Best Hot Dog Brands

2012 Food Awards

It’s summer time and coming along with it is BBQs and baseball games full of amazing hot dogs. Also in the midst of summer is bikini season. You love your hot dogs but you’re trying to decrease your figure with proper nutrients, not add to it. So what’s the best hot dog out there? We searched for the top five hot dogs with the following criteria: We measured by 75 g raw.

Nutrition Criteria

< 130 calories, zero trans fat, no more than 45% of calories from fat, < 1.5g of saturated fat (or < 15% of total calories), < 480 mg of sodium, at least 10% of the daily value for one or more: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron, Calcium, and no nitrates.

Contenders

  1. Yves Good Dog: If we were handing out second place this would have taken it. Its loss came from the 42% of calories from fat.

  2. HoneySuckle White Lean Italian Sausage: This didn't make the cut as the winner due to its calories from fat of 50%.

  3. Oscar Mayer Lite Classic Beef Franks: These may have had one of the lower sodium levels, however its fat calories were at a whopping 66%.

  4. Hillshire Farm Turkey Pepper Jack Sausage: These contained the highest sodium levels with 560mg per serving, well above our criteria.
