Choose MyPlate

Protein should take up a little less than a quarter of your plate, but be sure not to skip it. Below is the amount of protein adults should eat daily, depending on gender and age:

  • Women 19 to 30: 5 1/2 ounce equivalents
  • Women 31 and older: 5 ounce equivalents
  • Men 19 to 30: 6 1/2 ounce equivalents
  • Men 31 to 50: 6 ounce equivalents
  • Men 51 and older: 5 1/2 ounce equivalents

An ounce equivalent is typically an ounce of meat or fish. One ounce of seeds or nuts is about two ounce equivalents. A small, lean hamburger has two to three ounce equivalents. A soy or bean burger patty has two ounce equivalents. A small chicken breast half has three ounce equivalents.
