Since I work at home, I can eat whatever I want. That can be a mixed blessing, because it makes it very easy to graze from the fridge all day long.
I sometimes have a tough time eating the right things, which is why I was so excited when I discovered Healthy Choice frozen meals. It makes the lunch prep a no-brainer – just pull something out of the freezer, microwave it, and have a delicious lunch in no time at all. I wondered, though, if the meals were actually healthy. Happily, I discovered that indeed they were.
Healthy Choice has created a line of foods that is the only brand in its category that can call 100 percent of its products “healthy” as approved by the FDA. Their literature states: This is not diet food. It’s great food made with healthy ingredients right from the start.
With meals that are low in fat and saturated fat, with controlled sodium and cholesterol, and 10 percent of the daily value for three beneficial nutrients (calcium, protein and iron), you might expect that the meals would taste like twigs. So, I sampled a selection of meals that the Healthy Choice people provided me.
Tortellini Primavera Parmesan was a favorite of mine. I love pasta in any shape and form and could happily eat it for every meal – but there’s that pesky portion control issue. By choosing this meal, I was able to enjoy the pasta and tomato sauce with small vegetable pieces. The meal wasn’t quite enough to fill me, but by pairing it with a salad, I felt full and satisfied.
Lemon Garlic Chicken and Shrimp contained several large chunks of white meat chicken and my meal had five large shrimp. The lemon and garlic sauce was seasoned correctly and not overpowering, and there was an ample amount of vegetables. This was a steamer meal, and it was one I would purchase again.
Pineapple Chicken was moist and delicious, with a nice tang to the sauce. The chicken was white meat and tender and the pineapple chunks were large enough to impact the flavor, but not overwhelmingly. The only thing I didn’t like about this meal was the whole grain rice. I’m a huge fan of brown rice and prefer that flavor, so I found this not as appealing. The rest of the meal was yummy.
Spicy Caribbean Chicken was my husband’s favorite. He loves jerk flavor and said that the sauce was well seasoned and ample enough for the chicken pieces and vegetables, which in this meal included black beans and corn.
With these meals in my freezer, I can feel confident that I can prepare a quick healthy meal that won’t ruin the diet or the pocketbook.
