Yoga vs. Pilates

Fitness Comparisons

You're looking for a workout that will improve not only your strength, but will also give you better balance and increased flexibility. Pilates and yoga can provide you with all these things, but they are also quite distinct. Both can be challenging and both take some time to master.

Yoga is an ancient practice that is practiced in many forms today. The only really essential piece of equipment is a mat, although some classes will also make use of blocks, straps and blankets or pillows. Some yoga classes incorporate spiritual aspects, such as chanting and meditation.

Comparatively, Pilates is a new form of exercise. It was developed in the first half of the 20th century by Joseph Pilates, for whom the practice is named. It's is focused on helping people strengthen their core. Like yoga, Pilates can be practiced simply with a mat, but there are also a number of pieces of equipment that may be used, such as the Pilates Reformer, the Pilates chair or the Pilates Ped-o-Pull.
