What's the best way to fuel early morning workouts?

Jen V. asked this question Apr 10th, 2012 1:59 pm

I work out first thing in the morning. Usually beginning about 20 minutes after waking up so I don't have time for food pre-workout other than a cup of coffee w/ sugar and milk (roughly 35 calories, 15g. carb). After my workout I eat breakfast, usually a bowl of Kashi GoLean Crunch with berries and milk. Am I making a mistake by not having a better pre-workout snack? My workouts last around 45 minutes and are either cardio or strength. Since I have a 45-min. commute I only have a limited amount of time in the morning and no time later in the day to fit in a work out on a regular basis. I've heard that early AM workouts without breakfast burn muscle, not fat so I'm a little concerned, even though I DO eat breakfast, just not beforehand...I do notice I have more power and endurance when I work out on the weekends after I've eaten so I know there is a difference. Please let me know if I should alter my routine, or if I'm on track as is. Thanks!
