Angela Ruggiero

Olympic Athlete Spotlight

Angela Ruggiero is no stranger to breaking stereotypes. She was the first female defenseman in the Central Hockey League and she was also the first woman non-goalie to play professional men’s hockey in North America. She also appeared in the sixth season of "The Apprentice" on NBC. Even though Ruggiero has a pretty healthy diet as a professional athlete, her performance nutritionist encourages her to eat "three for three," a system that requires each meal or snack to contain three key components: a complex carbohydrate, lean protein and a healthy fat. Her favorite pre-workout snack is a whole-grain bagel with peanut butter, bananas or Lara Bars. Her fave post-workout snack is chocolate milk, trail mix or fruit blended in a protein shake; and her favorite indulgent food is ice cream. Moderation is key when it comes to the creamy stuff as Ruggiero limits herself to just one pint per month. Did you know that Ruggiero graduated Cum Laude from Harvard University with a B.A. and is currently enrolled at the University of Minnesota, pursuing a master’s degree in sports management.
