening condition for the chance to lose some weight by starving yourself. Some people have been lucky with hCG; but some haven’t — and long-term studies have proven very disappointing for those hoping for a “permanent” cure. If you decide to toss this particular coin – good luck.

First, I have been in the health and fitness industry for over 24 years as a fitness instructor. Second, I am a journalist, third and to the point, I used HCG with phenomenal success!

The long and short of it is I have always been strong fit and athletic, but after having a child in my 40s while in college I found I could not lose 5 lbs let alone 25.

I was skeptical about HCG because I know the body's metabolism slows down when calories are severely restricted. This is the body's protection against starvation when food is scare. However, understanding the role of HCG and having had a child two years before it made sense that the body wouldn't believe it was being "starved" due to it tapping into the fat stores.

That being said, and having seen my friend's amazing success I chose to do it. I didn't do much research, despite the fact I am a journalist and ALWAYS research. Seeing was believing in this case and I was desperate.

To that end, I was a bit hungry in the beginning but it tapered off. I continued my workouts but paid attention to days when I felt less energetic. I did, however, find that most of the time I was stronger than I had ever been.

I chose the sublingual drops. I lost a total of 40 lbs in two months, have gone from a size 12 to a size 2, and have an average of 13% body fat. Not trying to be an obnoxious jackass, but this is for the naysayers: I am ripped with a 6-pack where I once had a small keg.

It has been almost a year and I follow the maintenance protocol of weighing EVERY day, eating a steak and tomato when I'm up more than 2 lbs.

if it doesn't work, then why are so many people here trying it and why is it be banned as a substance for athletes? posted Feb 21st, 2010 6:10 am

I know about a dozen people working with a local naturopath (my[self included) who have lost significant amounts of weight- fat not muscle.

When you just do a starvation diet you lose muscle mass not fat. With HCG you lose fat not muscle. The fact (may or may not be true) that major league baseball banned it only speaks to its effectiveness. If it didn't do anything why would they bother? posted Feb 21st, 2010 12:47 am

I just started this HCG diet, and my doctor gave me vitamins to go along with the shot. Ok, I have sick for the last two mornings and I am so hungry. So I am going to continue with the shots but not the vitamins. I am currently 236 and my goal is 160, I am having problems on what to eat. Any suggestions, I have just been eating salads with fat free dressing and water. I am really trying to stick with this diet but it going to be a long journey. posted Feb 19th, 2010 1:45 pm

Good article. Let me just say that I tried the hcg drops. After 6 days of feeling terrible, dizzy and being strict on this 500 calorie diet while still doing pilates and yoga - I gained 3 pounds. Now 3 pounds might not sound like much weight to gain, but when you are starving it was unbelievable!! I stopped this extreme crazy diet at that point and it took me two weeks of 1,200 calorie dieting to lose that 3 pounds that I gained on this nutty hcg diet!! It works for some people...but it didn't work for me! posted Feb 19th, 2010 12:37 pm

My doctor is starting me on the diet Saturday. Its costing me $250 for the shots and weekly doctor visits.

Im looking to drop "the last" 10-15lbs so to speak. Im not looking for a quick fix to loose weight either.

Im relatively fit, 150lbs, size 8, I excersise 5x a week, spin, yoga, treadmill, weighs w/ a personal trainer, ect. Im a vegetrian and eat very healthy to begin with, soy, veggies, whooe grains etc. I still cant loose the 10-15lbs I want. So for people here to say diet and excersise simply always works, I agree in part and disagree in part.

Eating right and excerising is important for your health, not just to loose weight. If all it took to be a size 4-6 (my goal) was eating right and excersising, I would be there already. Of course if I wasnt already active and healthy, I wouldnt be a size 8, Id be a 14,16, ect.....

So eating right and excersing got me to a good place...im hoping this diet will get me to a GREAT place.

If this was something I ordered online, I would be skeptical..but my doctor is recomending it and supervising me and I have to trust him more than the people who want to make money off my gym fees, diets, etc.

I will come back and let you all know how it goes. posted Feb 15th, 2010 9:41 pm

He is very interested in getting me started to lose the 50lbs that my thyroid condition helped me gain. I am breastfeeding my 9 month old son though. I recently completed the maintenance phase of my 2nd round of the hcg diet. I lost about 40 lbs and feel like I have been given a 2nd chance in life. I now have learned to read labels, avoid certain chemicals and try to eat good clean healthy food I prepare at home. This has been a life changing experience for the better. I am 58 years old and look and feel great. I hope to see my new Grandbabies grow up and to be able to keep up and play with them. I no longer get out of breath hurrying in from the parking lot to clock in on my job. I am hypothyroid and just could not lose weight. My husband just lost 26 lbs. and my sister lost about 40 on the same program. I did not experience any problems. I am glad I was able to find out about this program, because it has made me conscious of living a much healthier lifestyle. I weigh myself every morning. I will never EVER let myself return to the old ways that contributed to making me overweight. Dr. Simeone was a genius and I thank God he was able to share his discovery. We used the sublingual hcg. We are very motivated and pleased with the positive experience involved in our weight loss success. I have given up soda pop and products containing high fructose corn syrup which is in almost everything. Now that I have lost the weight, I also plan to implement exercise to my lifestyle. posted Feb 13th, 2010 12:55 pm

I started HCG injections on jan 11. as of this morning Feb. 11 I have lost 45.2 lbs. I started at 277.6 and this morning was 232.4. I follow Dr. Simeoms protocol and do not vary from it at all. My wife ordered the HCG online, I read Dr.Simeons study, and just started it myself. no doctors involved. It only cost me $16.00 for the 40 day supply of HCG. I am very pleased with the results, and am not hungry. posted Feb 11th, 2010 11:22 pm

Before I started taking HCG, I did my research; read medical reasons why HCG makes you lose weight and talked to people who actually tried it with success. I talked with my doctor to discuss HCG and if it was ok to try it.

She agreed AFTER she did a slew of tests to make sure I was in shape to do so. She gave me the go.

Starting at 269lbs, I lost 17lbs in 13 days. I don't feel tired or hungry and my energy is through the roof! I am doing Bikram and when it gets warmer I'll be walking up to 3 miles a day. I'm NEVER hungry, I don't get irritable and I sleep like a baby.

I'm taking the injections, however, I think on the next round, I'll be taking the drops which, I hear, are just as effective. posted Feb 11th, 2010 7:05 am

I thought I'd follow-up.... I wrote back on Jan 29th about the diet... I'm on the 18th day and have finished my first bottle of HCG and will be stopping now. I started at 229.7 and weight in at 207.7 this morning. I will stay on the 500 cal diet for 3 more days as the HCG is makes its way out of my system .

22 pounds this fast is crazy, but wow... big difference... I didn't need to diet... I'm in pretty good shape, just had some tummy fat I wanted to get rid of before hitting the gym again... so this is great... my waist never looked better... i survived the diet with realative ease... no side effects....

I did notice my bowel movements were reduced I'm sure due to the reduction in food intake, but I definately benefited from the HCG trigger the body to burn the fat stores. I will be 40 this year and I'm excited about hitting the gym and keeping my new weight.

I'm sure i would be like all the others who attack the diet with no first hand knowledge. But with results my friends have had, and I have now, I can tell you first hand it works. It's not the end all... but it is a great start to proper eating and excercise.

I guess what bugs me is people who don't know, and articles like this, that detract people from doing it... If it works for them, great, and hopefully they will be on the road to healthy eating....

I use to drink alot of soda each day, snack all day, ice cream each night... and I depended on my metabolism to take care of the rest... I won't be going back into the rut and I will enjoy my new wieght... dont ridicule those who have had success... applaud them for it. posted Feb 10th, 2010 6:31 pm

I appreciated this article. First, I will say that I have not tried the HGC diet. Second, I lost 110 pounds of weight and I have kept it off for 7 years. The way I did it was simple. I changed my lifestyle to include healthy eating like that recommended by the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. It took me over a year to lose this much weight. I also introduced a fitness routine...starting out very slowly and then working my way up to a more aggressive routine.

I, like most people, tried fad diets in the past and I ALWAYS gained the weight back. Nothing will work long-term if you aren't willing to make a serious lifestyle change. 500 calories a day is not sufficient and while you may not be hungry after a few days of eating this inadequate amount of food, if you have ever starved yourself...you know that this is a normal feeling after a few days of starvation.

I have many friends who tried diets like the Atkins diet, which is extremely unhealthy...and now, due to using this diet over a very long period, are suffering many consequences. I just hope that everyone who needs to diet will take very serious the long term side effects of any diet they choose. Read more materials on the diet, especially more than the information contained on the company's website. Do your research...search the American Journal of Medicine, etc. This is a very serious issue and one that should not be taken lightly. Your health, especially long-term, depends on it. posted Feb 7th, 2010 8:11 pm

My wife and I have been on HCG since last October. I was 410 lbs when I started and am 314 lbs today. She has lost 50 over this same time period.

We initially were going to do a 40 day run and evaluate; our Dr said keep going until it stops working and we have.

I understand there are risks with any action, however we haven't seen side effects after 4+ months of injections.

As for the idea that it's just the low-cal thing that is causing the weight loss... humbug. If I tried a 500 calorie diet on my own without this daily injection, I would have gone insane with cravings, it wouldn't have lasted even if the hunger pangs finally ebbed a little - I would have been irritable and looked like death, esp at my size to start. But the reality is that I am not only rarely hungry but also look and feel great - visibly noticeable to people who know me. How would that be possible on a starvation diet alone? I'm not saying everything the HCG practitioners claim is 100% true, I don't know brain chemistry nor will anyone I doubt truly connect all the dots on obesity. I just know my choice to stay fat or yoyo within 20-30 lbs on other diets that I couldn't last for more than a month or two on was a path to early death. I'm 41 and I needed to do this asap.

Last thought from me, I do not consider myself a success yet. If I can maintain my new weight for years, then I'll relax. The strict diet program, as others here have mentioned, does force you to reevaluate food and recategorize choices, e.g. fast food or dessert should be occasional not regular/I'm-bored/I'm-hungry-feed-me-now options.

I still do not recommend any diet or program, but so many people have seen my huge loss and demanded to know what did it. I point them to my local doctor who prescribed it to me and let them discuss. It's natural and rational to be concerned about side effects - discuss with a Dr. who has experience with this program.

Last thought, I would hazard a guess that most HCG naysayers who say "just eat less/better and exercise, there are no shortcuts" are individuals who have struggled with serious obesity. It so easy and condescending to armchair-quarterback the matter. Yet I agree that maintaining proper weight requires vigilant monitoring (e.g. the scale goes with you even on vacation) and permanent changes in eating and exercise decisions. But getting the weight off sometimes requires desperate measures. posted Feb 2nd, 2010 3:08 pm

I am a 54 y/o provessional, male. I read about the protocol 2 or 3 years ago in the Trudeau book. Sounded great until I got to the injection point.
I am 5'9" and on Jan. 8 I weighed 258 lbs. The heaviest I ever weighed. I saw an advertisement for oral hcg and decided to try it. I am a wine collector and my bigest concern was the desire to drink wine and the headaches and fatigue. I have done this for 23 days and have lost 30 lbs. I have been buying wine w/o the urge to taste. No loss of energy, if anything I have more. I used to come home from work and eat dinner and hit the couch. Now I'm bored looking for more things to do.
My wife is doing it too and while it is harder for women to loose weight she is down 15 lbs in 18 days. posted Feb 1st, 2010 1:49 pm

Rather one sided article... you can find plenty of published material on each side of any story, and I too don't take the FDA seriously... it's a business... it's not a service to the public.

I'm 6'1, 229lbs... and ready to turn 40. I've run around 220 the last 10 years... I don't look 220, I'm fairly muscular and active (3 seasons of softball a year, gym, etc)...

My eating habits are all across the board. I'm a VP for a consulting firm, though I don't travel as much, I did fly close to a million miles over the last 10 years... between business meals, vegas buffets, and late nights working at the computer snacking... I should be 300 lbs :) thank you lord for good genes.

I'm not a diet fad guy... but this summer a friend of mine did the injections, 2 courses (with the break in between) and lost 32lbs the first cycle and another 20 the second... he looks great... he was 5'6" 260+ lbs... a bowling ball with ears... Now he has the energy to bike, eats right and exersices... it was a jump start for him... and he continues it with good diet and excercise... hats of to him... sad to read about the folks that did it, and then are eating poorly afterwards.

I'm not into shots... so I wasn't interested... I did mention it to a member of my softball team, how was about 265, I'm not sure how tall... but he's not 5'6. He's my conspiracy thearist... won't let his wife eat stuff or drink stuff because of the bad things in it... I mentioned it and he said he'd heard of it, read up on it... but never met anyone... i mention my friend, who goes to the same church... and he was convinced, though had the same issue with shots as I.

He found the oral version... went on a session and lost 30+ lbs... I spoke to him 6 days ago and he was at 229 and going to start a second round in a few weeks.

So I decided to give it a try... I'm not fat... but I could lose some to get healthier... my goal is to lose 20-30 lbs, and then hit the gym and gain 10 back...

Did I mention I like to eat... also I bake amazing cookies... and love to cook.... It's day 6 for me... I was 229.7lbs on that first day and I'm at 220.2lbs today.... I am surprised I'm not hungry... I mean, there is minor thoughts, but not when I miss a meal normally...

I know there are different verions of this... I drink as much coffee and black/green tea as I want and use stevia as a sweetener... fruit twice a day as a snack... and 3 oz of protien, 2 handfulls of veggies and either a melba toast or 4 stone ground wheat thins...

It's working... I did have a headache the second day, but it passed.... it's not like I dont get those from time to time... I work all day, no issues there... I also have a newborn daughter, so I take the night shift, meaning I usually don't fall asleep til after midnight... get up when the baby gets up... etc... no issues.

And I play with my other kids... 6 days is a lifetime, but I can already see and feel a difference...

It is hard work... but not as hard as it would be to do 500 cal without it... hcg serves a purpose... it's targeting the stored fat... vs starvation mode which would target protein, bone mass...etc...

But if you try, be dedicated... during and after...

I'm not only on the diet, I'm still cooking for my family... and not sneaking tastes posted Jan 29th, 2010 5:29 pm

My husband started HCG on thanskgiving weekend. He went from a size 44" to a size 36. Amazing results. Not hungry, and the only side effects were a little headache in the beginning, and some constipation (or definite lack of food to necessitate a bm? )
I started on xmas, and have dropped a few sizes so far. So, about 20 pounds for me and 40 for him. He continued to lose after the stabilization phase..and looks amazing.
The HCG does work. If it didnt then you'd be falling off the hcg wagon, after a few days. I'm almost to my last week and I'm still not hungry.

There are no symptoms of DKA, or any other negative side effects. The only thing "negative" i would say is if you cheat on the diet, you get some GI effects..(diahrea,gas etc) if you eat fatty foods..
We purchased our HCG at www.healthyhcg.com and have done great from day one . I lost two pounds on the loading days..so OBVIOUSLY it works..i cant imagine pounding down mcdonalds, and chocolate and deep fried food and soda, and things of that nature and still lose weight? ...uh..not so much.

I do not agree with this article at all. I am an educated person who has never done diet pills or any extreme diet. I have been trying many diets to just lose about 15-20 pounds over the last several years. Hcg does work, and it is easy to do. I have used the drops for 21 days so far and lost 12 pounds. My husband is on it also and has lost 18 pounds. We are eating healthy foods, feel great energy, and are not hungry. It is the best diet ever and has gotten me out of the poor eating habits. A coworker recommended it as she lost 20 pounds in a month and knows several people who it has also worked with. I am actually thrilled! By the way, the fat is coming off in exactly the right places. You obviously have not done the REAL research to this diet. It WORKS. With Health Care a big issue in the U.S., this diet is the best. It does NOT cause you to lose any structural fat or normal fat...ONLY the abnormal fat that is stored in abnormal places. THAT is where you lose, and that is the FAT you lose. It also gets you back to the basics of eating healthy....not processed foods that come in a box at your front door! I NEVER had ANY side effects. I've been off the diet for over 5 months now, and I've STILL kept the weight off! I'm so glad to see people reporting their successes! GOOD LUCK TO THOSE OF YOU ON THE HCG DIET! Sure Hcg works! I think anyone eating 500 calories a day will lose weight and very fast! I believe that this diet is great for those who are obese and need to lose the weight for medical reasons, since the side effects for being overweight can be dangerous. BUT if you only have 10-20 lbs you want to lose, try doing it the natural way! Don't be tempted to take an injection when you can lose the weight by eating right and exercising. You will be at risk for side effects you otherwise would not be faced with by eating right and exercising! I don't think it is a good diet for everyone! Your brain needs the protein your body would be drained of if you tried these shots, especially if you don't have more than 20 lbs to lose! Your fat stores are not sufficient enough to feed your organs at that point. Don't be greedy! Be smart instead and lose weight by being HEALTHY! posted Jan 21st, 2010 11:03 am

I have been on the HCG diet for about 17 days and how lost 13 pounds. I have not been hungry at all until about the 3rd week where I experienced slight stomach gurgling, but no real hunger. This I believe correlates with my menstrual cycle and has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the HCG. Anyway, from day 1, I have been exercising a few times a week while eating my very low calorie diet. I have been doing Body Pump, strength training classes, Kickboxing, Yoga, & cardio all with no feelings of faint. It has been quite the opposite actually. I have had full amount of energy and more I would say, all on a 500 calorie diet. To be able to function as well as exercise is proof that the body is releasing fat stores into the blood to be used as energy. So to say that the diet does not work and is all about the restrictive calories is just out of ignorance of not understanding the mechanism of the diet. I have also been checking my urine for ketones which tells you if your body is burning fat for energy. My body has been in a state of ketosis, which is your body's preferred state, since about the first few days. So however you may argue the mechanism of how my body is in ketosis, it is and I am not feeling hunger, faint, foggy etc. I would recommend this diet to anyone struggling with weight loss or anyone interested in resetting their metabolism and healing lesions on their hypothalamus. posted Jan 20th, 2010 9:13 am

My wife and I started on a "doctor" supersived program last Tuesday. We actually didn't see the doctor, just a nurse practitioner. We started this because 2 guys at my company lost about 100 pounds each on the HCG diet.

I have been doing fine on it (no real significant weight loss yet), but my wife has been mean hungry. I mean MEAN hungry.

Anyway, I started to do some research on the web to see if anyone else had had this issue. We were thinking that maybe the pregnancy hormone was making her more hungry (like she was during her pregnancies).

ANYWAY, maybe ignorance might have been better. Or, maybe I should have done some research beforehand. Having read through this article and then clicking through to the FDA decisions and all of the study results --- common folks, it's obvious that HCG does NOT help you lose weight any faster or easier than a 500 calorie a day diet.

I think what it does prove though is the power of the subconscious mind. The studies did not show that you didn't lose weight on the diet --- they all just showed that the placebo group lost the same amount of weight.

Anyone in this country with a weight problem will know how hard it is to lose weight. If people can convince themselves that this diet works, and that belief allows them to lose weight that they would never be able to lose with any other methods, more power to it!

Look at the testimonials from people in this forum. Losing incredible amounts of weight on this when they had tried every other diet without success.

HERE'S MY DILEMMA EVEVERYONE: what do I do about the fact that my wife and I are in the middle of this diet?

1. I have already paid $1,600 for this diet for the two of us.
2. My wife has a really hard time even starting on most diets. She has done this for a week with me already.
3. I'm pretty certain that I'm going to stop using the HCG cream that they gave me and just be part of the "placebo" group. I think I'll lose just as much weight going to the weekly meetings and eating the lo-calorie diet. Actually, I think the fruit that they let you eat is less effective than low carb diets like Atkins. I might just modify the diet. I think the key is just sticking to a good diet for 6 weeks.
4. With my wife though, I think if I start telling her that this is bogus, she will stop the diet altogether, which would be bad for her. I'm tempted to switch her HCG cream out with hand lotion. She'll smell the difference though.

I will update this post in 6 weeks to let everyone know the results.

Wow, I gotta say that after first reading the article, then starting at the bottom and reading up through all the comments, I have changed my mind and decided to try the hCG program.

I'm not sure how the MLB banning hcg has any significance whatsoever to this debate as the reason for the ban was because hCG is used as an adjunctive therapy along with anabolic steroids to minimize the steroid's side effects... it had absolutely nothing to do with its use for weightloss. Since this was the only real argument against it, I have to go on the side of the plethora of users who have given their testimony right here.

I can't wait to have my own success story to report. Thank goodness for the masses willing to speak up against blatant bias. posted Jan 10th, 2010 1:30 pm

Ive lost 26 lbs in 33 days. Im a 39 yo male who has always seen extra fat in my low back and upper chest, having worked with personal trainers, watched my diet etc, I have never seen the results I have experienced with the HCG protocol. I have lost 4 inches in my chest and over 3 inches in my waist. Since adolescence i have seen the Man-boob- or "moob" in the mirror but this is really taking the fatty areas off my chest more than the diets and excercise have ever done alone.

Lexy, I am a health professional, MD to be exact, and I agree that this is not a safe way to lose weight. You will lose weight just from eating only 500 calories a day (minimum to keep metabolism going is 1000), but your brain needs sugar to keep running well. Your heart could care less, it likes fat, but you need the calories to keep the metabolism going and the brain thinking well. I would never recommend this to my patients. Programs like Weight watchers work well as you learn how to eat, reset your metabolism by eating less gradually over time, and can keep it off if you continue to follow the plan. I am not some skinny person who doesn't know what they speak of. I was successful on WW, losing 60 pounds until i gave up out of stress and have gained the weight back. I KNOW IT WORKS if you work the system, and the support helps many folks. It is medically proven to work and is healthy. FORGET HORMONES--they are trouble or the major leagues wouldn't have banned them. posted Jan 8th, 2010 2:18 pm

It seems most of the comments on here are actually positive for hcg weight loss.

My wife & I did 1 round a few months ago. I lost right at 50 pounds, she lost 25. I don't know if hCG does all it says, in terms of distributing fat/reshaping the body, but all I can say is I didn't feel hungry and we were sad when we ran out of hcg (or quit because of immunity) b/c it wasn't difficult and we wanted to keep losing.

After the diet was over, I slowly added carbs back in & didn't gain weight back. After 'stabilizing' we both started earting horribly again- but even eating mcdonalds, etc every day for 2 months I gained back only 8 lbs and my body wouldn't go over that. Another 2 months later of eating horribly I have gained back a total of 15 lbs out of the 50 I lost. We start a new round tomorrow and this time we'll not go right back to the fat food lifestyle. posted Jan 7th, 2010 4:18 pm

Here's a link to another well-researched article that explains HCG is ineffective and a waste of money.

http://health.howstuffworks.com/health-illness/wellness/physical-fitness/weight-loss/hcg-diet.htm/printable

"Most independent, peer-reviewed studies of the hCG diet have shown no difference in weight loss between subjects on a low-calorie diet who received hCG injections and subjects who received a placebo [source: Conis]. One study even showed that both the placebo group and the hCG group reported major hunger pangs throughout the treatment."

To Lexy: I'm a registered dietitian and ACSM health fitness specialist. I'm an expert in weight management through professional training and life experiences, including a family history with heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and life-long history of dieting that has failed my mom, sister, aunt, and myself. I have gained and lost significant weight in my 20-30's. I know more about the struggles of weight management than I care to know, especially what it is like to make false attempt after attempt focusing on finding something to "fix" a weight problem rather than having the guts to make long-term behavior changes.

ok, started the actual injections today and its all i can do not to eat the computer as i type. i am pretty sure this is just the psychological effect of being on a diet, but hopefully a few days of this and i will be less likely to consider eating my dog. thanks everyone for your success stories. i paid a ton for this plan and was skeptical after reading articles like the one here. i didnt research it much but undergrad in biology made me think this was a good idea. anyway, i am a firm believer in shocking one's system in to losing weight since that is really the only way i ever seem to do so. like the others here in similar boats, i exercise regularly, eat minimal calories and pretty much just stagnate. after getting out of a horrid relationship last january, i dropped about 30 pounds that i had put on throughout the 2 years prior (scary...didnt change a thing, except getting rid of the guy! stress????) but have pretty much stopped losing weight the last 4 months.

Extreme measures like this are what i have always needed to jump start weight loss. i am hoping it works, know i have the will power and have a few questions maybe some people here can answer...

1. i have to travel for a week soon and am wondering if i can bring this stuff with me or will the solution not being refridgerated for some time (flight, etc) be terrible? i assume people have to travel with insulin so there must be a way for me to keep this up while on the road.
2, has everyone else been advised to stop injections on their period?

wish me luck and i am psyched to see some of the responses here as i was beginning to wonder if this wasnt something my weird doctor thought up on his own ! :) posted Jan 2nd, 2010 6:49 pm

I would like to respond to the person who wanted to know if anyone with Type II Diabetes has tried hcg--yes I have have and yes it does work! I was diagnosed 12 years ago with Type II and had tried everything: Weight Watchers-3 times and I gained weight!; Nutrisystem-the food sucked; Points in your favor-which worked temporarily but I gained every pound back. This was my last shot before Gastric Bypass or LapBand surgery. I have lost 18 lbs. and 5" from my waist! I am almost done with my first round-I have another 84 lbs. to lose-but plan to do at least 2 more to get to my goal weight. I would recommend talking with your physician first, but with my physician-she knew nothing else worked, and I needed to lose this weight desperatly. I say go for it! posted Jan 1st, 2010 5:42 pm

I completed the HCG diet in September with great success! I lost 27 lbs in 42 days ( did not cheat at all). I am in my mid 30's and had put on 25 lbs over the past 5 years.
I am a firm believer in "no quick fixes" and stood firm that hard work was the only way to lose weight. However, before the HCG plan, I was working out 5 days a week for 1-1 1/2 hours a day with a trainer ( for 4 years). I was also watching my diet ( I have always eaten healthy making wise food choices). I felt discouraged and so stuck with my weight. I started this plan with a skeptical outlook but was ready to try anything but diet pills.
The food choices are extremely limited, so look at the list of foods before you start the plan. I did get tired of the food after 30+ days, but the weight loss results kept me very motivated!! Through the holidays I am only up 2 lbs from my original weight loss. I consider this weight loss plan a miracle for me, who had been working out like crazy and eating correctly with no weight loss results.
I would recommend consulting your dr. before you begin, just to be safe. I have a friend who just completed 42 days and lost 35 lbs ( she has high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and RA-she did consult her physician)
My only side effect was constipation. My food cravings have changed since I have been off the diet. I loved salads before the diet, but now I crave salads!! SO,SO,SO glad I did this diet! Would recommend this diet to anyone who has tried EVERYTHING!

Good luck to everyone who feels that this plan is for them! posted Dec 31st, 2009 12:38 am

Thanks for your comments, it's helped me decide to try the HCG shots. There is a clinic that charges $1500 for a 40 day protocal which includes intake exam and bloodwork and daily injections at the clinic. This is a medical doctor (family practice) who is offering this.
I've also struggled with weight all my life, and feel that those who never had a weight problem don't understand. IF ALL IT TOOK WAS DIET AND EXERCISE, THEN NO ONE WOULD HAVE A WEIGHT PROBLEM! I exercise daily (at least a 40 min. walk with my three big dogs) did WW, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystems, liquid protein, body for life, southbeach diet, went to an endocrynologist, nutritionalist, and I'm still fat! My friend's wife did this and is happy with the results. She's gained about 10 pounds back, after loosing over 80 pounds last year, but is healthier than ever. I'm planning on starting January 4th, I'll let you know how it goes.... Lisa posted Dec 30th, 2009 1:44 pm

As a researcher, I'm very familiar with the placebo effect. I've actually had patients ask where they could purchase the treatment administered when the treatment itself was a control of deionized water. The mind is a powerful thing. As a skeptic, I understand the author's concerns. However, with all of information I've read about hCG, I haven't come across any evidence of side effects greater than those associated with morbid obesity. Though I admire the author's attempts to avert harm, I personally believe that the risks vs. benefit should always be considered and in my opinion the benefits of hCG seem to far outweigh the risks.

let me first start out by saying, those of you out there that insist being fat is because were all lazy and fast food junkies is absolutely FALSE. Sure, the morbidly obese are but myself, being 45lbs over weight is NOT. I have eaten healthy for yearsss. I can exercise and diet all i want but i never seem to be able to lose. Guess what, here's something you might not know....its HARD.

Now to HCG, im currently on it. Ive been on it for 12 days now, that means 10 days of diet and i've lost 8lbs. Before I started I lost 8lbs on my own but it took me three months.
This works. You should see a doctor, don't order it off the internet. Do the injections, it doesn't hurt and suck it up. Yeah it's super low calorie but your not hungry. yeah it's expensive but compared to weightwatchers and the zone and blah blah blah, its reasonable. You have to stick to it. 40 days, if you can't manage that then you don't want it badly enough.

These claims, like this article says, that say the 500 calories will leave you weak is totally incorrect, I can continue my daily life normally with no problems what so ever.

hcg is good stuff. If your really committed but haven't been unable to do it with diet and exercise alone, you should do hcg.

Funny what lazy fat people will resort to for a short term fix for a long term problem.....its simple! Exercise and eat fewer calories.....thats it....but most are too lazy (which is why they are fat) and want it NOW NOW NOW!!! How long did it take for you to get fat???? 10-15 years.....YUP it will take 2-3 years of exercise and eating health (you cannot eat McDonalds for breakfast (1500 calories), Taco Bell for lunch (1500 calories) and Pizza Hut for dinner (2000 calories)! Most 40 year old inactive people only need about 2000 calories PER DAY! If you eat 4000-5000 calories per day your will gain weight and be fat...its that simple!!!!!!!! Now stop shooting urine into you body and eat only 1600-1700 calories per day and spend 1 hour on the elliptical and you will LOSE WEIGHT..............I have one thing to say about ALL DIETS....REBOUND.....if you dont learn anything, you will just gain it back and likely more...... posted Dec 14th, 2009 7:07 pm

Trixie, 500 calories a day may be straining to a person who is not over weight, but a morbidly obese person has all the reserves of vitamins and nutrients stored in their fat, thus the reason one would lose so much. It is healhty to lose around 1-2 lbs per week, but a person weighing 350 lbs is going to naturally shed this weight faster simply because they have so much more..... posted Dec 13th, 2009 2:51 am

I've seen so many people do well on this diet that I have a hard time with the author's perspective. The point of the diet is that the hormone helps the body metabolize fat that otherwise would not be used.

So basically, I would never recommend a 500 calorie diet for normal dieters, but with hCG, your body will actually use fat stores that are otherwise preserved when your body goes into "starvation mode." Make sure if you're doing this that you've got a good vitamin to go with it.

Right now you can get the hCG drops on sale with vitamins at . They have free shipping too. posted Dec 5th, 2009 12:37 pm

Umm.. hello, you will lose the same amount of weight on a 500 calorie diet, without the HCG. 500 calories? That equals severe kidney damage, heart damage, and body stress. It's frightening to read that people are saying in public that they've lost 30 pounds in a month.. that's 7.5 per week, when no doctor in the world would be okay if you lost more than 2 pounds a week. Dangerous stuff... And guess what? That one person wrote that she can gain 8 pounds almost instantly if she's not careful. Yeah.. because your body is so undernourished, and dehydrated, that it tries to compensate. This is insane. posted Dec 3rd, 2009 12:14 pm

Learning that truth has allowed me to question everything that the US government does with regards to ALL aspects of life. Food and weight loss was just one aspect I begin to rethink. It took 5 minutes of research to learn that hCG is despised by the US government and ALL its agencies and departments. That can only mean ONE thing to me....that its probably good for you. I've been on this hCG protocal for 3 weeks and it has changed my life forever in the most positive senses any human being can have. Clearly this must be banned?! Cigarettes, alcohol, gambling, 8 hrs of TV, massive amounts of processed food....just fine for the US government, FDA, NIH, HHS, and the FTC which sued Trudeau for every penny he made of his #1 selling book. The other thing that I want to add, is that this protocol is not for everyone. You pick your priorities and strengths. For me, it was impossible for me to exercise for weightloss. But my diet was very good. so with this, I was able to lose 30 pounds in one month!

The downfall is, you have to basically cut out carbs, and can only eat certain foods. More than likely, some of the weight will eventually return, but not all.

Losing 30 pounds in 30 days is hugely significant. But then, you have to train your body to metabolise a variety of foods.

Or, if you have time to exercise, and do not want to cut out any food groups, by far, the best thing to do is eat whatever you want, and keeping it at a low calorie level, (like 1200 calories for women)

then, if you exercise most days of the week for at least 45 minutes, that should yield 2 pound weightloss a week. For me, I did not want to wait for SIX MONTHS to reach my goal. But there is no volatility.

HCG, the effects are immediate, and in the end, you get their faster, even in the long run. posted Nov 25th, 2009 9:59 am

HCG for weightloss definitely works, but there are some drawbacks.

You will lose the weight quickly. I lost 30 pounds my first round, and being that I could not exercise, HCG was a godsend for me.

The drawback, is that even though I am way ahead than if I had not done the protocol, my body is definitely experiencing more volatility than it ever did before. One slip up, can yield a 8 pound weigh gain! At first, you do not know what is going on. You think its due to something else, (ie, too much salt, premenstrual weight gain,etc.. ) and you expect your body to lose it, just like it does while on the protocol, but then, you slowly creep up.

all of this is explained in the book. They say that after a two pound weightgain in the maintenance phase, you have to strictly diet to get it off. If you do not weight yourself everyday, and you fall out side these limits, you can guarantee that the weight, (at least some of it) is going to come back, and when it does, its goign to be a violent weight gain.

Like I said, I am happy I did it. Now, I am working on adding muscle mass. I still have weight to lose, and I am doing it the more traditional way. (exercising and a low calorie diet) I am losing 2 pounds a week.

Thats the thing to be careful of on this diet. Its the volatility of your weight afterwards. And its basically a low carb diet, and all the ill effects of cutting out such a significant food source.

Adding carbs back in slowly, is a very tricky thing to do. I thought I was being slow, and come to find out, I wasn't. posted Nov 24th, 2009 11:36 am

-it is not FDA approved for a reason.

-it has been studied extensively where it is shown that HCG alone does not cause a significant amount of weightloss unless combined with the 500cal diet.

-Placebos are very effective in motivating the body to change perceptions/feelings/desires. Injecting an "expensive" "intramuscular" medication gives one a strong sense that this medication will work. It is the "will power" that one obtains in thinking that the Hcg decreases your drive to eat and therefore now can eat in small amounts. It is a diet not of less calories BUT of of what you eat that amounts to the calories that will make you store less adipose tissue. If you eat refined sugar you will most likely store adipose. Changing your diet to food that was only during the "caveman" days is a good way of knowing what is good to eat. Many fruits, vegatables, grains, meat and fish.

SO far, as i have read in the reviews is a positive result. I congradulate you that it is working and glad that you are on your way to a thinner life. As long as you maintain a healthy diet, excercise, and avoid high risk situations, your chances of being healthy throughout life are improved.
-the cons of the HCG diet: a 500cal diet. A 500 cal diet alone will result in mobilizing adipose stores. Using Fat tissue as you main source of fuel is not ideal since metabolizing adipose tissue on a restricted diet will make you ketotic. Ketosis is seen in diabetics who are insulin dependent. Insulin is used to allow glucose to enter cells of the body to be metabolized into energy (to make ATP). When this is not allowed, adipose is then the main source of energy. Metabolizing adipose to free fatty acids to energy, the byproduct is ketones which can accumulate to cause DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis). Before injectible insulin, diabetics would die from this. Now diabetics can lead normal (close to normal) and lengthy lives. Starvation cause adipose to be mobilized for fuel as well. Ketoacidosis throws off your electrolytes (Na, K, Cl, bicarb). Which would and can be the contributing factor of the "side effects" of the Hcg injection). A 500 cal diet is sarvation (although not recognized immediately by the one who is following this type of diet).
-Hcg is an indicator for pregnancy and a follicular stimulator for ovulation. One who does a pregnancy test will always appear "pregnant" (in theory) and one who's chances of pregnancy will be enhaced, respectively (since Hcg is used as a fertility drug). So your chances of pregnancy are increased and you may not know it intil you are 'showing' (which some who are taking the Hcg injection may be severely obese and may risk of not knowing they are pregnant....and not get the proper prenatal care).
---these are points why the Hcg injection is not recommended by the FDA.

Other points:
-what happens when you stop the Hcg injection? You are now dependent on an injection to maintain your weight.
-continuous injections, if they truley contribute to decreasing your drive to eat and not just will power-drive alone, would cause a continuous malnourished state which is both unhealthy and unattractive (unattractive if this is what some of the 'celebrities' are using to keep their weight down). Anorexia may not be a problem though since those who take (the 'layman' and not celebrities) are most likely in an baseline obese diagnosed state.

just some things to think about before injecting yourself with this particular chemical.

Rebecca,

As you can see you got a lot of people riled. It's good to raise a red flag, but hCG dieters will tell you how well the diet works.

The advice to run a marathon is what got to me. As a former runner and one time marathoner, I would warn anyone not to run. Running more than a half hour makes your body release fat into the blood for fuel. When you eat again, your body has to restore that fat.

When you finally get injured by running too much (you always end up injured) your body is a fat making machine.

Eating fat doesn't make you fat. Carbohydrates up insulin levels and that drives fat storage. It's all in Gary Taubes' book "Good Calories, Bad Calories."

Since it flies in the face of everything we think we know about weight loss, most diet "gurus' dismiss Taubes' conclusion that exercise makes us hungry it and doesn't help us lose weight.

And to all a healthy weight,

To those wondering where to get HCG. It is mostly found in weight loss clinics in most cities. The pharmacy cost for it is around $50, but expect to pay a retail of $250 or more. If you pay more, be sure it includes an exam, a full workup with blood tests, etc. and are getting weekly care from the doctor.

I don't recommend buying it on the internet, because who knows what it is. How could you even test it? Find a dr or clinic.

I worked in bariatrics and medicine for years, and honestly there are such RARE conditions and genetics that truly cause such issues.

Many make excuses and compensations for their weight, and although claim to be taking action, few actually take the time to learn proper nutrition and exercise.

Isn't it ironic that those who eat well and exercise ARE NOT OVERWEIGHT?

Great News to hear LeahStorm on your weight loss thus far. I too am on my first round and into my 2nd wk. I am paying close to 300 but this does include blood wk, wkly B12 and weekly Dr. visits. I don't have any regrets thus far. As to the post by kjlewis . I will tell u that I did suffer w/a migraine but this was due to an overload of "acandy". I had the worst Migraine ever. However, I have NOT had another one since that day. I will say that when u consume the recommended water. This helps as well. My Dr. recommended at least 2QTs. Now this is alot of water, but it is well worth it. I was also recommended to try the Tea4life, which is a cleanser. I just purchased this on Nov 6th. It actually taste pretty good.

As for the post by beth green. On the question about "blood clots". I read that as well and don't have a history with these medical issues. I read the reviews on this site and others before starting the program. My advice to anyone, is to do your research and make your choice.

I am extremely nervous about needles. I thought I would NEVER be able to administrer the HCG. However, I am tired of having the excess weight "more". So you make a decision on what you want and make a choice.

I don't have any regrets on my choice to get myself in shave via the HCG route. I'm not sure if anyone here is also inclding this with the 500cal diet, but if so. This is challenging but well worth it and I don't think that it's impossible.

To date, I have lost 8pds during my first week. So I'm into my 2nd week now. I'll report my loss after I get weighed in on this coming Friday Dr's visit.

As always, Good Luck and Good Health to all :) posted Nov 8th, 2009 5:10 pm

I started the Hcg 4 days ago and have begun having migraines. I have also felt irritable and cranky. I have visitors coming in today (Nov.7) so I'm going to postpone the diet and start again next week. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid the cranky/ headache symptoms? I hate to stop but I can't feel this bad while I'm entertaining company for the week. I may try again after they leave. I ended up having to take Imitrex yesterday for the headache. I haven't had a migraine in years so I'm pretty sure it's the Hcg hormone. posted Nov 7th, 2009 8:36 am

Okay, I am convinced. This stuff is worth a try. I am confused on whether to go to a clinic or buy from the internet. Is the HCG you buy on the net the same as in a clinic ? Does the sublingual work as well as the injectable? posted Nov 6th, 2009 11:02 pm

I agree with cac4me. This review is not based on facts.
I also have a few points to make with Mera, the athletic champion that runs 30 miles a week, and thinks it's ok to criticize everyone else, as if they never tried to exercise.
Mera, you, like the article above, tried to scare people from using this drug, but failed to mentioned facts and statistics that could be backed up with studies, or even your own experience.
Of the people who HAVE had experience using hCG as a weight loss tool, none of them have had bad experiences.
HCGhopeful has nailed it, you over simplified a very complicated struggle.
hCG has been used for weight loss for over 50 years. It's not just the drug that helps, its the change in lifestyle afterward.

I'm on day 24 of my first round of hCG. I've lost 15 pounds. I have PCOS, and I'm fine.
My sister has lost 14 pounds, eating the vegetarian version of the diet.

I'm paying $125 for a 30 day supply of injectable hCG. I have a friend in a clinic, but I know his cost on it is $50. If you are paying more, I would hope your care includes blood work, weekly dr. visits, and your dr. being on call for any questions you have at any time.

First and foremost. This review is not based on facts. The facts would be from this person's own experience. I just started the program on Friday Nov 30, 2009. I am going through the HCG program via diet clinic. Since starting the program. I have "not" had any terrible side effects. The 500cal diet is very strick and I will say is a "challenge". I'm finding that if I eat between meals I'm not as hungry at meal time. Also, I try to eat my meals the same time everyday. I do fine in the morning and lunch. When I get home, is when the challenge begins.

I've also been running on my treadmill everyday since starting the plan. I've been running up to 1mi per day. Additionally, I do situps and other exercises. I will say that on Tuesday, Nov 3, 2009. I CHEATED when I came home from work. Due to all the candy that I kept around my house from Holloween over the weekend. After eating the candy and being on this 500cal diet. I suffered from a really bad migraine headache. I decided not to take any meds for it and lied down instead. The next morning (today) Nov 4, 2009. I felt 100% better and no headache. Also, I have been trying to take in a minimum of 2QTS of water. I feel better when I'm taking in plenty of water. I will continue to post here with my results as I continue on the program. I checked on numerous sites for reviews to the HCG Program. From what I've read thus far. There appears to more positive feedback than negative. Including the one posted above. Here's to seeing less of me soon :) posted Nov 4th, 2009 5:32 pm Profile send message  Message

To Mera, of course you have to work out and "eat right," everyone knows that. Unfortunately is not as simple as saying just eat right and get your body moving. Some people do that and lose NOTHING. Exercising and eating right is not always enough for certain people. Especially those who yoyo diet. Some people need a jump start to their diet. That is where HCG comes into play. You may not understand. What you should understand is that losing weight is an extremely complicated process, it's not simple, so don't simplify other people's struggle. Because is truly is a struggle. posted Nov 3rd, 2009 9:56 pm

As a former fertility patient, I have lots of experience with injectable hCG. It is not a drug to be taken lightly and if I didn't have to take it to have a baby, I certainly wouldn't. After my daughter was born, I lost 50 lbs by working out and watching what I eat. Was it easy? No. I have PCOS and hypothyroid, so losing weight is never easy for me. However I don't believe that drugs and severely restrictive diets are the way to go. Instead, I started walking then running several times a week. I now run 25-30 miles a week, spin several times a week, and participate in weight training classes. I eat a sensible (ie healthy) diet. I was a couch potato and now am training for a full marathon (I've already run several half marathons). Eat right and move your body - it's not easy but it DOES work. posted Nov 3rd, 2009 4:47 pm

I lost 100 pounds on the HCG diet, in 3 rounds. Far more than I was ever able to lose on any other diet. Unfortunately after a year of keeping the weight off, I gained it back after eating poorly having to live in hotel rooms around the country for work. I have never needed my diabetes medication since I started the first round, no matter how I ate.
I did an accidental experiment on myself and discovered the HCG does indeed have a powerful effect. On my 4th round, returning to the diet, I was hungry all the time, had a very hard time staying with the diet, and wasn't losing weight. I finally remembered I had tried a new brand of HCG. I went back on my original brand, and immediately started losing weight very quickly, and had no trouble with the diet again. It also goes to show you that just being on a 500 cal a day diet in no way insures weight loss for those of us who's metabolisms are so messed up that we are very overweight. posted Nov 1st, 2009 7:56 pm

IT WORKS!! you have to stick to the diet. i have cheated maybe two days on the diet and didnt lose anything for those days. but i have never seen this much weight loss in anything i have tried. and i think that if you go back to the way u were eating before from any diet you will gain back not jus from this diet!! so i say IT WORKS! its expensive but it works!! posted Nov 1st, 2009 5:54 pm

Male 55yr of age 34 pounds in 30 days. Male 42yr of age 17lbs in 12 days. Each and every case they were not hungry, never felt better and were extremely happy with the results. I would happen to disagree with the author of this article. I have 2 rounds of HCG and I have have lost 85lbs. My HCG had to be adjusted withthe second round but I wasn"t hungry and and my energy level remand high. Sure on a 500 KCAL diet alone you would hardly be able to function but I was able to do 40 mins of cardio, 30 min of weights and play tennis for 2hrs without any problem. I am a nurse and work 12-16hrs days and have no problems. I drink plenty of water and tea. It is a mind set and a life style change. It isn"t a quick fix system. It is a life long change and the HCG helps you to accomplish that goal. You need to have the mind set and a good support system to help you along the way. I recommend this diet to everyone who wants to lose weight, but I also inform them that it isn"t as easy as some make it out to seem. It takes dedication. You TRULEY have to put 110% into. The result are amazing!!!! Please dont let articles like this scare you. Research it. Talk to your doctor or find a doctor who offers this and talk with them. I have had no side effects from the injections but not everyone is the same. There are side effects with any medication you take, even tylenol or advil. Just educate yourself and see if works for you. It worked GREAT for me. posted Oct 24th, 2009 9:15 am

UGH!! More scare tactics. If you can't make a buck, poo poo it, right? God forbid anyone learn to eat fruit, veggies and lean meats!!

I'm on hcg now. I'm 41/F. I'm on day 9, and have lost 6 pounds. That's 9 days including the first 3 when i ate anything and everything I wanted. I even went to an all you can eat buffet on day 3 and had a full plate of dessert. (oink)

I'll repost again in a few weeks to let you know how I feel. I'm keeping a journal. Yes, I'm hungry from time to time, but if you eat little bits steadily throughout the day, it's easier. Apples are quite filling.

My sister is a vegetarian. She started same day I did, and has lost 7 pounds. She eats egg whites instead of meat. She's 24.

We use the injectable hcg, and we do it at home. We weigh daily. We smile every time.

I'm happy to discuss with anyone about this. posted Oct 23rd, 2009 6:07 pm

Yes sure if you go back to your old ways after this diet you will most likely gain weight back. We are looking at this as an opportunity to restart or eating habbits and reset our life. I paid $1700 to sign up at a local "cattle call" hcg center in Dallas. It's impossible. 500 calories of nothing but tomatoes, oranges, grapefruit and chicken. By the end of the first week I was so hungry and tired, I binged and gained back the meager 2 lbs I had lost. I tried three more times (I still have another 20 day supply of hcg in my medicine cabinet), and the same thing happened. The weight would not come off and I starved myself to where I could hardly function. This is a huge scam. People that can stay on a 500 calorie a day diet don't need the shot -- the diet will work on it's own. But its carb-free and sugar free, so the minute you eat a single carb, you will gain all of the weight back. Buyer beware! posted Oct 12th, 2009 12:35 am

Here are the results of actual scientifically controlled studies which were conducted in 1976, 1987, 1990, and 1995. Do we really have to perform the study again every time the hCG marketing engine revs up for another round of money making? In 1976, Researchers Stein, Julis, Peck , Hinshaw, Sawicki, and Deller concluded: "There was no statistically significant difference in the means of the two groups in number of injections received, weight loss, percent of weight loss, hip and waist circumference, weight loss per injections, or in hunger ratings. HCG does not appear to enhance the effectiveness of a rigidly imposed regimen for weight reduction." A review of 20 available studies published in the German Medical Journal "Geburtshilfe und Frauenheilkunde" concluded "These studies showed a significant weight reduction during dieting, but no differences between treatment groups in respect of body weight, body proportions and feeling of hunger," and "...the opinion of the German steroid toxicology panel is still valid, that hCG is ineffective in dieting and should not be used." A review of the data by Lijesen, Theeuwen, Assendelft, and Van Der Wal published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology said plainly "We conclude that there is no scientific evidence that HCG is effective in the treatment of obesity; it does not bring about weight-loss of fat-redistribution, nor does it reduce hunger or induce a feeling of well-being." There are more, but I'll save you the time, the conclusions are the same.

HCG Diet Conflict of Interest?

So, the studies agree with hCG people on one point. On a strict very low calorie diet supervised by a doctor, you will lose weight quickly. However, the hCG proponents would have you believe that you need to buy daily doses of the hCG pregnancy hormone (from them) and inject it daily in order for the diet to work. Hmm? See any conflict of interest there?

Has anyone kept weight off for longer than 2 years?

Also, I posted this content on my personal blog and got a few supporters as well as several people who came out and said that it did not work for them.

This article is uninformed. Yes, this diet would be dangerous @5oo calories a day IF hcg didn't do what it's supposed to do - move excess stored nutrients into the bloodstream. The reason the metabolism doesn't suffer is because it is constantly being "fed" from one's own fat stores. (That's why metabolism changes for the better during and after the diet).

HcG does work as the protocol says it will, and I've lost 60 pounds. I've maintained the loss for one year, and my:

BMI is now normal
Blood pressure is in the low-normal range
Cholesterol levels are very good now
Metabolism is up from original test

Kevin Trodeau has many reputation issues, but just because he wrote a book on it doesn't mean the diet is a fraud too. posted Oct 6th, 2009 2:13 pm

I have been on hcg for 19 days and have lost 13 pounds so far. I did tons of research and reading before starting this program. The most interesting thing that I discovered is this:

There are thousands of accounts of success stories. There are also lots of articles warning against hcg for weight loss. What I couldn't find? Any actual account of someone who has used hcg unsuccessfully.

That spoke to me more than anything. All of the naysayers out there seem to be people who haven't actually tried it. Everyone who has actually tried it seems to love it.

And you can now add me to that number. I have about 60 more pounds to lose to get to a healthy BMI for my height. My doctor says it will probably take the rest of this round (~23 more days) and one more round of 25 days to get there.

Finally, even if there were some minor side effects (I haven't experienced any to date), they couldn't possibly be worse for my body than what carrying around 75 extra pounds was for me.

Thanks for all of the support and positive messages here! posted Oct 5th, 2009 7:22 pm

I don't believe a word this author is saying. I'm on the HCG diet and I feel wonderful. I was in a rut with no energy for a long time, taking naps and laying on the couch all day; and being on this diet pulled me right out of it. I'm eating like a normal person, not like a morbidly obese person! I used to eat every time I felt a twinge of hunger, or even when I wasn't hungry at all! But I am retraining my mind that I don't need to eat every hour; I will be fine if I'm a little hungry. HCG IS A LIFESTYLE CHANGE. It teaches you to eat right - that's what I love about it. I just started the hcg diet 7 days ago and have lost just over five pounds. It is one of the hardest things I have ever tried, but it works! My goal is to lose 20 lbs. and I intend to stick it out. I would never do this diet if my metabolism did not end up being significantly faster in the end. That is what makes it worth it. The doctor whose care I'm under also wants me to do 3 weeks of 1000 calorie days after the hcg is over before returning to my normal way of eating. Of course if you eat 3 big macs and tons of sugar everyday I could see how you would gain the weight back, but I have always been a sensible eater. Ok, I am on this diet and yes, you do get some side affects.. but lets think about it for a second... The headaches are common for up to a week and it is because (NOT THE HCG ITSELF) it is because you are taking MSG, SODA, FAT, SUGAR, CARBS, ALL sorts of stuff is being taken away from your body that you are use to eating every day and so you get headaches because you dont have the sugar or the caffeine to thin the blood. It is kind of like a caffeine headache and even those go away. but your body goes through a little period of shock if you will. Lets turn it around... if you are a VERY healthy eater and dont drink soda or eat fast food... then you do a "diet" and eat a ton of junk and soda, carbs, sugar, etc... (like super size me) then you will have the same affects. Headache, dizzy, sick, grumpy, tired... but that is because you are doing something different that your body is not use to. We as a country eat out a lot... mostly because we dont have time to cook, or dont want to cook, or whatever the excuse is... we eat out a lot and so were use to chemicals and bad things go into the body that when you actually take that away from the body, you WILL have side affects. BUT those side affects are for the better of the body. You have to re train the body and tell it what is actually GOOD for the body. I have been on the HCG diet now for 20 days and have lost 25 lbs. I "cheated" on the diet once and I seriously hated every second of it! I could taste the gross chemicals of the fries, and I was SOOOOO sick after! I couldn't even eat the rest of the food either! I guess i trained my body well! :) posted Sep 30th, 2009 8:08 pm

Lost 20 lbs in 20 days and very happy about this diet. Is it buring muscle, or fat? I go to the gym every day and took a body fat test on this diet. HIGHLY RECOMENDED.

I Started with 33% body fat x 250lbs, or 82 lbs of fat.

After 20 days I am at 228lbs and 27.7% body fat or 63 lbs of fat.

If you subtract the two you get 19lbs, of fat. I have lost 21 lbs, so clearly most of my loss is fat.

The diet works, but it needs to be a kickoff on a behavior change on eating. We should be eating less, not so late, not so often and avoiding sugar.

Guys - Obesity is one of the #1 killers and it's growing at a fast rate. Sleep apena, joint pain and so much more are the result of a round belly. It also cuts many years from our life if we are heavy. This diet (if it works) and the side effects associated with it are irrelivant compared to the positive effects of reducing obesity risk.

I wish you all well on your diet and future. I for one am planning to change my behavior after this is over. To a healty future !!!! posted Sep 21st, 2009 12:18 pm

I completed the 23 day cycle of HCG about a month ago. According to the doctor, if you eat ANYTHING other than the 500 calorie diet you will gain weight. This was not true for me. I ate whatever I wanted, I just ate small portions, healthier food and worked out. I lost 15 pounds and I'm still keeping it off. posted Sep 20th, 2009 12:42 pm

I just wanted to leave a note for all those who are or have just been completed the HCG diet. I did the diet last year after years of struggling to rid myself of unwanted baby weight. I'm not going to rosy it up by saying it was in any way easy. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but it worked so fast, it kept me going. It has been one year today since I completed the 40 day program (I did it with a doctor in a clinic where I was monitored weekly) and I still have not gained the weight back. Granted, I have kept up a good exercise plan and try to eat right. There have been a few side effects though that I believe are probably due to the hormone surge. I did lose hair after I completed the program. It is now growing back in. I have also noticed that my PMS symptoms are more severe than before and my skin tends to break out a lot more than it did. Other factors could be contributing to this, but I know that all those things can be hormone related. But, in retrospect, I would do it all over again. I lost 40lbs in 40 days (back down to my pre-baby weight) and it took me 8 months to lose 20 before that with hard exercising and dieting.
Take that for what you will because I have seen a lot of people fail on the diet, but if you mean it and you follow it, it works. posted Sep 19th, 2009 1:49 am

HCG is just a natural hormone that helps stimulate your metabolism. People can maintain that low calorie diet because you are absorbing about 1500 calories in body fat a day. So you do not feel hungry. The HCG diet would not be effective if you kept eating regularly.

So true I was in the drug business for a while. If you claim that your drug is 'guaranteed' to cure/help with something. The FDA will come after you.

I just started thhe HCG diet myself because i have seen many have good results. I was a non believer at first. The original HCG diet can be dangerous. The original HCG diet protocol started out everyone with the same amount of calories (500) and protein (200) grams. It didn't matter if a person was 6'10" and 450 pounds or 4'2" and 190 pounds with heart disease. Just plain common sense tells you this is wrong and we all know that a one size fits all diet does not exist! Dr. Simeons patients had to go back to a normal diet after they treatment. This resulted in regaining a lot of the weight they lost. The modern HCG diet may provide Faster Safer Easier Weight Loss than the original. Here you can find more info about the program that i am on:

As with any diet program, if you don't change your eating habits and exercise, the weight will return. I agree, HCG is not a magic pill that will make the weight disappear and stay gone even if you return to your "normal" pre-HCG life patterns.

I know now, when I manage to get in even just 30 minutes of walking every couple of days and try to keep the carbs and sweets to a minimum, my weight will remain stable. But if I pig out (which I have done) for more than two or three days and slack off walking, I pack the weight on very quickly. I have to eat very clean ( veggies, fruit, and lean meat only) for a week to get off two or three days of transgressions. The trick is to recognize this quickly and not let it get away from you.

The HCG is just another diet program and, like any diet program, it will work if you follow the rules. The difference is..it will work quickly which provided great motivation for me to adhere to the strict eating plan. Plus, eating as the plan dictates, especially for that length of time, did help me change my behaviors because I realized it really isn't that hard to plan ahead and make good choices.

As far as the foggy brain goes, after about three days on the HCG protocol I really felt the fog lift - I felt like I was thinking more clear then that I had in years. I'm sure it has something to do with cutting the sugar and carbs out of my diet, but it taught me an important lesson about what I was putting in my body before and how it was really affecting me. I have no doubt if I go back to my pre-HCG eating patterns, I will gain the weight back. It doesn't a dietician to figure that out, it is just common sense. HCG will work but not without making permanent life changes once the injections are over. posted Sep 16th, 2009 5:42 pm

WOW!! lot of "BELEIVERS" in this talkback :). I am a registered dietician and have helping people get into shape for the last 12 years. Using HCG for weight loss has been around since 1954 or so but in the last couple of years I have seen a staggering increase in it's use. In just the last 2 months i have had 7 differnet clients come to see me who have done the hcg injections combined with the diet. Some on their own and others under a physician's care. ALL of them had gained their weight back and 5 of the 7 had gained it back in less than 4 months and then some. One woman had lost over 60 lbs. and had gained it back in 3 MONTHS!! Another female hadn't gone off the diet yet because her daughter and friends had gained their weight back and she was hoping i could help her keep it off. People, even if this was the "miracle" drug everyone has been waiting for there is NO SUBSTITUTE for exercise and a "healthy" diet. Don't let yourself beleive that this hormone is "JUST NOW" being used and working when it has been around for YEARS!! Anyone will lose weight on 500 calories a day. Come talk to me once your bring your caloric intake back up to where your brain functions normally, we'll see how well that weight has stayed off. posted Sep 14th, 2009 3:22 pm

Logically a person would read about the HCG diet and think the claims were crazy, but after actually completing one 43 day round of the program I lost 30 pounds and felt better than I ever had.

I took a multi-vitamin, B-12 drops, and ate exactly as the plan recommended. I was able to give up beer (which I enjoyed every weekend), sweets (which I indulged in everyday), and caffeine (which I was completed addicted to) without difficulty. I had a slight headache the first two days but beyond that I had no other negative side effects - actually I had quite the opposite. I was having some stomach issues before going on the HCG protocol such as gas, acid reflux, and cramps. All of those issues completely disappeared which I attribute to eating only fruits, veggies, and lean protein (no fatty or fried foods) and not exactly to the HCG but the HCG did give me the will power to make better choices. I tried veggies I had never tried before, learned to love fruit, and enjoyed the taste of my food without alot of sauces and other added ingredients.

I had alot of energy, slept well, and lost weight in areas that were very difficult before such as around my waist and upper back. I have stayed off of the HCG for the last eight weeks and kept my weight stable within three pounds. I will be starting round two this weekend and I can't wait to drop another 25 to 30 pounds. I am going to a local doctor and having my prescription filled at an actual pharmacy though, buying anything injectable over the Internet is crazy to me, but not the HCG program itself. posted Sep 14th, 2009 2:54 pm

You critics need to keep your opinons to yourself unless you tries the HCG diet. I have researched this more than anyone. I even read the origional documents written in the 1950's. I have lost 35 pounds on this diet and I still have 14 days to go. I have tried every diet out there and this has been the only one that was true to its work. I have never experienced hunger or food cravings. And I never felt better. So before you make your comments- why do'nt you try the program and then form an opinion. posted Sep 12th, 2009 8:17 pm

Like all of the rest of the comments, I agree completely with everyone on here. I've tried Jenny Craig, NutriSystem, the Cookie diet all with failure because I was so hungry and only lost 1 pound a week. With the hcg shots, I lost 7 pounds my first week and my cravings for bad food started to go away. Like any diet it is hard to do, but I can already tell that I have toned up and I'm not losing energy like other diets. I will admit that I do get headaches, but mainly because (my belief) I have not been drinking soda like I used to and eating as much sugar. I agree.....I believe the government is trying to control this because they know it works and we won't go dumping money into their hands on useless medications and weight loss remedies. posted Sep 10th, 2009 1:54 am

I'm on my 2nd round of HCG and I love it! The 1st time I did the 43 day protocol and lost 28 lbs. and 7 additional during the 3 weeks of setting my metabolism at my new weight (with the help of some B12 shots with fat burner). I never felt better than when I was on the shots. I had more energy and I was so proud of myself for not drinking alcohol (which I love to consume every weekend) & being able to stick with such a strict diet. I found that food tastes great and doesn't need to be slathered with butter and sauces! The trick is to get inventive with your cooking (I love to cook so it was easy). In (4) months I kept 30 of my 35 lbs. off. I am now on the 26 day protocol, day 3 of the 500 calorie diet (after the 2 wonderful days of loading) & I have lost 5.2 lbs. so far. I'm someone who was looking at losing 100 lbs. +. What a difference 35 lbs. made and what I lose this time will make my weight loss goal 1/2 of what it was. All that weight loss in less than 4 months(when you add the round together)! That is very encouraging and very helpful! Lastly, the diet taught me to eat right and to eat better and to be aware of everything that I put in my mouth! I'm shocked by how sugar is in almost everything! Anyhow, I'm a firm believer in HCG and I am so glad I did it. I will say that I always do doctor supervised and I got my initial blood work done to make sure I could safely do the diet. I highly recommend you seeing a doctor for at least your 1st round. Good luck to all that decide to take this wonderous journey! posted Sep 9th, 2009 11:59 pm

Like almost everyone else I too am using the hcg diet. Lost 25 lbs in 40 days with no adverse side effects. Motivated because of the 5 1/2 inches from waist, with 0 inches lost on biceps or thighs; seems to be all from my fat tummy. Not hungry on 500 cal! Craved some before bedtime, but not bad. Cheated a little on the diet, but not much. Going for another 25 lbs after 3 weeks. Did under Dr. supervision with weekly checkups. Was able to stop both pills being taken for high blood pressure. My wife is a RN and the MD she works with is doing it. My sister is doing it, she is a PA and her daughter an MD. posted Sep 8th, 2009 3:13 am

The hCG Protocol is a doctor prescribed weight loss program, designed by a doctor. Given that information, we know that there has to be a lot of MD's and ND's that are prescribing hCG for weight loss, because there is a enormous amount of individuals who are following the hCG diet.

As of this date, there have been no reported deaths due to the hCG Diet Protocol, period; whether the person was following the diet or not.

Yet, there seems to be a lot of 'guru's' out there that know everything about the diet, yet they have never spoken with a person who has actually followed the diet protocol.

Here is what they are missing when it comes to the calories. In order to lose weight, a person must reduce calories, right? That is because we are trying to force the body into burning those calories from fat, right? YES. If the dieter is succesful, then the weight is lost, right?

Then the question is, how many calories did that person have?

The amount of calories that person had was the amount of calories that were ingested PLUS the amount of calories burned from fat-stores. That means the person may have been enjoying the same amount of calories, yet they were eating less.

It is the same with hCG. If a person loses 1 lb a day consistently for 2 weeks, that is an extra 3500 calories that the body is getting from fat. Add the 500 calories, and the person is getting 4000 calories. That is why the hunger mechanism is turned off. The hypoithalamus regulates fat storage, body temprature, HUNGER, and functions to support the Pituitary and the Thyroid.

The hCG Diet is NOT a starvation diet. If it was, Dieters would be complaining of hunger, irritability, headaches, weakness, and much more.

After starting over 800 patients on the hCG program, this has not been a problem, and it is amazing to me still. posted Sep 4th, 2009 10:32 pm

Its funny that you can find so many articles about how hCG is bad, and every response you get from those who actually did the diet tell you different.

Of course hCG balances the endocrine system; look at how bodybuilders have used it for such a long time.

If you have something to pick with people who have an enormous amount of weight to lose, stop telling them its easy. I was a personal trainer, I have worked in the fitness industry my whole life, I now work as a Doctors Assistant, and I know that it isnt as easy as just eating less. When a person has over 100 lbs to lose, there are almost ALWAYS other problems that dont go away right away. Also,if they start working out at that heavy weight, they will often gain weight due to the stress they are placing on their body.

Others haver already pointed out how if you dont eat enough, your body will lose weight, adn compared it to Africa. Give me a break; after burning off all of your lean body mass.

Thats the problem. What do you think would happen if all of a sudden you started feeding all of those starving people in africa 3 large meals a day. Yep, thats right, they would blow up. posted Sep 4th, 2009 10:14 pm

OMG...as a person who has done fertility treatments I can guarntee there are side effects of injected or swallowing synthetic hormones. Some mild, some major. Though the FDA isn;t the best source for information, since they also have problems with people taking vitamin c..which I think we can all agree is harmless, there are many other sites which the author gets info from. Anyone can loss weight from eating 500 calories a day, this is not brain surgery people, however the idea that HCG resets your metabolism is ludacris. If that was the case many women would have no problem shedding pounds after pregnancy. If you want to be thin...STOP EATING. People in Africa are skinny because they DON'T EAT. These comments are great. I am a insulin dependent diabetic and I can tell you it's hard to lose weight. The insulin stores itself in body fat and makes it very difficult to lose the weight. However, with this protocol I used less insulin because the insulin which is stored in my body fat releases itself resulting in a decreased need for insulin. One of the benefits is saving money on insulin and supplies. This is another reason the FDA probably hates this protocol. Do you realize how expensive insulin and supplies are?!! This protocol does work and the only side effect I have is a headache. Just imagine how many diabetics this protocol can help. My doctor recommended it to me because I was having difficulty losing weight. I would exercise 4 times a week for at least an hour and my diet was great but the insulin does make it difficult to lose weight. HCG works. posted Aug 25th, 2009 2:07 pm

HCG for weightloss, was a godsend for me! I gained 40 pounds as a result of pregnancy, fertility drugs, and breast feeding, and my body, despite eating healthy, exercising, etc, would not shed the weight. I lost all the weight with HCG, and it was the easiest thing I've ever done. Not only that, but the fat melts off your problem areas. After you get off the protocol, you'll find that your body has reset and eventually, you can go back to eating normally after the protocol is done. I experienced no side effects, except euphoria the first week.

Like ANY detox protocol, here is where the problems comes in, but if you do what you are supposed to do they are not problems at all.

1) After being on a such a low calorie diet, you do not have an appetite anymore. You will find that you lose your taste for sweets, junk food, and typically all the bad stuff. People with no appetite are in danger of being mal nourished.

Thats what happened to me. I got so used to only eating lettuce, cabbage, and protein, etc.. that my body actually forgot how to metabolize carbs. I ended losing a lot of muscle mass, and despite the fact that I was skinny, and the same inche measurements as before, my body was still pretty flabby.

so what is important is to do and follow the protocol, and to slowly add carbs back, as your body may have developed new sensitivies.

The other bad thing, by being in starvation mode, your body is now open to more diseases. When you do gain weight on this protocal, the weight goes toward "structural" fat, which is the fat the surrounds your organs. Fat in problem areas may not LOOK attractive, but its definitely a healthier place for fat to be stored. So what a lot of people do, when they do gain weight, they go back on the protocal. This is a mistake. Each time you do the protocal you get weaker and weaker and kill your body. It is not long term solution, but a solution in which it is designed for you to get on, and then get off.

the problem is, just like any other type of habit, when you start down a path, you do not notice the bad side effects. Like I developed a habit of starving myself.

to help me get my body back on track, I've slowly developed a fat loss routine, to get rid of my new visceral fat, and building the muscle that I lost.

But I am still ahead of the game, than had I not done the HCG protocal at all. I look great, at least in my clothes, and now I am working on getting buff again. posted Aug 25th, 2009 1:09 pm

Both my mom and I have done HCG and had amazing results with it. I lost over 22 pounds in several weeks, and I have never had these results with diet or exercise (or anything else short of surgery for that matter- trust me I've tried it all).

I have tried to restrict my calories to 500 in the past without HCG (onviously not advised but I'm in the entertainment industry and have to lose weight quickly sometimes). Just by restricting my calorie intake to 500, there is no way I would lose a pound a day, or even close. Even on HCG, you can take the injections and eat only 200 calories of the wrong food (sugar, starches, fats)and not lose weight. You have to adhere **very** stricly to the diet or it won't work. That's why the studies that say it's ineffective, they are FLAWED. HCG acts as a safety net for pregnant women, so if their caloric intake gets too low, 2,500 calories a day are released into the body from excess fat stores. That's how you lose weight. It's not just 500 calories, because how could all these people do that successfully and still be happy and have any energy?

HCG injections *alone* will not make you lose weight, that's why pregnant women don't lose weight during pregnancy.

HCG Injections and a 500 calorie diet *alone* will make you lose a little weight temporarily due to the caloric intake reduction.

HCG Injections *and* Dr. Simeons rigid and specific diet will cause your body to release 2,500 calories a day from excess fat stores (not structural fat).

People that say HCG doesn't work **clearly** haven't tried it. No, it's not a magic injection, because the diet is still hard work, and it's easy to mess up just going out and eating the wrong thing.

I work at a place that does it in Tampa, Raydiance Wellness, and the number is (813)258-0458. There is a weekly weigh in and you are fully supported through every step. It's MD supervised, and they have lots of other things to help support you in making life changes and fixing what made you fat in the first place.

This is a link to a *properly* conducted double blind study on HCG.
