When performing a classic crunch, it’s best to rest your hands behind the head with the elbows bent. Knees are bent with the heels inline with the sit bones. As you lift your head, neck, and shoulders off the floor, exhale and draw your abs towards the spine to activate the deep abdominal muscles. It does take practice but after a while it will come second nature. Remember if you don’t breathe the deep abdominals to do not activate which are responsible for making your abs flat.
