Taco Bell MexiMelt

Worst Foods at Taco Bell

The MexiMelt from Taco Bell may look very appealing, but this product contains a very controversial ingredient that many should be informed of.

Sodium Benzoate is a common food preservative in a white powder form. This chemical compound is deemed safe by the FDA, however, in the presence of vitamin C the chemical benzene can be formed. Benzene is known to damage DNA and genetic material, which may lead to certain cancers such as leukemia.

Further research is currently being done to determine the effects of sodium benzoate as a food preservative. Although this menu item may not contain vitamin C, check out food facts for other menu items to make sure your meal does not potentially contain benzene.
