Mara Betsch, the associate nutrition editor at, shares the low-down on energy bars. Pre-packaged energy bars can be super convenient, but some are loaded with sugar or other ingredients you may not want to be eating.

Always read the ingredient list when buying protein bars, and avoid those that have lots of sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Your energy bar should contain natural ingredients that you recognize and at least three grams of protein.
