Medifast Diet vs. Nutrisystem Diet

Medifast and NutriSystem are two of the most popular meal delivery diets on the market today. Both provide you with pre-portioned, calorie controlled meals and snacks that take most of the guess work out of preparing a healthy diet for around the same price. So which diet is right for you? We take a look at the similarities, and a few differences, between these successful diets.

Overview

Medifast is a home meal delivery service that provides you with portion controlled, high protein meals. Named #7 on the list of the Best Commercial Diets by US News in 2024, Medifast claims dieters can lose up to 20 pounds in their first month. The success of the Medifast program has been proven in multiple clinical studies, including a Johns Hopkins study that found Medifast helps dieters lose weight quickly and safely, and helped type 2 diabetics lose twice as much weight as those following the American Diabetes Association’s dietary recommendations. Medifast also showed improvements in those with hypertension and high cholesterol.

NutriSystem is also a meal delivery service that provides meals and snacks that are calorie-controlled and pre-prepared, only requiring you to supplement in a few fresh foods. NutriSystem meals are available in both shelf-stable options and their fresh-frozen line of meals.

NFL Quarterback Alex Smith’s Diet and Fitness Regimen

Alex Smith has been all over the news lately as he’s left the San Francisco 49ers, become a free agent, and is reportedly on the verge of signing with the Miami Dolphins. And that got us thinking. Who is Alex Smith, what’s his diet, and how does he stay in prime athlete shape? We did some investigating.

For starters, Alex Smith is a quarterback who stole much attention as the number one overall NFL draft pick in 2005. And although he didn’t turn heads early in his career, he threw for more than 3,000 yards and 17 touchdowns last season with virtually no interceptions, going 13-3.

So we get it. He’s a big deal. But what does the man eat? Several years ago during an appearance on Jay Leno’s The Tonight Show, Smith talked a lot about his diet, saying he eats “as much and as many things as possible.” And he’s probably right since the average athlete can consume anywhere from 3,000 – 5,000 calories a day. Unless he’s training like Michael Phelps, in which case he’s taking in nearly 12,000 calories. (more…)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During this month, there is an added push to make people aware of this devastating disease and help them learn all they can as we all fight to end it forever. As research is being done everyday, we can’t wait to hear when the eventual cure is found. Until then, prevention and education are our strongest weapons.

How the New Charlie’s Angels Keep Fit and Trim

With every fall season comes an onslaught of new television shows that hope to gain your interest as a viewer. One of the most anticipated shows is a remake of an old television classic, Charlie’s Angels.

When looking at a show like this, one can’t help but wonder what the stars do to stay fit. The new version of the show stars Minka Kelly, Rachael Taylor and Annie Ilonzeh and is based in Miami. Each of the characters has a back story that includes a lifestyle of physical fitness, so it’s only fitting to look at what the actresses that play them do to stay in shape.

Minka Kelly often speaks about her fitness regimen. She trains with celebrity personal trainer Gunnar Peterson. She recently revved up her fitness routine specifically for this role. One of her fitness secrets is standing ab work using weights. Her workouts include helpful toning exercises with weights that work the entire body and puts in time on the treadmill doing an interval running routine to get her heart pumping. As far as nutrition goes, Minka tries to eat a sensible diet that includes egg whites and oatmeal for breakfast, a salad with protein for lunch and fish and veggies for dinner. Since she believes you should not deprive yourself, once in a while Minka will indulge in a cheeseburger with fries.

Weight Watchers Not Designed for Type 2 Diabetics

Those suffering from type 2 diabetes are often looking for a healthy plan that can help them lose weight and manage their diabetes at the same time.

While Weight Watchers is one of the most popular diet programs available, it is not designed for those with diabetes. Weight Watchers has been around for over 40 years, and the program embraces several principles of healthy living. However, because the program is not for diabetics, you should seek advice from your health care professional for adaptations that can be made to the program.

One thing that can make Weight Watchers somewhat difficult to follow for those with type 2 diabetes is the fact that you cannot convert the PointsPlus system into diabetes exchanges or grams of carbohydrates. Another is that Weight Watchers recommends those with diabetes choose foods with a low glycemic index. If you choose to follow a low GI diet, you really have no need for the Weight Watchers PointsPlus plan.

Weight Watchers Lifetime Membership Rewards Successful Dieters for Reaching Their Weight Loss Goals

Weight Watchers is a tried and true weight loss program that has been around for over 40 years. It was recently named the number one commercial diet by U.S. News for 2024. You can’t watch TV, flip through a magazine or drive past a few billboards without seeing an ad for the program.

For those that have successfully reached their weight loss goals with Weight Watchers, there is the opportunity to earn a Lifetime Membership to the program. Although Weight Watchers offers membership options through physical meetings or online, the Lifetime Membership is only available for members that attended Weight Watchers Meetings.

The first step of earning a Lifetime Membership is to achieve a goal weight within the Weight Watchers healthy weight ranges that is at least five pounds less than your initial weight recorded from your first meeting. For your healthy weight range, you can also use a weight that is determined by your doctor. After you have maintained this weight within two pounds for six continual paid meeting weeks, you are awarded a Lifetime Membership.

You must also weigh in at least two times between your goal weigh in and your final maintenance weigh in. You will also need to be within two pounds of your goal weight at your final maintenance weigh in.

Can You Follow the Baby Food Diet in a Healthy Way?

The Baby Food Diet has taken Hollywood by storm but as more Americans who want to lose weight are jumping on the jarred, pureed food bandwagon, nutrition experts and parents are questioning whether the diet is safe and effective.
