Best Cereal Brands

2012 Food Awards

We're sure you've heard at least once in your life that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But since you don’t always have time to whip something up, cereal makes a great option. When you need something quick and easy, cereal is usually the go to, but so many of them can be no better than candy. With breakfast being so important, you might as well get the best cereal out there that you can. And we found it!

Nutrition Criteria

1/2 cup serving: < 130 Calories, zero trans fat, no more than 35% of fat from calories, < 1 g saturated fat (or 15% of total calories), > 2g of fiber, < 480 mg of sodium, no more than 35% added sugars by weight, and at least 10% of the daily value for one or more: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron, Calcium.

Contenders

  1. Post Shredded Wheat - Wheat N’ Bran: Although it’s not a bad choice with its zero sugars, it still didn’t make the cut due to the higher calories compared to our winner.

  2. Mom’s Best Natural Toasted Wheat Fulls: This had the same problem as the Wheat N’ Brans did, with calories a tad higher and fiber lower than our criteria.

  3. Bear River Valley Toasted Tumble Wheat: Another cereal that had almost the exact same facts as Mom’s Best Naturals, therefore it also didn't make the final cut.

  4. Fiber One Original: This was a perfect runner-up. It had a great amount of vitamins, very high fiber and was low in calories. The reason it ended up not being the winner was because 16% fat from the calories vs. the winner’s .07%.
