A History of Nutrition in Images

In June of 2011, The USDA and First Lady Michelle Obama introduced MyPlate. The new icon was intended to be a simplified guide to good nutrition in light of the nation's obesity epidemic. A plate and cup represent portion sizes for each meal, and the image divides foods into five basic groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy.

Fruits and vegetables appear much more important in the MyPlate graphic than in the previous two pyramid images, while grains are de-emphasized.

Interesting that milk and butter were once given separate categories and now dairy has been banished to some sort of side plate or saucer.
