Can you lose weight without counting calories/points OR only eating from a restricted food list?

I have been trying to lose weight for months with NO success. I cannot seem to stick to anything. I need the freedom to be able to split a pizza at California Pizza Kitchen (even if it means only eating 1/4 of it with soup or salad and having the other quarter with lunch the next day), and indulge in my weekly milkshake or Frappucino... or order Cheesecake pancakes at IHOP.

Yet, I cannot stick to counting calories. I love plans like South Beach and Paleo that allow you to eat without measuring and counting every little calorie, but I also know that calorie counting gives me more freedom to indulge in treats that are forbidden on many of these plans (pizza, pancakes, desserts, french fries, full-fat dairy).
