DIR: When you’re just not feeling up for a workout, or surfing, what helps you convince yourself to do it anyway?

Bethany: I’ve been around the ocean all my life and have had a passion for surfing ever since I can remember. After my shark attack, I feared that I might not be able to surf again with only one arm. I had to be creative and stay focused on regaining my strength and level of surfing to make it back on the surfing circuit—and by working twice as hard. I was back in the water less than one month after my accident and eventually reached my goal of turning pro.

If there’s ever a time that I’m not 100 percent up for a workout, I like to change it up and vary my workouts to make it more fun. I’ll go on a challenging hike with my dog, do a long open ocean swim with friends, play tennis, ride my bike, or whatever comes to mind at the moment! Regarding surfing, I love it! I don’t think I would ever need to convince myself to get out in the water!
