Previously known for her curvy figure, the 59-year-old entertainer has been stepping out lately with a much slimmer silhouette, including a performance at an arts education benefit performance at the Kennedy Center Spring Gala in Washington, D.C. on May 6, and an appearance at the Red Dress Gala for women’s heart health. At both events Chaka donned curve-hugging ensembles that showed off her recent weight loss, and it appears she’s looking nearly half her previous size.
Although the star has not yet publicly attributed her 60-pound weight loss to any one program or regimen, we can assume that she achieved it through hard work and by implementing healthy lifestyle changes.
Chaka had previously admitted that she struggled with alcohol and drug use for years. At a performance earlier this month she opened up and shared her testimony with audience members, including the many desperate pleas from her daughter and mother that eventually put her on the the road to recovery.
In addition to battling drug and alcohol abuse, Chaka also struggled her weight, falling into a pattern of unhealthy choices that eventually led her to be diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. However, in effort to get her life back in the face of many serious health issues, Chaka committed herself to diet and lifestyle changes to lose the weight.
She’s not only looking great, but also now reportedly free of her diabetes and high blood pressure, proving she’s well not her way to complete recovery. This just goes to show how it’s never too late to make changes for better health, and how quickly the body can respond when we make those changes.
The real news isn’t just that a celebrity gained or dropped weight, it’s that someone who has struggled with substance abuse and their weight for the better part of 30 years, made a choice to change that. And at the age of almost 60, she achieved it – and we find that inspirational. We congratulate Chaka on her weight loss and wish her all the best on her continued road to recovery and health.
