What is it?

Myotein is a meal replacement shake made with high amounts of time-released protein for those looking for quick exercise recovery.  It claims to be made only with high quality ingredients, which they claim other brands fail to offer.

Unlike other products, they add that theirs is made without fillers, binders, and preservatives. Results are said to come within 3 days, although this can vary with the kinds of workouts used. The benefits are said to be increased metabolism, reduced hunger cravings, and overall body fat loss. Are any of these claims actually true? What’s the surprising truth about this brand? This review will help you understand the truth of Myotein.

Myotein Ingredients and Side Effects

Both chocolate, vanilla, and a mixture of both are offered, here’s the ingredients to their vanilla:

Whey Protein Isolate Whey Protein Concentrate Micellar Casein Whey protein Hydrolysate
L-Glutamine Colostrum Guar Gum Lactase
Sunflower Creamer Lecithin Sucralose Aminogen
Mucuna Pruriens Forslean 20-Hydroxyecdysterone Natural Flavors
Artificial Flavors

Whey Protein Isolate and Concentrate: A form of protein extracted from the cheese making process. It’s an effective protein since it’s easy to digest and useful for lean muscle building.

It’s considered one of the best protein extracts since it’s well balanced and has a full amino acid profile. This ensures the body has what it needs when replacing a full meal.

Guar Gum: Extracts of the guar plant that are often added to processed foods as a thickener. It’s known to increase in size once in the stomach, and its intended benefits are a sense of fullness.

Though it’s also possible for it to lead to numerous side effects:

  • Loose stools, watery stools, and diarrhea.
  • Increased gas and flatulence.
  • Increased bathroom usage.
  • Blockages in the throat, esophagus, and intestines.

It’s advised to always take this with fluids in order to prevent the possibility of choking. Often 8 ounces of water are recommended with a serving.

Lactase: Enzyme used to help lactose intolerant people digest dairy properly.

Sucralose: An artificial sweetener that is not broken down by the body. It has no calories and is most commonly referred to by its brand name Splenda.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest downgraded this ingredients safety to “Caution”, after studies showed it to be potentially dangerous.

The Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health published one such study. They mention that sucralose:

“exerted numerous adverse effects”

“reduction in beneficial fecal microflora, increased fecal pH, and enhanced expression levels of P-gp”

So this means it could potentially cause damage to the immune system. The body only releases p-gp when there are fears of a contaminant. So this means the human body treats sucralose as a potentially dangerous ingredient.

Mucura Pruriens: A legume that is commonly known as velvet bean. This ingredient has to be handled cautiously, as it can lead to extreme itchiness.

It’s used to improve the rate of dopamine that improves mood in the brain. It’s known that this effect isn’t likely, as it does not pass the blood brain barrier to have any effect.

Possible side effects are many and include:

  • Agitation, confusion, and hallucinations.
  • Nausea and a sense of bloating.
  • Insomnia and restlessness.
  • Vomiting and feelings of discomfort.

Depending on whether the pods are used, this ingredient can also have serious potential side effects such as extreme burning and swelling.

20-Hydroxyecdysterone: A hormone used to help grow arthropods such as butterflies and shrimp.  Examine.com has confirmed the lack of information about this ingredient:

“Human interventions are lacking and problems with ecdysteroid ingestion exists”

So it’s unknown if this would have any benefit to humans. It has been shown to not be properly used by the body.

Artificial Flavor: A man made ingredients that’s made in a lab. It can be extracted from many different sources, and it’s unknown if it’s made with safe ingredients.

Manufactures are not legally obliged to have to list how they make their own artificial ingredients, so it’s unknown if this ingredient might act as an allergen.

Myotein Quality Of Ingredients

myoteinMyotein took an untraditional route by adding a mixture of ingredients that are often added to weight loss supplements.  This includes ingredients that are lacking much science or benefit of usage.

Side effects are possible from some of the ingredients as well. Customers of Myotein have also listed these effects.

Though they do use a quality protein source in whey isolate and concentrate, the other added ingredients are meant to provide a metabolism boost that can potentially cause complications. This can potentially increase the risk for unwanted side effects.

The Price and Quality of Myotein

One 27 serving container costs $59.99, though this comes with a pricy $9.95 shipping cost.

This brand has a lot of ingredients added though they fail to mention the amino acid profile. It’s unknown how good the protein is, and whether or not it mostly comes from a good source like whey.

Many other protein strains are added to this as well as an amino acid.  Usually, a protein formula does not require extra amino acids unless the quality of whey is either poor, or added in small numbers.

Also, ingredients like guar gum, mucura pruriens and 20-hydroxyecdysterone are either potentially side effect causing, or they’ve yet to be thoroughly tested. This raises the overall cost of this shake unnecessarily.

These ingredients lack much evidence for safety or effectiveness.

Business of Myotein

XPI Supplements makes this brand and they can be found via the following contact details:

Very little information about the companies practices exist on their own website. They mostly talk about the benefits of Myotein without evidence to back it up.

They currently have a very poor rating of a D- on the Better Business Bureau website, which is an independent site that helps track overall customer satisfaction.

Here’s what customers have had to say about the companies practices:

“I have not received my shipment order”

“I have made numerous attempts to request status or to resolve this issue”

“no refund is granted”

“misleading practices”

Customers mention how they were fooled by the amounts of supplements they were to be given. Also, there’s claims that the company is difficult to deal with, and that they fail to offer money back return.

The manufacturers claim to offer a return of Myotein within 30 days as long as you return the empty container. Though customers haven’t had much success with this.

A D- rating is exceptionally low and shows that many customers have not been satisfied.

Customer Opinions of Myotein

There’s many reviews available online. Here’s what people have had to say about Myotein:

“One of the better tasting shakes but caused elevated results for my liver…. soon as I stopped using this my test results were back to normal”

“I saw no increase in anything related to performance and/or muscle mass”

“Not worth the price”

“don’t feel like its working because I’m not any stronger and my recovery is twice as long”

People felt that this brand was greatly overpriced for the lack of benefits given. There were also complaints about side effects. This included people experiencing elevated levels in their blood work, which was stopped as soon as the quit taking Myotein.

Though people did rate the taste favorably, this was often the only positive thing people mentioned.

Many said it was greatly overpriced and that they would not purchase this again.
