True Fitness Involves the Mind, Body and Spirit

Dennis Grounds is a personal trainer and life coach, and creator of Training Grounds for Life. One of the most sought after trainers in LA. Grounds combines cardio circuit, functional and core training, Pilates and certified life coaching. Training Grounds for Life is an exclusive, luxury studio in the heart of Los Angeles where Grounds gets to the “core” of the matter, helping clients strengthen the core of their bodies as well as the core of their minds.

Achieving optimal health and wellness is not just about the physical body. Dennis Grounds, certified professional life coach, personal trainer and founder of LA’s Training Grounds for Life, says optimal health is about finding the balance between your mind, body and soul. Grounds weighs in on why one must focus on their mental and spiritual health to get the best physical results.

First, let’s distinguish the role of the body. The body is the physical representation of your energy, your soul, and your true self here on earth. Our bodies are the tools for soul growth.

The mind will tell us that we are not enough, that we can’t do it, we’re too fat, too skinny, etc. Its job is to analyze, figure out, question, and doubt ourselves. If we listen to our mind and act according to it, our physical body/health will end up in “dis-ease.” (more…)

How to Start a Healthy Living Blog

Guest blogger, Jennette Fulda

Guest blogger Jennette Fulda is the author of “Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir,” which chronicles her 200 pound weight loss, as well as the forthcoming “Chocolate and Vicodin: My quest for relief from the headache that wouldn’t go away.” She blogs at PastaQueen and designs web sites at Make My Blog Pretty.

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you’ve probably tried the usual tricks like eating less and moving more, but have you tried blogging?

Typing doesn’t burn many calories, but blogging can provide accountability and support, which are a helpful part of any weight-loss plan.

Here are some tips for how to become involved in the healthy living blogosphere:

1) Lurk before you blog.

Start by reading other healthy living blogs. Not only are they inspirational, they’ll give you a sense of what you’d like your own blog to be like. Some bloggers give detailed accounts of their diet and exercise plans, while others delve into emotional eating. Foodies like to take photos of their healthy meals and often share recipes. You can find a directory of healthy living bloggers at sites like Blog To Lose or Fat Fighter Blogs, though the latter hasn’t been updated recently. Most blogs feature a blogroll, which is a list of other blogs they recommend, which can send you clicking for hours.

Dr. Michael Roizen Interview: Survey Says Patients and Doctors Not Connecting on Healthy Living

Are you a picture of health? Many Americans these days think they are healthier than they really are, according to a recent survey by GE and the Cleveland Clinic. I had a chance to chat with acclaimed physician, author, and “Real Age” expert Dr. Michael Roizen. He is the Chief Wellness Officer at Cleveland Clinic, in addition to being the co-author of YOU: On a Diet and subsequent books in the series.

In our conversation, Dr. Roizen explains the surprising outcomes of the “GE Better Health Study” survey, which asked  more than 2,000 Americans age 18 and older, and more than 1,200 physicians, nurses, pharmacists and dietitians about their healthy living attitudes, behaviors and barriers, as well as the state of the doctor/patient relationship. We share those results below.

Listen now to my interview with Dr. Michael Roizen.

Lose Weight With a Kitchen Spring Cleaning

For many of us, it has been a long snowy slog this winter. But the end is near, and spring is just around the corner. While it may not match the annual New Year’s resolution everyone makes, spring is also a time of renewal. The scent of flowers begins to fill the air, and we start shedding our layers of clothing… which reminds us that by hibernating for the winter, we now have a few extra unwanted pounds.

Do you have some extra weight that you need to shed before bathing suit season arrives? Then, it’s time to do some spring cleaning in your kitchen. Here are five ways that will shape up your eating habits, and your waistline:

1. Grocery Shop Wisely

If it’s not in your kitchen, you won’t eat it. That may be a simple mantra, but its importance is profound. If you are even the least bit weak when buying snack foods, don’t shop for food when you are hungry. Better yet, go grocery shopping right after a meal. That may be a little difficult – who wants to grocery shop at 7 p.m. after a long day of work? But if you can do it, you may cut thousand of calories a month. (more…)

6 Tips to Kick-Start a Healthy Lifestyle from the Biggest Loser Resort

In light of National Registered Dietitian Day, we welcome Emily Fonnesbeck to share some insights on ways to start living a healthier life. Emily is the Registered Dietitian for the Biggest Loser Resort.

January does not have to be the only time to create resolutions. I don’t think you ever need to wait until a calendar date to make changes. If you are really committed, you will start today. Here are some tips to kick-start a healthy lifestyle:

1.  Start small.  You may want to run a marathon eventually, but a 5K might be a better place to start. Make realistic goals that will be achievable in the short term. This will allow you to see results quickly and will keep you committed to long term goals.

2. Fit your goals to fit your lifestyle.  If you travel a lot, it might not be realistic to say you won’t eat out anymore. If you like ice cream, you probably won’t give it up. Be sure to take your lifestyle into account when making your goals. (more…)

5 Healthy Habits to Start on Spring Break

“Nothing changes until you do.” This is probably one of my favorite sayings. If you have ever complained about not eating healthy enough, working too much, not having enough time for exercise, or not taking care of yourself the way you should then you have probably spent some time wishing things could change. Here are five ideas to help get you started and make more productive use of your spring break.

1. Take time to plan. Without a plan, you’re stuck with good intentions that you can’t execute. If you have extra time over spring break, do some personal reflection and goal setting. Think about one behavior at a time. What would you like to change about nutrition? Write it down. Continue this until you have a list of changes that have been on your mind. Which few do you believe are the most important behaviors to change and easiest to change? Start there. Be consistent. Don’t think about how far you have to go, think about what you will do today to work on that change. Here are a couple examples: I will eat two whole fruits a day. I will not snack in front of the TV or computer. (more…)

Trump New York Debuts Kids Fitness Programs

trump kids fitnessI rarely travel with my children, but when I do, I’m often left looking for something for them to “do,” an activity to allow them to get moving and be active, a way to enjoy some exercise and fitness and avoiding sitting in the room watching cruddy television. When I travel, I always find the gym and take advantage of all the activities, so why shouldn’t my kids have the same options?

If I was lucky enough to be able to stay at Trump Towers New York, I think I’d be one of the first to take advantage of their newest exercise program geared toward kids ages six and up. After all, getting kids moving should be a primary focus for all of us, for creating good habits that will last a life time. (more…)

They say opposites attract, however, this can sometimes lead to undesirable results. You may want to get up and go to the gym, but you stay on the couch because your partner wants you to watch another episode of your favorite TV show. When out to dinner, you know the grilled chicken and mixed veggies is a healthier option, but you are encouraged to order the pasta with cream sauce because you need to “live a little.”

Olympian Tanith Belbin Benefits from Weight Gain

tanith belbinI lost a lot of weight. Eighty pounds, to be precise. It took me a long time to accomplish, but when I was finally finished, the funniest thing happened. People told me that I was too thin. I scoffed. As if one could ever been too thin, I thought. Don’t they know how hard I’ve worked, and all I ever wanted was to be skinny? I continued to work out twice a day, often to the point of exhaustion, and it wasn’t until I fell asleep at a stop light on the way to martial arts that I realized that maybe, the naysayers might have had a point. Now that I’ve gained back a few pounds, I’ve noticed I run faster and longer, lift heavier weights, and in general, feel better.

Olympian Tanith Belbin has had a similar revelation. If you are a fan of ice dancing, you may have noticed that the skater has gained a little bit of weight – ten pounds, to be precise. A silver medal winner in the 2006 Olympics, Belbin switched coaches in 2024 and the first recommendation for the skater was to gain weight. She was not convinced, though, and realized that her hesitancy was rooted in problems with eating. She said, “I swear, I’m not eating anything and I’m exhausted and cranky and stressed and all of those things that make you gain weight even more.” (more…)
