Bethany Hamilton's Healthy Lifestyle

DIR: As a professional surfer, what do your workouts look like to keep you fit enough to compete?

Bethany: Outside of the water, I do quite a bit of cross-training to stay in shape and work with my trainer Dustin Dillberg to keep my body strong and my spine aligned. I typically train 2-3x a week with a TRX Suspension Trainer to develop strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously; it’s rad and I love it! I also like to run on the beach and take my dog on hikes.

When the waves are good, I can spend anywhere from two to eight hours surfing. My in-water competition training typically involves swimming practice with a focus on kicking. I mostly work on kicking because I don’t like to over-use my arm, and kicking is a really important factor for me to be able to catch waves.

I’m a very active person in general so when I’m not surfing or training I love playing tennis, swimming as well as hiking, biking and my latest favorite is volleyball with my friends and family.
