Five Fingers Point to Nutrition

A History of Nutrition in Images

This image comes from a 1954 educational film titled "Eat for Health." This short movie was produced by Encyclopedia Britannica Film with the help of the American Medical Association's Council on Foods and Nutrition. Although the five food groups represented here were never part of the USDA's nutritional guidelines, we see the tendency to simplify the food groups, something the guidelines would soon reflect.

Here are the five groups:

  1. Fruit
  2. Vegetables
  3. Meat and Eggs
  4. Milk and Cheese
  5. Bread and Butter
